Toyota has revealed a dramatic new Mirai Concept, which previews the second-generation version of its hydrogen fuel cell vehicle, ahead of this year’s Tokyo motor show. The new hydrogen-powered machine is described as “a final-stage development model of the second-generation Mirai” and Toyota promises a major step forward in fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV) technology. It claims the new model offers a 30% increase in driving range over the current model, which has a range of just over 300 miles, along with improved driving performance. The new Mirai Concept is built on Toyota’s latest TNGA platform and features dramatic new styling, including a revamped front with a bold grille and a sweeping, coupé-esque rear. Toyota claims increased body rigidity and a lower centre of gravity than the original Mirai. The concept measures 4935mm long and 1885mm wide, with a wheelbase of 2920mm. It sits on 20in wheels and retains the four-door saloon layout of the original Mirai, which was launched in 2014. The interior has also been reworked. It features a 12.3in central touchscreen and a digital instrument display, with many of the controls moved to the centre of the dashboard. Notably, the Mirai now has five seats instead of the original’s four, which, Toyota says, has been enabled by a reworking of the hydrogen fuel cell configuration. Aside from the claimed increase in range, Toyota has not given specific details of development work done on the fuel cell powertrain. But it says the system, including the fuel cell stack, has been entirely redesigned and offers increased hydrogen storage. An iPhone is connected to a 2016 Chevrolet Malibu equipped with Apple CarPlay apps. Let’s face it, most OEM’s stock operating software isn’t the greatest. The GPS is glitchy and slow, the audio controls are laborious and the general app layout is labyrinthian. Compared to the smartphone in your pocket, the screen on your dash is a bit of a dum-dum. That’s why AppleCarplay and Android Auto are such game-changers. The programs allow for a car’s system to act as display and control for an iOS or Android device, giving your ride all the friendly functionality of your phone. But what if your car isn’t compatible with Apple CarPlay and its ilk? Can you get Apple CarPlay retrofitted to older models? The answer to that question is yes — depending on what you drive. Through a process called “flashing” or “reflashing,” some cars’ computer software can be upgraded to allow for the integration of programs like Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, but there are some limitations. Namely, that it only works on vehicles with modern-enough computer modules. “Most people know that modern-day cars are almost more computer than car, and basically what flashing does is allows you to add things to your vehicle that weren’t there from the factory,” says Chad Cole, owner/operator of Coastal Flash in Victoria, B.C. “Ten years down the road, the screen (on a flashed car) could look and act the same as a brand-new car’s”Cole, 26, found himself drawn into the industry when he went searching for ways to update the module on his own 2014 GMC Sierra. Finding the existing services lacking and overpriced, he decided to learn how to do it on his own, despite not having any experience in the realm. Today, Coastal Flash services GM models from 2013 to 2019 exclusively, offering a range of customizations, from updating navigation system to unlocking reverse cameras to function while the vehicle is in motion to allowing for video display in motion and, most commonly, adding Apple CarPlay or Android Auto functionality. “It’s amazing how many people prefer (CarPlay), and I understand why,” says Cole. “The first reason is that OEM GPS kind of sucks, to be honest with you… So, by adding CarPlay, not only do you get a fancy screen that you can do all sorts of useful stuff on, but you get the ability to add GPS to a car that may not have come with GPS.”Another factor driving people to update their vehicles to accept CarPlay and Auto is the fact automakers aren’t as on the ball with providing software updates, leaving most people with years-out-of-date technology mounted to their dash. “What’s neat about CarPlay and Android Auto is the fact that it actually runs updates,” says Cole. “Looking at your vehicle 10 years down the road, the screen (on a flashed car) will potentially look and act the same as that of a brand-new car, and I think that’s also appealing to people.” Some modern automakers are already using the constant-update model. Tesla, for one, pushes regular software updates to its vehicles when theyre connected to Wifi hotspots. Other automakers require owners to bring their vehicles in for service to receive such updates.And though the majority of new vehicles come with the compatibility built in, for the most part, automakers aren’t helping update the old ones. BMW and VW, two brands commonly flashed by amateurs, don’t offer any official retrofitting services at dealer centres. Mazda, however, does. Canadian Mazda owners are able to retrofit CarPlay or Auto into any Mazda that’s equipped with the Mazda Connect infotainment system, including the 2014 Mazda3, 2016 Mazda6, 2016 MX-5, 2016 CX-3, 2016 CX-5 and 2016 CX-9. According to a Mazda Canada spokesperson, the retrofit includes a hardware and software update that takes about 1.5 hours at a Mazda dealer and costs $445. Similar services by Coastal Flash’s North American competition cost US$900, but by keeping his overhead low, Cole is able to offer the CarPlay/Android Auto HMI Upgrade for almost half the price. Conveniently, most flashing tasks don’t require a technician to actually lay hands on the car. Owners simply remove the onboard computer module, an act that Cole says can be “as simple as replacing a cabin air filter,” and ship it to Coastal Flash’s HQ on the West Coast. There, Cole uses a computer system that is “the equivalent of a car” to reformat or tweak the module’s programming. Most upgrades are sent back to their owners within a week. The fact that a young man with no previous experience is able to operate one of the leading companies in the game from a coastal corner of our nation is testament to how new this whole “flashing” thing is. The fact that he’s busy every day of the week, updating cars from all over the US and Canada, suggests we’ve really only touched the tip of the iceberg.

Petro-Canadas Regina station soft-launched on Tuesday, and three more in the province are expected to be up and running by the end of September.Tesla is planning to have seven Supercharger stations in the province this year, with some already under construction. Canadian Tire is planning 10 charging locations, and is hoping to have them operating towards the end of next year.The Tesla and Petro-Canada charging stations are both part of cross-country networks, meaning the all the Saskatchewan locations will be near the Trans-Canada Highway. Matthew Pointer, the founder of the Saskatchewan Electric Vehicle Association, said charging times at older stations ranged from three to four hours. The new stations will be able to fully charge a vehicle in 30 to 45 minutes, and as short as 20 minutes at Teslas Supercharger stations.Its a significant boost for us. Its actually the biggest infrastructure thing that weve seen in Saskatchewan ever as far as electric vehicles, said Pointer. Pointer said EV owners typically charge their vehicles at home, making charging stations ideal when going on long-distance trips. Saskatoon does have charging stations, but neither Tesla nor Petro-Canada have listed any upcoming locations in the city. Electric vehicle chargepoints should offer card payment by 2020
All new public charging points should offer contactless payment via credit or debit card by spring next year, the Government has stipulated, as it seeks to address a key issue surrounding electric-vehicle usage. While the requirement is not mandatory, the Government announced today that it “expects industry to develop a roaming solution across the charging network, allowing electric vehicle drivers to use any public chargepoint through a single payment method without needing multiple smartphone apps or membership cards”. It added that if the market is too slow to deliver improvements across the (charging point) network, it is “prepared to intervene to ensure a good deal for consumers by using powers in the Automated and Electric Vehicles Act”. With more than 50 charging point providers in the UK, the variety of payment methods required to be able to use a range of charging points has become a major source of frustration for EV drivers. The announcement comes as BP Chargemaster, operator of one of the UK’s largest public charging networks, published plans to introduce contactless card payment to all new 50kW and 150kW chargers. It will also retrofit existing rapid chargers over the next 12 months. However, the firm stated that contactless payment would be for “occasional users” to its charging points, and added that it will “continue to lead with its Polar Plus subscription” service. A BP Chargemaster spokesman told Autocar: “The benefit of contactless payment will mostly be realised by those charging infrequently, who may not have used our network before. Today, the majority of usage on our network is from subscribers, and that market will grow with higher utilisation from fleets and businesses, particularly with the introduction of the BP Fuel Charge card – the UK’s first combined fuel card for liquid fuels and EV charging.” When asked about the comparative costs of contactless payment versus a subscription, he said: “The Polar Plus subscription costs £7.85 per month (with three months free for new users), with the benefits being a usage tariff that is half the price of using contactless, as well as RFID card access, which remains the quickest way to activate a charge point on our network.” The Government’s announcement did not mention pricing or its expectations regarding contactless payments costing the same as existing offerings. Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV stretches UK electric vehicle market lead The popular SUV leads both the outright sales chart and Q1 2019 figures Mitsubishi’s Outlander PHEV remains the best-selling electric vehicle in the UK, and tops the 2019 figures too despite being pushed hard by BMW’s 530e. According to the latest figures from the Department for Transport (DfT), Q1 2019 saw 1,602 Outlander PHEVs registered, compared to 1,550 BMW 530e registrations in the first three months of the year. In third place was BMW’s i3 – the combined figure for pure-electric, REX, i3, & i3s – with almost 1,000 units sold in Q1 2019. Three pure-electric models in the shape of the Jaguar I-Pace, Nissan Leaf, and Renault Zoe took positions 4-6 in the table, followed by PHEVs from the Mini Countryman Cooper S E, Range Rover Sport P400e, and Range Rover P400e rounding out the top 10. Looking at total sales, the 40,590 Outlander PHEVs on the road continues the SUVs long-running reign as the best-selling plug-in model in the UK. It’s a run that has stretched back four years to Q1 2015, the first set of figures from the DfT showing the Mitsubishi had overtaken the previous incumbent – Nissan’s Leaf. The Leaf continues in second spot overall, and the best-selling pure-electric model in the list, with 25,491 registrations by the end of March 2019. The DfT’s figures are always published a quarter behind where we are currently, so remain the latest set of figures open to evaluation. BMW’s 330e remains in third spot with more than 13,700 units, ahead of the i3 on almost 13,000 registrations, and the Mercedes Benz C 350e with more than 10,000 on the road. Fast movers in the sales table include the BMW 530e, which having only started seeing sales registered in Q1 2017, is now positioned in 7th spot outright just two years later on almost 9,750 units. Mini’s Countryman Cooper S E has also climbed quickly, in 11th place in the table with more than 3,800 units, despite no figures for it from the DfT until Q2 2017. Jaguar’s I-Pace has sold almost 1,700 units by the end of Q1 2019, despite only seeing three models registered in Q1 2018 – its first appearance on the table. JLR stablemate, the Range Rover P400e has identical sales figures, having only been on sale from Q4 2017. The identically powered Range Rover Sport is less than 20 units behind its larger Land Rover sibling, having gone on sale at the same time, with the two PHEVs split only by the VW e-Golf, which is one unit behind the I-Pace and Range Rover P400e on 1,679. It has been on sale since Q3 2014 though. The range-extended LEVC TX black cab continues to perform strongly in a short space of time, with almost 1,550 registered since Q4 2017, and unsurprisingly, Hyundai’s Kona Electric has almost 450 registrations, having only seen its first units appear in Q3 2018’s figures. Looking forward, Audi’s e-tron pure-electric SUV sold 63 units in Q1 2019, despite not having been on sale for the whole three months, so it will be interesting to see how well that does in the next quarter’s figures. The Kia e-Niro will likely have a few units on its figures too, and the Kona Electric & I-Pace are expected to continue their rapid growth. At a manufacturer level, BMW leads the way, with almost 46,000 units, a combined total from a large number of vehicles – the 225xe, 330e, 530e, 740e, i3, i8, and X5 40e. By contrast, Mitsubishi is in second place with more than 40,500 units, predominantly thanks to the Outlander PHEV and a couple of hundred i-MiEVs. Third is Nissan, just shy of 29,000 units thanks mainly to the Leaf, though with almost 3,500 e-NV200’s supporting that figure. VW is in fourth with a mixture of models – e-Golf, e-up!, Golf GTE, and Passat GTE – followed by Tesla’s all-electric line-up of Model S and Model X – plus a few Roadsters for good measure. It’s worth remembering that Tesla’s Model 3 has only just arrived in the UK, and therefore won’t appear in any significant number until Q3 2019’s figures. Looking at manufacturing groups, the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance is dominant in the UK market in terms of electric cars, with more than 79,500 units built up primarily from the Outlander PHEV, Leaf, and Renault Zoe. The BMW Group is second on a little under 50,000 units, with Mini’s Countryman Cooper S E added to those sales from BMW, and the VW Group is third on over 20,000 units, adding in Audi and Porsche figures to VW’s sales. In total, there are just over 200,000 electric vehicles on the DfT’s Q1 2019 figures, of which 68% are PHEVs and 32% pure-EVs. Almost 120 hydrogen fuel cell vehicles are included in the total.

When automotive collector John Dixon passed away in 2013, he left behind an impressive array of cars and memorabilia in the Ohio-based Taj Ma Garaj. In just a couple months, that entire collection, including this white 1953 Porsche 356 Limousine Custom, will be auctioned off by Canadian-headquartered classic car auction house RM Sotheby’s. The stretched 356 and ultimate prom vehicle is just one piece of the Taj Ma Garaj Collection, which includes over 30 cars, most of which are VW or Porsche models, and more than 350 bits and pieces of collectible goodies. It is, beyond a doubt, theultimate vehicle to take to prom. Originally, the car was but a simple 1953 Porsche “pre-A” 356 coupe, characterized in part by its V-shaped windscreen. Today, the limo retains that unique windscreen – along with other hints of the 356 like its front trunk and twin-carb engine – but has added a fair number of other features, including multiple doors and a soft-top sunroof that appears to have come from an old VW Beetle.Interestingly, however, there isn’t a lot of info on how and by whom the car was converted to its current state. Jalopnik points out there’s a Reutter badge on the rear, indicating they had something to do with the body build, but were they the audacious shop responsible for the generous stretch? A worker inserts a probe into the tailpipe of a car while performing an emissions test Canada has signed an agreement with California to tackle vehicle-borne pollution even as that state battles President Trump in the courts over tailpipe emissions.Catherine McKenna, Canadas Minister of Environment and Climate Change, signed a new cooperation agreement for cleaner transportation with Mary Nicols, chair of the California Air Resources Board (CARB).Uniquely among the U.S. states, California has the ability to set its own vehicle emissions standards, an authority dating back to the 1960s when it fought the smog that blanketed Los Angeles.Other states can choose to follow them, or to follow federal standards, which are not as stringent. Currently, fourteen states follow California regulations, along with the District of Columbia.The agreement is a commitment for Canada and California to work together on their respective regulations, in an effort to reduce the amount of greenhouse gas (GHG) pollutants coming from vehicles.The Canadian governments goal is for all light-duty vehicles sold in the country to be 100-per-cent zero-emission by 2040. With Canadas current regulations, 2025 model-year light-duty vehicles will burn up to 50 per cent less fuel, and emit 50 per cent less greenhouse gases, than vehicles built in 2008.California requires that automakers have zero-emission vehicles as a growing proportion of their sales, with the goal of 5 million zero-emission vehicles by 2030. One in ten new vehicles sold in California is a plug-in car, and the state accounts for half of all plug-in hybrid cars sold in the United States.The two will also share information on cleaner fuels. Canada is developing a Clean Fuel Standard intended to cut 30 million tonnes of emissions in 2030, the equivalent of retiring 7 million vehicles.California is currently suing the U.S. federal government, after Trump said last summer that the state would no longer be allowed to set its own standards. Trump is also trying to roll back federal standards set under Barack Obama in 2012, which require vehicles to improve in fuel efficiency each year through 2025. Canada aligned with the United States on Obamas stricter 2012 regulations, but is now reviewing that commitment in light of Trumps attempt to scrap the rules.In a statement, the David Suzuki Foundation, based in Vancouver, said that joining with jurisdictions like California in maintaining strong regulations is the right direction for Canada and puts the U.S. federal government, which is trying to weaken standards, on the wrong page.But the Canadian Automobile Dealers Association (CADA) said that aligning with a single state runs counter to the benefits of a single national standard with the United States. Volvo and Uber show off production-ready self-driving vehicle
Following two years of collaboration, Volvo and Uber are ready to show off their jointly developed production car capable of driving by itself. This follows several prototypes which were built with the goal of sussing out the companies’ self-driving car development efforts. The Volvo XC90 presented today is the first production car that, in combination with Uber’s self-driving system, is allegedly capable of fully driving itself. Your author would like to take a moment to welcome his new robot overlords. An array of sensors peppered atop and built into the vehicle are designed for Uber’s self-driving system to safely operate the machine and maneuver it in an urban environment. Several back-up systems are built into the thing for both steering and braking functions plus a dose of battery back-up power. Before you rush out and throw away your driving shoes, know that even though the companies say this machine is capable of handling driving duties all on its own, they aren’t ready to let it drive to the market on its own just yet. After describing the car, they go on to say that when paired with Volvo’s vehicle platform, Uber’s self-driving system may one day allow (emphasis mine) for safe, reliable autonomous ridesharing without the need for a Mission Specialist. A Mission Specialist, if you’re wondering, is the human bag of meat hired by Uber to sit behind the wheel and take command should things go awry. The team says they are specially trained Uber employees “operating and overseeing the car” in areas designated and suitable for autonomous driving. Volvo Cars plans to use a similar autonomous base vehicle concept for the introduction of its future autonomous drive cars in the early 2020s. These technologies will apparently include features designed to enable unsupervised autonomous drive in clearly designated areas such as highways and ring roads. Let’s hope these robot overlords are more like the sentient characters in the movie Cars and less like the psychotic transport trucks in Stephen King’s Maximum

The 2019 Audi e-Tron, the luxury automakers first fully electric series-production model, will be in Canadian showrooms in the spring and pricing starts in the $90,000 neighbourhood.Audi Canada Volkswagens luxury brand Audi is recalling its first all-electric vehicle due to the risk of a battery fire. The company issued a voluntary recall of approximately 540 E-Tron SUV models sold in the U.S. because of a risk that moisture can seep into the battery cell through a wiring harness glitch, spokesman Mark Dahncke said. The company isn’t aware of any fires or injuries because of the flaw, which affects a total of 1,644 models, he said. The E-Tron, which went on sale in the U.S. in April, is Audi’s first fully-electric car and one in a wave of contenders from traditional automakers looking to challenge Tesla’s dominance of the segment. While electric vehicles are no more prone to accidents or fires than gasoline-powered cars – and might be less so, according the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration – the lithium-ion battery technology that powers them is still evolving, and there is no consensus on safe system design. Audi said there have been five instances globally where a battery fault light turned on because of the moisture issue. It began contacting E-Tron owners in the U.S. last week, prior to a warning from federal safety regulators, and should have a repair available by August. “We are applying an abundance of caution as no such incidents have been reported globally,” the company said in a statement. Audi said it’s offering E-Tron owners loaner vehicles and an $800 cash card to cover gas or incidentals during the recall period, as well as free roadside assistance.
