Ontario classic car collection auction full of trucks and Studebakers

A 1937 Studebaker Coupe Express from the Rier Collection.Supplied / Sheldon Rier A Cambridge, Ontario-based collection of classic cars and trucks is being trimmed down via a massive auction July 6 numbering some 150 lots, most of them of rare cars, trucks and motorcycles dating back to 1927.Sheldon Rier and his father John have been acquiring obscure classic cars for many years, with one of their focuses on Studebaker models and trucks.Dad had a 1936 Studebaker back in the mid-70s, and all these years later we have this flock of them, says the younger Rier about the collection. The sheer size of it is getting to be a lot for the pair to store and maintain, so the plan is to shed the bulk of the cars via this sale. Its a pretty big change for us but its a good time for others to be caretakers of some of these cars that we have had so much fun with, Sheldon Rier said. Highlights from the sale include a concours-shown 1937 Studebaker Dictator Business Coupe; a 1927 Ford Model T pickup; a 1932 Auburn Brougham; a 1941 Willys pickup; and dozens of cars and trucks in project condition.Aside from the classic cars up for sale, the auction will see some of the Riers motorcycles, automobilia, and old literature, brochure and parts trade hands, too.The auction preview is July 5, with the actual auction going down the next day; bidding can be done in person, online or by

Transport Canada investigating 250,000 GM trucks, SUVs over braking issue

2017 Chevrolet SilveradoChevrolet Transport Canada opened a probe June into 249,700 General Motors trucks and SUVs over whether the vehicles power brake systems could deteriorate prematurely, causing issues for owners and leading to incident or injury. The safety regulator is specifically looking at GMC Yukon, Cadillac Escalade and Chevrolet Suburban and Tahoe SUVs from model years 2015 through 2017; as well as light-duty Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra trucks from model years 2014 through 2017.The move follows the opening of an investigation last November by the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) over the same issue. The NHTSA had received 487 reports from drivers of some GM trucks and SUVS alleging their vehicles required hard brake pedal effort to stop adequately, and that stopping distances were extended anyway. This was attributed to a deterioration of the engine-driven brake assist vacuum pump, reports Reuters. That group counted nine incidents of collisions related to poor braking; and two injuries among those reports, and launched its own probe into about 2.73 million SUVs and pickups from model years 2014 through

Ram recalls 6,886 trucks in Canada over driveshafts that could fail

2019 Ram 1500Handout / Ram Ram is recalling close to 7,000 pickups in Canada because their rear driveshafts could detach thanks to a bad weld. Some 6,886 model year 2018 and 2019 Ram 1500 44 trucks are affected, the automaker said. In affected vehicles, a weld in the rear drivehsaft could crack and fail, and the shaft could separate from the pickup. If the truck is in rear-wheel-drive mode when this happens, it could cause an immediate lack of propulsion. Additionally, the broken-off shaft could pose a hazard to other drivers or people nearby. Owners may notice a weird vibration or hear noises prior to the weld separating, though FCA notes only about one per cent of the recalled vehicles are likely actually affected. The automaker came across the issue last summer when it noticed a higher-than-expected number of warranty claims coming in for cracked driveshafts. Affected owners will be notified via mail, and will have their driveshaft replaced for

GM recalls more than 40,000 trucks in Canada for engine fire risk

2017 Chevrolet Silverado HDHandout General Motors is recalling over 368,000 pickups and other trucks worldwide, including more than 40,000 in Canada, after 19 reports of fires caused by engine block heater cords. The recall covers certain 2019 Chevrolet Silverado 4500, 5500 and 6500 trucks, as well as the 2017 through 2019 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 and 3500 and GMC Sierra 2500 and 3500. All have GM’s 6.6-litre diesel engines and an optional engine block heater used to keep the block warm in extremely cold temperatures. GM is asking customers not to use engine block heaters until further notice. The company said early May the electric heater cord or the terminals connecting the cord to the heater could short-circuit and fail. That can cause fires. No injuries have been reported. GM is still trying to find the cause of the problem and develop a fix. The company began investigating the problem in December and found that a fire can occur if a block-heater coolant leak develops and the coolant comes in contact with the cable terminals, or if the cable itself is damaged. About 324,000 U.S. trucks are covered by the recall, and about 40,319 in Canada. GM began notifying dealers on April 26 and told them to stop selling the trucks until repairs are made. No date has been set yet to notify

This tuner is building 100 new GMC ‘Syclone’ trucks with 455 hp

The 2019 GMC Syclone by Specialty Vehicle EngineeringSVE A New Jersey-based tuner is bringing back one of the most hallowed names in sport truck history, Syclone, and fixing them to 100 new GMC Canyons each boasting a healthy 455 horsepower. Specialty Vehicle Engineering may be better known for its modern Yenko/SC Chevrolet Camaros, but it apparently wants to continue building its reputation on nostalgia with these new 2019 GMC Syclones. Based on a extended-car midsize Canyon, reports CNET, the trucks come in either 2WD or 4WD, and trade the stock 308-horsepower six for a supercharged 3.6-litre unit that now churns out 455 horsepower, which we’d call more than adequate. The exhaust note growls out of a new set of pipes, and the pickup’s been lowered, too, by two inches in front and five out back, for handling less akin to a work vehicle and more akin to a performance car. Front brakes have been upgraded with six-piston discs, and the suspension’s been tricked out with new sway bars, traction bars and shocks, too. The 2019 GMC Syclone by Specialty Vehicle Engineering SVE To let people know what you’re running, there’s Syclone badging on the doors and tailgate; a power bulge on the hood; rocker panel extensions; and colour-keyed grille and bumper pieces. Four 20-inch wheels round out the look, along with a set of custom-trimmed seats. While the Sonoma-based Syclone of 1991 was famous for being made available only in black – well, and for being able to pull off zero-to-100 km/h sprints under 5.0 seconds, which is good for a truck even today – the 2019 resurrection comes in any stock Canyon colour you would ask for. Though, really, you’re going to want it in black, let’s be honest. SVE will be making the 2019 GMC Syclone available through U.S. GMC dealerships, though you might not like the price. The firm is charging US$39,995 for the conversion, which means when you include the price of the donor truck, you’re looking at at least US$70,000 or so. GMC built 2,995 Syclones back in ’91, but Specialty Vehicle Engineering is limiting its production run to just
