Toyota teases hot GR Yaris Prototype with rally heritage

The image shows the rear of the machine, with styling that’s familiar from the existing Yaris, but with the addition of far wider rear wheel arches to fit the car’s likely high performance brief. In a further nod to the car’s likely performance intent it sports the camouflage livery used by most recent hot Toyota models of recent years, including the recently revived Supra. At the launch of the revamped Yaris recently, Toyota’s executive vice-president, Matt Harrison, told Autocar that a performance version of the model would likely be launched to strengthen the link between Toyota’s road cars and its Gazoo Racing motorsport arm. Toyota has applied various levels of branding under the Gazoo Racing theme in order to develop a model structure for its high-performance models. These include the hardcore limited-run GRMN versions that are positioned above models that carry the GR badge, which represents an ‘authentic sports model’. The firm also offers a GR Sport trim level that offers a more aggressive look while retaining an unchanged mechanical package. Toyota secured the 2018 World Rally Championship manufacturers’ title with the Yaris WRC, with Ott Tanak claiming this year’s driver’s

Hyundai teases more awesome cars for SEMA

Hyundai is starting to pick up a reputation for bringing concepts to SEMA which don’t take themselves too seriously, and this year theyve brought a couple vehicles that put fun above all else. The VelosterRaptor N was created in partnership with Bisimoto Engineering, a renowned tuning firm famous for turning the boost up on various vehicles, and this project is no different. Thanks to upgraded turbocharger internals, a high-performance intercooler, a high-flow intake, a water-methanol kit, optimized ECU, mass airflow modifications and a sports exhaust, the VelosterRaptor N makes over 320 horsepower.Apparently, the parts installed are customer-friendly and easy to install, which means this Type R Killer is a vehicle you could potentially build in your own garage.Hyundai is also bringing a tricked-out Kona to the show, built by Rockstar Performance Garage. To fit the King suspension, the Kona had to be extensively modified; 16-inch Motegi wheels with 30-inch Mickey Thompson tires have been fitted. The body has been coated in Bulletliner, and up front theres a small bumper bar with fog lights.Apart from the aesthetic upgrades, a Magnaflow exhaust and a billet intake from KN were installed, along with a Race Chip tune and high-performance brakes.Although theyre just renders for now, the real vehicles will be on display at SEMA in Las

Toyota teases retro-inspired custom Supra 3000GT for SEMA

Toyotas concept car reveal scheduled for SEMA 2019 is a coupe that pays tribute to the A80 Supra 3000GT concept of the 1990s.Starting with a 2020 GT Supra, TRD (Toyota Racing Development) takes the already-wild-looking vehicle and adds a few more touches to make it the Supra most of us think about when the name is uttered. The hood has those four familiar cutouts, while the big wing makes a return to the rear. Wide fender flares round out the body, as well as the changes.Toyota released an almost-six-minute video detailing what made the original 3000GT of 1994 stand out, and we can see the automaker wants the 2020 Supra to stand out in the same way as a real racing machine. Stylized flashes of the vehicle in production show a lot of the details, including mapping out the awesome hood grilles and the rear spoiler. As for the engine, we can assume TRD wont leave that alone. The straight-six makes 335 horsepower from three turbocharged litres, and we know theres room for more, as the same engine makes 382 horsepower between the fenders of its German cousin. Well have to wait until the vehicle is unveiled for true figures, though. In Japan, upgrade parts like the ones that will be fit to the 3000GT are already available. We hope that with the unveiling of the concept at the aftermarket showcase show, wide-body kits and wings will be available for North Americans to buy straight from the

Hyundai teases silly off-road Veloster concept for SEMA

SEMA is typically the place where all the most ridiculous custom vehicles gather to make us gag, but in recent years its actually been a hotbed for manufacturers who want to bring out some factory-built custom cars. And this year Hyundai is bringing a real doozy. Its called the Grappler, aptly named after its chunky tires and off-road looks. Its Hyundais idea of a pre-runner Veloster, and we love it.More than just a set of tires and a lift, the Grappler has seen the front bumper ditched in favour of a skid plate and fog lights. On the roof is a classic tubular roof rack with a spare tire and an LED light bar; according to Hyundai the rack is also the base for a solar panel. This is clearly just an artists rendering of the final product (and a poorly one done, at that) but we fully expect Hyundai to bring this car to SEMA. A few years ago, Hyundai also brought a few customized vehicles to the show, including a jacked-up Santa Fe complete with Rockstar energy drink stickers and digital camo.Hyundai wont likely bring the vehicle to production, but that wont stop us from wanting one. Luckily, it wouldnt be too hard to take the bumper off and add a roof rack to a Veloster to make our own; wed love to see a bunch of these out on the trail embarrassing bros in their massive

Aston Martin teases us again, this time with the DBX’s soundtrack

My God, you know this whole tease-you-new-hot-rod has reached new levels of silliness when you put out a press missive detailing a Youtube video consisting of nothing more than the revving of an engine. I love the sound of pistons compressing more than most, but surely there are better uses for Amazon server space than 30 seconds of frenetic internal combustion. That said, I have to admit that, despite the long, drawn-out nature of Aston Martins news-making foreplay, I am intrigued by the companys new DBX. For the companys first SUV, the good folks from Gaydon are making some outlandish claims for the so-far-disguised as in camouflaged photos sport brute. For instance, in no particular order, they are saying that DBX can corner as hard as its seriously-fast Vantage, brake harder than the companys DBS Superleggera and that its engine the Mercedes-sourced, Aston-tuned twin-turbo 4.0-litre V8, pumps out 550 PS (about 542 SAE horsepower), more than any of its V8-powered coupes and roadsters. If true and, my Lord, they did release a Youtube sound video as proof the DBX may be just the Urus-chasing SUV Aston needs to keep up with rapidly-growing Lamborghini sales.Officially, though this is still the reveal of the DBXs exhaust system, which, in official parlance, has been tuned to reflect a deep bass with increasing mid-tones, creating true auditory exhilaration. I will leave it your fine ears as to whether Aston has indeed created the broader, more solid acoustic note they were

Aston Martin teases new DBX SUV with video of grille

Aston Martin 5th / 6th November 2018 Photo: Drew Gibson Aston Martin is venturing into a brave new world with a brand-new vehicle, the DBX. It will be the first SUV the marque has ever built, and were finally getting a real glimpse of what it will look like when completed. The video shared by the brand to YouTube starts off with images of the DB11, a delicious two-door with a silver roof panel, but then changes to a silhouette of the DBX, underscoring the relationship between the two vehicles.Obviously, the second you see the grille it is instantly recognizable as an Aston Martin. The DBX looks to heavily borrow from the styling of the DB11 which is a good thing, because that is one gorgeous automobile. The teaser shows almost nothing else, and Aston Martin is keeping pretty mum on details of the DBX. This is brand-new territory for Aston, and were sure it will want to get it absolutely perfect before showing it off. Making it beautiful is a good start; making it drive well will be another.Speaking of, Aston has been testing the vehicle in harsh, off-road environments all over the world, although its unlikely most people who buy the SUV will use it that way.Being a real SUV, however, means it will have to be able to handle any type of weather system, and also offer a modicum of capability in terms of things like towing and payload ability, so hopefully Aston can deliver on those expectations. The DBX will be unveiled some time in December 2019, when all questions will be

Dodge teases Widebody version of 2020 Charger

The next time some hackneyed old Boomer drones on about the good old days of cars and horsepower, please point them to this news article.Dodge, master of the tease, dropped a new video today that alludes to the impending introduction of a Charger Widebody variant. While this isn’t the first time such a machine has been speculated about on these digital pages, it is the first time we have official video from the manufacturer. The quick clips starts off in typical teaser fashion, with the thin veneer of a silk sheet covering the body of what is clearly a Dodge Charger. Its grille-mounted SRT badge is familiar, but those wheel arches portend something much more delicious.Alert readers will recall Dodge showed off a Charger Widebody Concept earlier this year at a SpringFest fan expo. Clad in all manner of camo, the brands head of performance said it was just a prototype. Yep, mmhmm. And the Raptors victory celebration was just a small party.Predictably, the video cuts off before we get a chance to see any of the good stuff, not unlike when someone picked up the phone during the days of dial-up just as the good pictures were about to load onto the screen. Theres every chance in the world well see multiple Widebody variations once production starts, ranging from Scat Pack to Redeye. What? Redeye? Yes, gossip is rife that its not only the body that will be puffed up like a kid on a field trip who got stung by a bee and forgot his EpiPen. Rumours are flying that this, or potentially another variant, will be packing Redeye power under its bulging bonnet. That means we are about to live in a world where one can waltz into a showroom and buy a 797-horsepower sedan with factory warranty.Trust us folks, these are the good old days. We should know more about this beast on

Ford teases new, possibly Le Mans-inspired GT, to be unveiled Fourth of July

A teaser image of a new Ford GT trimFord Ford teased an image of a new GT supercar trim on June 21, revealing scant details save for the models release, to take place at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in the U.K. on the Fourth of July. From what we can see in the teaser photo, though, this special Ford GT will have, at minimum, a massive Le Mans-style rear wing and a roof scoop, suggesting the new car will wear some Le Mans-inspired kit.Functioning headlights seem to confirm the thing will be street-legal, thoughtalked about mixed messages. Our best bet may be a race-trim track-special.The Ford factory GT Le Mans program just wrapped this year with the 24 Hours of Le Mans the feather in its cap, but the Canadian manufacturer of the GT, Multimatic, tweeted You thought you had seen it all? Fisker teases new photo of its ‘affordable’ all-electric SUV

Electric car company Fisker has teased a new photo of its upcoming battery-powered SUV, which it says will unveil this coming December, and which will cost US$40,000 when it goes on sale. Company founder and CEO Henrik Fisker didn’t go the traditional route of leaking the photo to the press; instead, he posted it on his Facebook page. The focus was on the D-pillar – where a recessed LED turn signal alongside the conventional rear-mounted signals “will provide extra safety when you change lanes,” he said – and on the wide, sculptured rear fender. The picture also shows a sunroof over the rear of the cabin, and pop-out door handles with LED strips in them. Two hours prior, Fisker posted that the company is “moving fast” on the electric SUV prototype, and that he’s in the final stages of selecting a plant to manufacture it. The Fisker SUV is targeting the upcoming Tesla Model Y, which is expected to go into production in late 2020. Tesla plans to sell the top-line versions first, advertising US$66,290 for a long-range model with rear-wheel drive. In all-wheel-drive trim, the long-range is $72,290, and the performance model is $84,290. A standard-range model, expected to cost around US$48,000, will go on sale in 2021. Fisker earlier said its electric sport-ute will have two electric motors, one for each axle, to provide all-wheel drive; and a range of 482 kilometres with an 80-kWh lithium-ion battery. It’s expected to go into production late in 2021. Fisker says it will be the first of three “affordable” electric vehicles the company is planning to produce. In January 2018, it showed off its EMotion flagship luxury car, which it said will use solid-state batteries, have a range of 640 kilometres, offer Level 4 autonomous driving features and retail for around

Mini teases electric Cooper SE by using it to—pull a cargo plane!?

The Cooper SE electric prototype might be Mini by nature, but it’s still got big power. Mini made a show of its new electric hatchback’s towing power, hoping to change the perception of small EVs as gutless, by using it to pull a Boeing 777F cargo plane down the runway at Frankfurt airport. The Lufthansa plane weighs approximately 136 tonnes, but the hot hatch’s instant electric torque has it rolling steadily in short order. The BMW Group put together a video of the stunt introducing the “muscle car,” showing it in a yellow-and-black camo wrap pulling the massive aircraft a short distance before being loaded into the plane’s cargo area. “Having been the epitome of thrilling mobility in the urban environment for 60 years, the MINI brand will in future combine locally emissions-free driving in city traffic with a unique emotional experience,” the brand wrote in a press release. “In this way, the MINI Electric will be a driving force for future drive technology. Helping the MINI Cooper SE perform its muscle car role, the performance characteristics of the electric motor combine spontaneous power delivery with a high level of torque available directly from standing.” It’s anticipated that Mini will borrow the BMW i3’s electric powertrain for the build. That makes 70 horsepower and 184 lb-ft. of torque in the BMW, using a 33-kWh battery with a range of around 160 km. The plane-pull stunt is the first of a series of videos amping up the car before it debuts in July, goes into production at the British plant in Oxford in November and lands in North American driveways by the end of the year.
