BMW teases its upcoming 8 Series Gran Coupe

BMW released a teaser image early May of a sleek four-door sedan it calls a Gran Coupe, based on the brand-new 8 Series. The teaser image shows us—not much. That would be why they call it a teaser. However, BMW is more comfortable showing off a little bit more sheet metal than other brands, as we can see the entire outline of the vehicle, as well as the cutlines for the added rear doors. Call us crazy, but this is a handsome looking car, isn’t it? The standard 8 Series has a smaller greenhouse, which makes the sides of the car look larger, but this version appears to fix that problem and give the car better proportions. The fascia and rear end are expected to be the same as the two-door’s. Under the hood of the 8 Series Gran Coupe will most likely be the same 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 found in the standard M850i coupe, which produces a healthy 523 horsepower and 533 lb.-ft. of torque. BMW could release less powerful engine options for the 8 Series, which will likely make their debut on the Gran Coupe. All-wheel drive and an eight-speed automatic will come standard. The model will be fully revealed at the BMW Welt event in Munich between June 25 and 27, and will go on sale officially come September. Canadian pricing has not been announced, but we expect it will be a few dollars more than the coupe, which is priced at

Polestar reveals more details about its upcoming 2 EV

2020 Polestar 2Supplied / Polestar Gradually — very gradually a cynic might say — we’re getting a handle on this whole Polestar project. In San Francisco, not far from the Silicon Valley startups that seem to influence so much of Polestar’s modus operandi, the Swedish/Chinese upstart peeled away yet another layer of the onion that is its first all-electric car, the Polestar 2. What this latest layer revealed is an interior worthy of its German — and, not forgetting Tesla, its American — competition, a little more detail on the pricing/range equation and a whole bunch on how Polestar plans on flogging its emissions-reduced performance future. First and foremost, Polestar in Canada will, no surprise here, focus its attention on the sophisticated hubs of Vancouver, Montreal and Toronto, places where its new sales language — one doesn’t go to a dealer anymore, you visit a space and you certainly don’t “option” your car, you “curate” it — will find a welcome home. Initial “Launch” cars will cost $69,000 and will include everything but the Sport Package (20-inch tires and Ohlins suspension) and leather seats (the standard seat coverings are vegan, by the way). That’s for the 78 kilowatt-hour version that boast a 275-mile EPA-assured range and 500 kilometres EU rated range (if you’re wondering why those numbers don’t convert, it’s because, like all continental ratings, their EV testing standards are a little more, uhm, liberal). Rumours of a shorter-range, possibly 40 kWh, version are exactly that; rumour. China will be getting an entry-level version but the cheapest 2 we Nord Americanos will see will be a stripped 78-kWh version that will undercut the launch version by some 10 grand. It will also only arrive after the “Launch” version, which is due in about a year from now. One last interesting little tidbit: At least initially, the 2 will be available for traditional purchase or lease as well as the “subscription” basis that the company is pushing so hard. The big news from this latest (of what is sure to be many) reveal was a quick peek at Google’s new embedded — as opposed to projected, i.e. from your phone — in-car infotainment system. Called Android Automotive — yes, I easily confused it with Android Auto too — it is an even more seamless integration of the Google user interface into the touchscreen, which, unsurprisingly, looks an awful lot like Volvo’s 11-inch portrait-oriented screen. We’ll be covering its operation in tomorrow’s Motor Mouth, but we’ll leave you with this little tidbit. The Polestar 2 doesn’t require a key. You don’t even have to push a button to start it. Your phone is the key and a weight sensor in the driver’s seat is the electric motor’s on/off switch. Tres

Volkswagen hints at upcoming rugged electric 4×4

Volkswagen is considering an all-electric off-roader as part of its new ID family of vehicles, design boss Klaus Bischoff has confirmed. The firm will later this year launch the production version of the ID hatch, the first machine built on its new MEB platform – and it will be followed by a string of fully electric models on that architecture in the coming years. Speaking on the eve of the Shanghai motor show, where the firm launched a new ID Roomzz large SUV concept, Bischoff responded to a question about Volkswagen producing a more traditional MEB-based 4×4 by saying: “Maybe one of the next ID family members is a more rugged thing than we have seen.”  At Geneva, Volkswagen launched an ID Buggy concept, which is intended as a small-volume lifestyle machine that could be produced by partners. However, it also serves as a proof of concept for a possible electric off-roader. The instant torque of an electric car would be ideally suited to off-road driving, and the MEB platform has been designed to house a powertrain with electric motors on each axle, offering all-wheel drive. A dedicated MEB off-roader would offer substantially more ground clearance than the ID Crozz SUV concept Volkswagen previously revealed – and Bischoff admitted this could cause design issues.  “The higher and more boxy you go, the harder the aerodynamics are – it’s the biggest hurdle,” he said. “You can lose 60km of range by doing this.” With such a model likely to be a few years away, Volkswagen would have time to address the range issues with more advanced battery technology. Volkswagen recently showcased a concept of a remote EV charging station, which uses recycled ID car batteries, as a way of installing charging points in remote locations away from power infrastructure. That system could also make the concept of an electric off-roader a more viable production proposition from
