Tesla Chief Executive Officer Elon Musk said deposits taken on its Cybertruck have climbed to 200,000 even after two windows unexpectedly shattered in Thursdays big reveal.The electric-car maker has a history of unveiling future products to throngs of excited customers, taking deposits, and then delivering years later.Two years ago, Tesla showed off a Semi truck and a next-generation Roadster sports car, but neither vehicle is in production yet. A ‘smashing’ success? All the best reactions to Tesla’s provocative Cybertruck

It was a strange and yet somehow familiar scene.Awkward Elon standing in front of his followers, random bros shouting out during the pauses, a child’s geometry project on wheels in the spotlight. And then the windows broke—The unveiling of the Tesla Cybertruck might have been the oddest Tesla reveal event yet. Fitting, perhaps, because it’s definitely the brand’s oddest-looking vehicle. The best/worst moment in the evening happened when lead designer Franz von Holzhausen, warm from just having sledgehammered the doors to show off their strength, lobbed a metal ball at the driver-side window. Unlike the door, which didn’t bear so much as a scratch, the window broke. Oh my fing god, laughed Elon. Then Franz busted the back window the same way. B.C.s government-run insurance body says the sort of driverless operation made possible by Teslas new Smart Summon feature is prohibited in the province, and that collisions involving Smart Summon may not be covered.Local outlet Richmond Newsthis past week shared a reader’s video showing a Tesla Model 3 being controlled via the Smart Summon app attempting to drive into a Richmond, B.C. parking lot in the oncoming lane.Had that car crashed, the ICBC told the newspaper, the owners insurance may not have provided coverage.Currently, B.C. laws do not permit driverless vehicles on our roads, ICBC said in a statement. A vehicle being driven autonomously in a shopping mall parking lot, for example, is not allowed. The driver is responsible for the operation of the vehicle including when driver assistance is activated.The videos were taken at a parking complex in Richmond, B.C., and show a white Tesla Model 3 with no driver at the wheel, driving to meet up with its owner, who was controlling the cars progress via the Smart Summon app a few hundred feet away.As the vehicle enters the parking lot it crosses the yellow center line, perhaps to avoid the person walking across the crosswalk. There are fewer painted lines on the pavement in shopping mall areas, so its possible the Teslas software was confused about its whereabouts.The video shows the car hesitating, and in the second video, a diesel VW Jettas driving past it seems to further confound the tech. The woman who shot the video says a security guard came running out of the mall to chase the vehicle before it was stopped, when a man thought to be a friend of the owners appeared. The Smart Summon feature was only rolled out in Canada a few weeks ago, and Transport Canada has yet to outline any specific standards governing its use. Death in fiery wreck blamed on Tesla’s hideaway door handles

Teslas retractable door handles are being blamed for the death of a man in Florida, who was consumed by a fire in his car when a police officer responding to the incident couldnt get the door open, Automotive News reports.According to the wrongful death lawsuit, 48-year-old anesthesiologist Omar Awan lost control of his leased Tesla in February on a south Florida parkway.The vehicle slammed into a palm tree and burst into flames.When officers arrived, the door handles were retracted, and all they and bystanders could do was watch the car fill with smoke. The cause of death was listed as smoke inhalation; Awan sustained no injuries from the crash.The fire allegedly originated from the batteries, which in a Tesla are below the floor.Fire engulfed the car and burned Dr. Awan beyond recognition all because the Model S has inaccessible door handles, no other way to open the doors, and an unreasonably dangerous fire risk, according to the suit.The handles are supposed to extend when it senses the key fob in the drivers hands, but it doesnt always go so smoothly. In fact, the door handles are one of items most commonly listed as faulty by Tesla Model S owners, according to Consumer Reports.The design of the door handles has been contentious since its inception. Tesla Model 3 Starting September 2020, electric vehicles sold in the U.S. will be required to make an artificial noise while traveling under 30 km/h, for the safety of pedestrians who may otherwise not hear the near-silent vehicles.While most car companies will probably fit their EVs with some kind of whirring or fake engine noise, its well-noted Tesla CEO Elon Musk thinks normal is just a setting on a washing machine.That explains why Musk said in a Tweet that Tesla vehicles will be able to make much more fun noises, like coconuts being used to imitate horse clip-clops; goat bleats; and, er farts.💨 🐐 sounds too (also, of course) Elon Musk (@elonmusk) October 6, 2019The coconuts mention is a reference Monty Python and the Quest for the Holy Grail; in the dry British comedy, King Arthurs servant clicks two coconut half-shells together in lieu of Arthur riding a real horse. Motor Mouth: Will Porsche’s Taycan challenge Tesla’s EV hegemony?

It just debuted two days ago, but Porsche has already taken some 30,000 deposits for its new Taycan. Not exactly Tesla numbers, but impressive nonetheless. Closer to home, more than 1,000 Canadians have plunked down $2,500 hoping to secure one of the first electrified Porsche four-doors to hit the street. Again, neither number rivals the multitudes that offered up deposits on Teslas Model 3, but Taycan does play in an entirely different snack bracket.A more appropriate context, then, might be to note that said deposits are roughly equal to the number of 911s that Porsche Canada sells in its best of years. In other words, September 4s worldwide launch of the Taycan was a very good day at the office for Porsche Canadas president and CEO, Marc Ouayoun.Now, never mind that a few of those chomping at the bit may well be put off by the Taycans price the base Turbo starts at $173,900 and the Turbo S is a wallet-stretching $213,900. If that means Porsche has finally brought profitability to the electric vehicle segment, so much the better.More important is that the company is depending on the Taycan to be successful, Detlev von Platen, Porsches executive board member for sales and marketing, telling the launch event attendees the company will be investing over US$6 billion in battery power over the next few years and expects more than 50 per cent of the companys cars to be electrified within the next decade. In other words, Porsche needs the Taycan to be successful.And more important than that is that the automotive industry needs the Taycan to be successful. So far, the electric vehicle segment has been all Tesla, the Silicon Valley upstart the only truly successful purveyor of battery power. Yes, I know Nissans Leaf remains the best-selling EV of all time, but, while semi-plentiful, its actually selling well below barely 10 per cent of initial projections what was predicted when it was introduced ten years ago.What the Tesla faithful don’t realize is their devotion is counter-productive to the propagation of EVsTesla, meanwhile, has become the poster child for planet-friendly motoring, Elon Musks decision whether it was brilliant insight or bulls%^t luck really doesnt matter to focus on the luxury segment proving to be providential. Whither goes Tesla, it now seems, goes the entire electric vehicle industry.The problem is that Mr. Musks influence and the cult-like devotion it has engendered is not good for anyone except Tesla shareholders.Whether youre a fan of long-range plug-ins or prefer fuel cells, it is not so much that Tesla is winning, but that Mr. Musk so dominates the conversation surrounding EVs that it stifles discussion into what a truly multi-platform zero-emissions future might look like.Now, to be certain, the company and man for they are one and the same deserve all the accolades they have received for a) creating the luxury EV segment where none existed and b) legitimizing the concept of the battery-powered car in the eyes of a formerly skeptical audience. For that, Mr. Musk will undoubtedly be lauded in history books as the founder of a movement.Um @Porsche, this word Turbo does not mean what you think it does Elon Musk (@elonmusk) September 5, 2019The problem is that said worship has gone too far, creating disciples for whom any dissent, any mention of competitive brands is seen as traitorous. In my 35 years in this biz, I have see nothing not the Ford-versus-Chevy wars, not Jeep Wrangler aficionados, not even one-per-centers devoted to their Hogs to match the cult-like allegiance Tesla enjoys amongst its minions.Unfortunately, that deference is stifling competition. Despite the deception that traditional automakers are dragging their heels on electrification, nothing could be further from the truth. The problem they all face is that, any time they introduce a (costly-to-develop) EV, they are met with the mildest of mehs.Initially, they were decried as too ugly (Chevys Bolt), too slow (the Kia Soul) or lacking in panache (pretty much everyone). But, then Jaguar came out with the I-Pace, offering both pedigree and panache. Yet they too were greeted with another giant yawn. Too slow, said the disciples, ignoring the fact theres more to a sporty automobile than Ludicrous acceleration. So I-Pace sales have crashed. Audis e-tron? Better, but hardly all-conquering, especially considering that the Model X with which it competes is the weakest model in Teslas lineup.And thats why the Taycan is so important. It meets every single objection even the most devoted of Teslarati could dream up. Brand image? None is stronger than Porsches. Build quality? Ditto. Beauty? The Taycan is the four-door 911 that Porsche always promised the Panamera would be. Ludicrously fast? My Lord, yes. Toss in handling that is all but a match for the best of supercars and you have a car that is markedly superior to the Tesla Model S it ostensibly competes with.Oh, the haters will no doubt point to its price

A software developer has taken a pretty drastic step in order to ensure she never loses her Tesla Model 3 keys again. She’s had the RFID tag surgically implanted beneath the skin of her forearm. Actually, it’s less about being forgetful and more about being curious for Amie DD, a software developer, YouTuber, cosplay enthusiast and owner of many tattoos, who recently dissolved a Tesla valet card to get the chip out, encapsulated it and then had it inserted into her arm by a professional body modifier. She would’ve liked to just upload the tag’s information into the other microchip that already lives in the flesh of her hand and unlocks her home, but Tesla’s security measures prevented the transfer of data. Wondering what the procedure of inserting a Lego-man sized object into a human arm looks like? You’re in luck because Amie made a video of that experience, too. Beware! There will be blood. The only thing Amie hasn’t shared is the chip actually opening or starting her car. Lawsuit claims older Tesla’s battery capacities are being artificially lowered

You wouldnt know by looking at it, but this Tesla Model S P80D can drive itself A lawsuit recently filed by the owner of a Tesla Model S alleges the California EV manufacturer is artificially limiting the capacity of older Tesla models so it would avoid having to replace defective batteries, Reuters reports.Under the guise of safety and increasing the longevity of the batteries of the Class Vehicles, Tesla fraudulently manipulated its software with the intent to avoid its duties and legal obligations to customers to fix, repair, or replace the batteries of the Class Vehicles, all of which Tesla knew were defective, yet failed to inform its customers of the defects, the lawsuit alleges.It goes on to say that potentially thousands of owners of older Tesla models have had their battery driving ranges lowered by as many as 64 kilometres following a recent over-the-air software update. Plaintiff David Rasmussens 2014 Model S 85 says his battery capacity fell by about 8 kWh, but that he was told by Tesla the degradation was normal. Other owners have said their cars no longer charge to 100 per cent.The automakers defense notes the software update was made after a Model S caught fire in Hong Kong; the incident prompted Tesla to revise its charging and thermal management settings to help further protect the battery and improve battery longevity. Teslas may stream Netflix, YouTube when not moving

The new Model S can go 240 miles per charge and from zero to 60 in 5.2 seconds.
