BMW M has revealed the third generation of its performance SUV flagships, the X5 M and coupé-styled X6 M, with both available in Competition form for the first time. Detailed ahead of their public debut at November’s LA motor show, both are set for a market launch commencing in April next year. A spokesperson has confirmed that the UK will only be able to order the Competition variants, priced from £110,610 for the X5 M and £113,310 for the X6 M. They will rival the Porsche Cayenne and Cayenne Coupé in Turbo forms, and are both powered by BMW M’s now familiar twin-turbocharged 4.4-litre V8. The standard X5 M and X6 M put out 592bhp, which is 25bhp more than both outgoing models. However, in keeping with the tradition set first by the latest M5, the Competition models boost this output to 616bhp. Torque is pegged at 553lb ft in all variants. The motor in both is mated to an eight-speed automatic gearbox with all-wheel drive and an Active M differential, said to help deliver the power through the wheels over any terrain. BMW claims super-stiff engine mountings boost response and refinement, while the engine oil supply system has been designed to cope with extensive track use. The result is a 0-62mph time quoted at 3.9sec for both cars, and a 0-124mph time of 13.7sec for the X5 M and 13.5sec for the X6 M. The Competition models drop the 0-62mph sprint down to 3.8sec, while the 0-124mph sprint is 13.4sec for the X5 M and 13.2sec for the X6 M. All models hit the same 155mph limiter unless you spec the optional M Driver’s Package, which raises the top speed to 180mph. Conversely, BMW quotes between 21.7mpg and 22.6mpg, depending on model and spec, with CO2 figures ranging from 284-296g/km. Competition models also feature the M Sport exhaust upgrade as standard (it’s optional on the regular cars), which is said to offer even greater aural thrills than the base M models’ already uprated exhaust system. This being a full-fat M model, there’s also substantial chassis upgrades. Alongside the Active M differential, the xDrive all-wheel drive gives a rear-biased power delivery, with even more power shifted to the rear in the 4WD Sport drive mode. Standard-fit adaptive suspension with electronic dampers and an active roll stabilisation system are drafted in, as is Servotronic steering with a specific M tuning. The X5 M and X6 M’s braking system also offers two settings for pedal feel. Both the X5 M and X6 M benefit from the usual array of M-specific design details, including larger air intakes, ‘gills’ on the front wing, drag-reducing exterior mirrors, a rear spoiler and a diffuser element surrounding the four-exit tailpipes. Competition models add specific M light alloy wheels (21in front, 22in rear) and unique badging. The interior features a host of new menu functions to allow extensive configuration of the drive modes. Specific set-ups can be saved and accessed via M buttons on the wheel, while M-specific instrument readouts and M performance seats complete the roster of changes. Jeep adds a brace of new variants to the Wrangler line
2020 Jeep Wrangler Willys Edition In a time-honoured tradition of keeping public interest high in the years after a vehicle launch, Jeep is introducing a pair of new trims to the Wrangler lineup. For 2020, customers will have the added choice of a Willys or Black Tan edition. The Willys trim was offered on previous-gen JK Wranglers, where it proved to be a popular option, but this is the first time weve seen it on the new JL.For those unfamiliar, think of the Willys as kind of a Rubicon-lite and youve got the basic idea.It features a limited-slip rear diff, Rubicon rock rails and shocks, heavy-duty brakes and 32-inch Firestone mud terrain tires. This kit, combined with the part-time Command-Trac 44 system which has a two-speed transfer case and a 2.72:1 low-range ratio, gives the Willys much of the Rubicons off-road cred without breaking the bank. Alert readers will have noted those Firestones as an oddity, given the mighty Rubicon wears KO2 shoes. Your author has heard through the grapevine that the manufacturer cannot keep up with tire demand, requiring a switch to Firestones for the Willys. Take that for what you will.Eagle-eyed Jeep spotters will identify a Willys mainly by way of its military-spec hood lettering and gloss black grille. LED peepers are on board as standard, a nice touch. Its available in ten colours and will cost $2,900 on top of a Sport S model.Adding some heritage flair is the Black Tan model which, as you may have surmised, deploys a black-and-tan colour scheme.Offered in all exterior colours, the BT edition features 17-inch dark wheels wrapped in all-terrain tires, snazzy side steps, dark badging and a premium tan soft top. This bundle will set you back $1,995 over and above the Sport S, and is available on both the two- and four-door

New Mazda 3: UK prices for Skyactiv-X variants announced
Mazda has confirmed UK pricing and specifications for Skyactiv-X-powered variants of the new 3. The 2.0-litre four-cylinder powertrain, which uses the brand’s newly developed spark plug-controlled compression ignition technology, can be equipped from £23,555. This starting price applies to both the hatchback variant and the saloon, which will arrive in the UK in October. The unit will be offered with a manual or automatic gearbox, and is available on four trim lines: entry-level Sport, Sport Lux, GT Sport and range-topping GT Sport Tech, which tops the line-up at a starting price of £29,775 for the hatch and £27,575 for the saloon. Sport trim comes equipped as standard with rear privacy glass, chrome detailing and a frameless rear view mirror, while Sport Lux adds keyless entry, a reversing camera and heated front seats. Higher up the range, GT Sport is offered with electrically adjustable leather seats, a heated steering wheel and Bose sound system, and top-spec models receive a 360deg camera and additional driver safety aids. All Skyactiv-X models feature a 7in digital instrument display and Mazda’s new 8.8in infotainment central display, but 18 in alloy wheels, black badges and a wider exhaust tailpipe are added beyond Sport trim. The firm says the new engine combines the performance of a petrol engine with the fuel economy of a diesel. The unit has been confirmed to deliver 178bhp and 165lb ft of torque, while producing a fuel economy of up to 52.3mpg on the WLTP cycle, with CO2 emissions from 96g/km. The economy and CO2 figures depend on model, wheel size and choice of gearbox. The powertrain will also include Mazda’s M Hybrid system, a 24V mild-hybrid unit that can regain energy under braking. The new Skyactiv-X engine is the most marked feature of the new 3, given that it has the potential to breathe new life into petrol power amid stricter emissions and efficiency targets. It also promises “superior initial response, powerful torque, faithful linear response and free-revving performance”, says Mazda. Powertrain boss Ichiro Hirose confirmed to Autocar that the powertrain is scalable for petrol engines with more or less displacement. The Volkswagen Golf and Ford Focus rival, unveiled at the Los Angeles motor show, features the Japanese car maker’s new design language seen on the Vision Coupé concept of 2018. The Skyactiv-X unit is the third to become available on the 3: the car was initially launched with a 120bhp 2.0-litre Skyactiv-G petrol featuring a 24V mild-hybrid system (starting from £20,595) and a 114bhp 1.8-litre Skyactiv-D diesel (starting at £22,395). The new Mazda 3 introduces the firm’s new Skyactiv Vehicle Architecture, an umbrella term for a number of new structures including seats that maintain the natural curve of the spine and a ring-structure bodyshell that increases rigidity, reduces transmission lag and improves noise, vibration and harshness levels. All of these features form part of Mazda Premium, a goal by the firm to position itself more in line with traditional premium car brands. The latest version of Mazda’s i-Activ AWD system, an option exclusively on hatchbacks in GT Sport Tech trim, works with the car’s torque vectoring to control torque distribution between the front and rear wheels. This makes the car respond better to driver input than previously, according to Mazda. It is the first four-wheel drive family hatch the company has offered since the 323 AWD. Inside the new 3, Mazda said it has focused on ergonomics and ensuring a good driving position and visibility. The infotainment system has been redesigned to be more intuitive to use, while speakers have been positioned, following research, to ensure excellent sound quality. Safety systems include a driver monitoring system that uses an infrared camera and LED to observe the driver and sounds an alert if the system considers the situation is

Audi to introduce 7 new SUV variants by year’s end
As if we needed any further proof crossovers and SUVs are here to stay and not just a passing fad, top brass at Audi announced the company will present seven completely new SUV variants (that is, without predecessors) in 2019. It’s the without predecessors notation that made us sit up and take notice. According to text from the AGM, these seven new variants will include two “particularly sporty” versions of the big-dog Q8. Could this portend an S8 and RS Q8, perhaps? Audi’s biggest SUV with a Urus-derived engine would be quite cool. Mentioned along with these mysterious Q8 variants were Q3 Sportback and e-tron Sportback models. It doesn’t take a genius to figure out that Audi have been looking at the coupe-ification of SUVs happening at other German brand, and is now looking for a piece of the action. Specifically, Audi said it will launch the design-oriented Sportback concept in its SUV family. Elsewhere, the company says they will significantly expand the Audi On Demand flexible premium mobility service. As of the fourth quarter, customers in 10 European countries will successively be able to access up to 10,000 Audi vehicles and use them flexibly. Plans call for a shoring up of dealer support to facilitate these plans. This will be the umbrella brand for all Audi mobility solutions, from short-term bookings to long-term vehicle use. In the first quarter of 2019, deliveries of the Audi brand decreased by 3.6 per cent to 447,247 vehicles, compared to 263,750 in 2018. This happened due to to certain supply issues causing some models to be quite thin on the ground. Here at home, Audi moved 6,404 vehicle in the first quarter of this year, down from 7,936 in 2018. This can be partially attributed to vehicle supply issues as well. This sales performance places Audi ahead of Lexus and Acura, but behind the eight-ball compared to BMW and
