Lexus unveils its first all-electric vehicle — but Canada won’t get it

Well, we lose out again. After many years of selling hybrids, Lexus has finally gone all-electric with the upcoming UX 300e. The compact crossover is the brands first to run exclusively on battery power. But rather than unveiling it at the Los Angeles Auto Show, where we saw the Mustang Mach-E, Chevrolet EV pickup, and Tesla Cybertruck break cover, Lexus chose a show in Guangzhou, China.Thats because the UX 300e is only planned for China, Europe and Japan. Lexus Canada confirmed it won’t be sold in North America. (Lexus sells hybrids in Canada, as does Toyota, but neither has had an all-electric vehicle up until now.)And we cant figure how a nimble little luxury sport-ute, perfectly sized for the city and with no tailpipe out the back, wouldnt be a slam-dunk on our shores. Instead, Lexus Electrified, the companys global electrification strategy, will start with the UX 300e overseas next year. But that said, a closer look reveals a model that isn’t about performance. Lexus even says it will have natural-yet-brisk acceleration character, which doesnt exactly translate into pushes you into the back seat. Its 54.3-kWh battery puts it below other premium brands: Audis e-tron is 95 kWh and Mercedes-Benzs ECQ is 85 kWh. Even the Chevrolet Bolt and Nissan Leaf Plus have bigger batteries. The UX 300e makes 221 lb.-ft. of torque below the Leaf Plus 250 lb.-ft., or the 266 laid down by the Bolt. Audi and Mercedes-Benz scream by it at 413 and 560 lb.-ft. respectively. When its time to top up, the UX 300e has a fast-charge capacity of just 50 kW, while the e-tron rates as high as 150 kW.All of that might be understandable if the UX 300e went forever on a charge, but that doesnt seem to be the case either. Lexus claims 400 kilometres but thats on NEDC (New European Driving Cycle), an outdated method that can be more than 25 per cent more generous than how electric vehicles are rated here.Doing the math and assuming the UX 300e nets 300 km in Canadas tests, were still looking at 363 km for the Leaf Plus, and more than 400 for the Bolt. For the higher performers here, the e-trons estimated at 328 km, and the EQC at 360 km.Of course, we have to account for the largest factor in all of this North Americans. Specifically, our neighbours to the south, who usually eschew pint-sized in favour of portly when it comes to vehicles, and who buy enough automobiles to dictate our market. The UX 300e is probably the right size and the right power for its target markets overseas. Were guessing the next Lexus Electrified will probably be an RX, with a bigger battery and more power for

Tesla unveils otherworldly Cybertruck, starting at US$39,900

The Tesla Cybertruck has arrived and it is, as promised, very, uh, different than the other pickups currently on the market. The brand’s mildly enigmatic CEO Elon Musk introduced the highly enigmatic battery-powered truck at an event in Los Angeles on Thursday evening streamed live online. He was accompanied on-stage by a merry band of softcore Mad-Max-types dressed all in black, on hand to demonstrate (rather ineffectively at times) the truck’s toughness. The biggest news is the sheer audacity of this thing’s design, which, in fairness, Tesla did warn us about, in the form of nods to Blade Runner and a certain underwater James Bond car and straight disclaimers it would alienate many.  Still, it — it looks like a six-year-old’s interpretation of a future truck. We honestly thought it was a joke when it first drove on stage. Also: pedestrian safety regulations are still a thing, right? The Cybertruck measures in at smaller than a Ford F-150; comes standard with adaptive air suspension; and allegedly starts at US$39,900 before any EV rebates. It will be available in three range options, measured here in miles: 250+, 300+ or 500+. The electric engine will ship the new-age pickup from zero to 60 mph (96 km/h) in a blistering 2.9 seconds in top trim, and provide enough torque to tow 14,000 lbs. This was showcased in a video of the Cybertruck literally running away with an F-150 in a tug-of-war. “You want a truck that’s really tough, not fake tough?” quipped Musk. A sledgehammer-wielding assistant showcased the toughness of the truck’s stainless steel alloy (the same material used on Tesla’s Starship rocket) by whacking away at a regular truck door, followed by the Cybertruck’s. They also shot the vehicles with a 9mm pistol. You can guess the results. But when it came time to demonstrate the durability of the transparent metal glass, the thrown object that was meant to bounce off the passenger window ended up shattering it. And the rear door window, too. Musk soldiered on through the reveal with the two shattered windows. In related truck news, GM vied for its piece of the electric pickup truck buzz on Tesla’s big day by revealing its e-truck release-date just hours before Elon went live. GM’s electric pickup will be on sale sometime in late 2021, roughly the same time Tesla estimates its truck will make its first deliveries. However, you can make a US$100 deposit on Tesla’s Cybertruck right now at Tesla.com.LISTEN: What do car dealers think about electric vehicles? Are they keen to have them in their showrooms? Toyota unveils Copen GR Sport as hot compact convertible

Toyota has revealed a hot GR Sport version of subsidiary company Daihatsu’s Copen convertible. The compact two-seater, built to Japan’s ‘kei car’ specifications, receives a number of styling and chassis upgrades to create an entry point into Toyota’s growing range of performance models.  Toyota’s modifications are primarily handling-focused, with the addition of a front brace and reshaped centre brace enhancing body rigidity. Suspension modifications, including a retuned spring rate and bespoke shock absorbers, are claimed to achieve a balance between smoothness and grip.  The Copen’s electric power steering system has been tuned for enhanced dynamics, and is claimed to improve turn-in response and make it easier to use the car’s full performance in all environments.  Design tweaks include the addition of a more aggressively styled front bumper, a grille design inspired by other Toyota GR models and new sports-style BBS forged aluminium wheels.  Inside, the Daihatu’s seats are replaced with performance-oriented Recaro items, while the speedometer and rev counter are redesigned to reinforce the car’s sporting ambitions. There are eight colour options for the exterior, but the Copen GR Sports’ interior can only be specified in black.  The Copen’s 660cc turbocharged three-cylinder engine is retained, sending power to the front wheels through a five-speed manual or seven-speed CVT gearbox.  The model is currently unavailable outside Japan, with domestic prices starting from 2,380,000 yen, equivalent to roughly

Toyota unveils new Mirai Concept fuel cell vehicle

Toyota has revealed a dramatic new Mirai Concept, which previews the second-generation version of its hydrogen fuel cell vehicle, ahead of this year’s Tokyo motor show. The new hydrogen-powered machine is described as “a final-stage development model of the second-generation Mirai” and Toyota promises a major step forward in fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV) technology. It claims the new model offers a 30% increase in driving range over the current model, which has a range of just over 300 miles, along with improved driving performance. The new Mirai Concept is built on Toyota’s latest TNGA platform and features dramatic new styling, including a revamped front with a bold grille and a sweeping, coupé-esque rear. Toyota claims increased body rigidity and a lower centre of gravity than the original Mirai. The concept measures 4935mm long and 1885mm wide, with a wheelbase of 2920mm. It sits on 20in wheels and retains the four-door saloon layout of the original Mirai, which was launched in 2014. The interior has also been reworked. It features a 12.3in central touchscreen and a digital instrument display, with many of the controls moved to the centre of the dashboard. Notably, the Mirai now has five seats instead of the original’s four, which, Toyota says, has been enabled by a reworking of the hydrogen fuel cell configuration. Aside from the claimed increase in range, Toyota has not given specific details of development work done on the fuel cell powertrain. But it says the system, including the fuel cell stack, has been entirely redesigned and offers increased hydrogen storage. It also claims the work on the system ensures a smoother, linear response, along with improved

Ricardo unveils military-spec Ford Ranger pick-up

British engineering firm Ricardo has unveiled a military-spec version of the Ford Ranger pick-up, developed in collaboration with specialist vehicle manufacturer Polaris.   Ricardo, which specialises in developing engines and transmissions but has also developed the Land Rover Wolf and Foxhound armoured personnel carriers, has equipped the Ranger with a range of features aimed at improving safety, fuel economy and durability.  The most obvious visual difference over the standard model is the addition of an optional external roll cage, which, as with the firm’s military Land Rover, incorporates a circular cut-out at the rear for the mounting of firearms.  Underneath, the Ranger gains an armoured ballistic underfloor, rock sliders and improved waterproofing, while armoured glass and strengthened front and rear bumpers further improve safety in the event of an impact or explosion.  Modifications inside include the addition of four-point harnesses for all the seats, while upgrades have been made to the truck’s 24V electrical system to better cope with the demands of military use. The model is powered by Ford’s twin-turbo 2.0-litre diesel engine, paired with a 10-speed automatic gearbox that’s said to enhance fuel economy. Optional suspension, brake system and tyre upgrades are offered as a means of raising ride height and towing capacity.  Ricardo’s special vehicles director, Paul Tarry, said: “The adaptation of existing and well-proven automotive platforms for defence roles provides an opportunity to deliver a robust, fit-for-purpose and highly cost-effective package that is easy to maintain, benefiting as it does from an established international supply chain of parts and service. “However, it is also crucial in such adaptations to engineer a solution that meets the exacting requirements of the intended applications; even the most robust of commercially available vehicles is unlikely to meet this threshold without careful, role-specific adaptation of the type that Ricardo is ideally placed to provide.” Although the firm claims its new Ranger-based model demonstrates that it is well suited for military applications, it has not yet been confirmed that it will enter

News Roundup: Schwarzenegger sets teenage activist up with Tesla, Chevy unveils C8 convertible and more

Welcome to our weekly round-up of the biggest breaking stories on Driving.ca from this past week. Get caught up and ready to get on with the weekend, because it’s hard keeping pace in a digital traffic jam. Here’s what you missed while you were away. When Arnold met GretaWhen Arnold Schwarzenegger was introduced to 16-year-old climate activist Greta Thunberg at a European environmental summit earlier this year, he was thoroughly impressed. (Join the club, Arnold.) And then, when he learned she’d be making a North American tour, he offered to set his new friend up with one of the greenest ways to get around: a Tesla Model 3. Thunberg travelled to Montreal to participate in the climate strike along with approximately 500,000 others, and is continuing on to other events elsewhere in North America. 70-year-old B.C. driver given ticket for having cell phone in cup holderWhere do you keep your cell phone when you’re driving? Obviously, it’s illegal to hold it in your hand and use it – that’s distracted driving – but one senior citizen in B.C. was shocked to receive a ticket this week for having her smartphone charging in a cup holder. Randi Kramer, who’s had a clean driving record for the last 50 years or so, was issued a $368 ticket for distracted driving, despite not being distracted by her phone at all. Kramer plans to fight the ticket and her story has already got the attention of a local lawyer. The new C8 convertible arrives with folding hardtopThe 2020 Chevy Corvette Stingray was unveiled this week, and unlike the initial C8 launch that nearly broke the internet earlier this summer, there’s not so much to report on. The new model will be available with a folding hardtop only, and be powered by the same plant as the coupe: a 6.2-litre 490-horsepower V8. Chevy chose to reveal the convertible at the Kennedy Space Center’s Rocket Garden in Orlando, Florida as a nod to all the astronauts who’ve driven ‘Vettes over the years. The 2020 Corvette convertible will start at $78,998 when it arrives in Canada next spring. Watch Tesla owners damage their cars using the new Smart Summon featureA new software update downloaded into Teslas around the world last weekend, teaching the electric vehicles a highly anticipated new trick. Smart Summon automatically pilots empty cars across parking lots or driveways to their drivers, who summon them with the press of a button on an app. But despite the word “Smart” being right there in the name, and Tesla officially reminding driver they “are still responsible for (their) car and must monitor it and its surroundings at all times,” the new feature has occasionally hit a few snags. Or, more accurately, other vehicles and garage doors. Check out some of the Smart Summon fails caught on camera and already making the rounds online. Russian YouTuber tests how many spokes your car wheel actually needsHow many spokes is enough spokes? Sure, all of them would be ideal, but when push came to shove, how many could you still drive with? Like, if you literally pushed and shoved (or cut) the spokes off the wheels, like this Russian YouTuber did, how far would you get? Turns out, pretty far! The Garage 54 YouTube channel, which is dedicated to these kind of automotive “torture tests,” fits an old car with a bunch of tires with a varying number of the alloy spokes removed, and basically drives around on them until they break. The language dubbing is bearable, but the video itself is highly

BMW unveils X5 M and X6 M, with Competition packages for each

BMW X5M BMW X6MBMW Whereas once it used to focus on hot wagons basically suicide for sales these days now BMW is turning its performance aspirations on tuned versions of its popular SUVs. The next trucks to receive the M treatment are the companys X5 and X6.From the outside, you probably wouldnt know it was an M, if you didnt see the badges. A black grille and new splitter are present, and there are a couple new gills in the side panels to go along with the aerodynamically optimized mirrors.Under the skin is where the changes really matter, though. For the M versions of both vehicles, BMWs venerable 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 from the M5 has been pressed into service, making 600 horsepower and 553 lb.-ft. of torque. Stepping up to the Competition spec in either model means a bump up to a whopping 625 horsepower. The massive power boost from stock means the performance has also, well, improved, to make an understatement. Now 100 km/h shows up from zero in just 3.9 seconds for the M, and 3.8 seconds for the M Competition. Both engines are hooked up to an eight-speed automatic transmission.Unfortunately, BMW has not included a selectable rear-drive mode like it has in the M5, so drivers will have to settle for the 4WD Sport mode when making those pulls. Peel back a few more layers and we see the overpowered people-haulers also sport an M electronic differential, M exhaust and M brakes (which are a huge 15.6 and 15 inches, front and rear, respectively).Canadian pricing and availability have not been

Bentley unveils one-off Continental GT art car

Bentley has unveiled a one-off version of its Continental GT W12 painted by renowned Icelandic artist Katrin Fridriks.  Created as a collaboration between London’s JD Malat Gallery and Bentley’s Jack Barclay dealership, the car wears a custom livery inspired by Fridriks’ show, Speed of Light – Commander.  The car’s paintwork is primarily black, but Fridriks’ addition of a swirling grey pattern is said to imbue “the car with a sense of speed and motion, even at rest”.  In her wider Speed of Light – Commander show, Fridriks adopts speed as a central motif, focusing more particularly on the speed of light.  Fridriks said: “I’m so excited about working in partnership with Jack Barclay Bentley to create this unique, automotive artwork. “It’s the perfect marriage of the cornerstones of my art – capturing speed and energy, design, craftsmanship, precision and a strive for excellence.” The model pictured here is a show car, but Bentley will make one Fridriks art car available for sale, with the buyer able to specify their preferred trim. Pricing is available on application, and expected to be well in excess of the standard W12’s £159,000 starting price.  The one-off has been signed by the artist, and will be on display at Jack Barclay Bentley in Mayfair, London, until 7 October, alongside a collection of her other works. It will then travel to the nearby JD Malat Gallery to be shown at a number of special events.  The Continental artwork is the latest in a series of limited-run and one-off models unveiled by Bentley this year. As part of the firm’s 100th anniversary celebrations, it has launched special editions of its Bentayga, Continental, Flying Spur and Mulsanne models, as well as reviving its iconic Blower and Corniche classic sports

Volkswagen unveils new branding as part of company-wide reboot

Volkswagen has unveiled a new brand identity alongside the pivotal ID 3 electric car at the Frankfurt motor show today (Monday), as it attempts to draw a line under the fallout from the Dieselgate scandal.  The revelations in October 2015 about how the firm had cheated diesel emissions tests sparked a clear-out of its leadership group, and sparked a heavy investment in electric technology. The first result of that will be the ID 3, the first car based on the VW Group’s electric-only MEB platform.  The new logo is a two-dimensional design in order to work better on digital platforms, with thinner lines. While it maintains the company’s traditional ‘VW’ roundel design, the letter W no longer touches the bottom of the circular frame. The firm while also adopt a more flexibile use of colours, for example with the logo set to appear in red on future GTI models. As well, the logo will be accompanied by the new use of a ‘floating line’, and Volkswagen is introducing a new official female voice, and a ‘sound logo’ for use in television adverts. The firm has also introduced a new font, along with other changes. The redesign is the work of VW design chief Klaus Bischoff, and will be rolled out across the firm’s factories and dealerships in stages in the coming years. The firm estimates around 70,000 logos will be switched at more than 10,000 dealerships and service facilities in 154 countries. Termed ‘New Volkswagen’, the design revamp goes far beyond a new logo. Chief operating officer Ralf Brandstätter calls it a “pivotal moment”, as significant as a new-car launch.  Speaking at the unveiling, VW sales chief Jurgen Stackmann said: “The brand is undergoing a fundamental transformation towards a future with a neutral emission balance for everyone. Now is the right time to make the new attitude of our brand visible to the outside world.” The roots of ‘New Volkswagen’ began following a board meeting after Herbert Diess took over the firm’s top role in the wake of the crisis. At that meeting, VW looked beyond Dieselgate, to the declining profitability of several models, the upcoming EU 95g/km emission targets and the firm’s struggle in key regions such as the US.  The result was the Transform 2025+ plan, under which several models were scrapped and extra focus was put on expanding VW’s SUV range. Diess also approved the development of the MEB platform and a push to electric cars, along with heavy investment in digital services.  The changes went even deeper: the firm spun off its components division and worked to cut the complexity of its line-up (reducing the number of parts offered, trimming its global model range by 50% and engine and gearbox variants by 40%). Those changes have already increased VW’s profit margin, from 1.8% in 2015 to 5.2% in the first half of this year.  Brandstätter also said the firm has introduced “a fundamental cultural change”, with a more open attitude backed by a new internal ‘integrity’ programme designed to stop a repeat of Dieselgate.  Brandstätter said: “It starts with the executives: we set an example. Everyone can stand up and speak out. As managers, it is up to us to listen and respond.”  The first phase of Transform 2025+ was about ‘fixing’ VW – and the rebrand is the culmination of that and the launch point for the next step.  VW’s first goal is to become a market leader in electric cars, with the aim of selling one million per year by 2025. Brandstätter described that as “the lodestar of our strategy” and the key will be the economy of scale enabled by both the flexible MEB platform and the firm’s bulk purchasing power when it comes to batteries.  The goal is to produce 15 million vehicles – of more than 20 different models – on the first-generation MEB, using eight plants worldwide. Brandstätter’s ultimate target is “emission-free mobility for all” – not just with a fleet of EVs, but also with a pledge for carbon-neutral production.  “When we drew up Transform 2025+ in 2015, we had no idea of the scale on which the social debate would shift to climate change,” Brandstätter said.  There’s a risk for VW here, given Dieselgate helped fuel opposition against combustion-engined cars. Brandstätter referred to “some hard lessons” the company has learned and that “our big size means responsibility”. The firm estimates that its overall operations are responsible for 1% of global CO2 production.  VW is also committed to increasing the ‘digitalisation’ of its products and company – including how it interacts with customers – and has invested £3.6 billion in doing so.  That includes a huge push to engage with customers online directly, starting with the pre-order process for the ID 3. VW customers will be given an online ‘ID’ as the first step in a new sales model next year. VW has renegotiated contracts with nearly all of its European dealer network to allow it to communicate directly with customers, effectively becoming a retailer rather than a wholesaler.

Mercedes-AMG unveils 2021 GLE 53 Coupe

2021 Mercedes-AMG GL# 53 CoupeHandout / Mercedes-Benz Blurring the lines of vehicle segments has been a Mercedes hallmark ever since they dropped the Hammer on an unsuspecting sedan-buying public. Crossover coupes, which arent really coupes at all, take that blurring of lines to the next level. The newest entrant to this increasingly crowded field? The 2021 GLE 53 Coupe. Pardon us while we check our calendars.Of course, the 53 bears no relation to its actual engine size, which is a 3.0-litre inline-six making a healthy 429 horsepower. Juicing the works is 48-volt technology, part of its EQ Boost system and delivering an additional 21 horses and 184lb.-ft of torque. Combustion torque peaks at 384lb.-ft., while the run to 100 km/h from rest is yours in just 5.3 seconds. 2021 Mercedes-AMG GLE 53 Coupe Tied to this powerplant is the AMG Speedshift nine-speed automatic transmission, a unit which can be shifted via steering wheel paddles or simply left in D like Pops Vistacruiser. Power is sent to all corners via Mercedes 4MATIC+ all-wheel drive system, assuring this thing will cling to corners like a frightened cat to a wool blanket. As a crossover ‘coupe’, this GLE 53 prioritizes pace (and looks) over space, meaning theres a whole lot more sport than utility in the interior. Its fastback shape cleaves several cubic feet from the cargo area in the name of style, while high-contrast color options jack the visual drama to eleven and beyond. We prefer this new Mercedes design language to anything built by Affalterbach in recent memory. 2021 Mercedes-AMG GLE 53 Coupe Spotting a GLE 53 Coupe wont be difficult, thanks to AMG-specific features like sporty air outlets, a front splitter-type feature, and several superfluous louvers. The newly redesigned rear bumper features AMG details like a diffuser and round twin tailpipe finishers. A special Night Package blacks out most of the chrome, if youre into that type of look.Active Ride Control is also an option, featuring two independently operating electro-mechanical actuators at the front and rear axle. This system reduces body roll when cornering and allows more precise control of cornering properties and load change characteristics. It can balance out one-sided bumps, a feature that will surely please Miss
