These 5 electric vehicles look old-school but are all-new

New EVs are ugly. Its a fact, deal with it. Another fact is most new cars are ugly, but thats another story altogether.Whatever it is about electric cars, theres something about their design and save the world mission statement that automakers interpret as futuristic. This leads them to deduce the vehicles must look like theyre straight out of Star Trek.Unfortunately, theyre wrong, and when you have the technology to make a vehicle look like anything, you should make it look old. These vehicles imagine what would have happened if the electric cars of the 19th century received half as much attention as gasoline-powered vehicles, and shaped the world into the electric future we dare to call retro. In short, here are five retro EVs.Morris Commercial JEMade to resemble the brands J-Type van of the 1940s, the Morris JE is a modern interpretation of the classic panel van, with little to no styling updates. Good. With a range of 200 miles (320 km) and a price tag of $75,000, the JE isnt going to win over any Tesla buyers, but that doesnt matter, because its already won our hearts. Its also available in a few different configurations, including cargo, passenger and pickup.Microlino microcarConventional wisdom suggests it aint a good idea, locking yourself in a fridge, but we immediately decided to make an exception to that rule when we took one look at the Microlino, styled after the BMW Isetta microcar of the 1950s.When the BMW Isetta was introduced in the 1950s, BMW was a struggling car brand, crippled by the woes of post-war Germany. The small, affordable vehicle brought some much needed money back to the brand, and saved it from ruin. The new version costs $18,000, and is good for 125 miles (200 km) on a charge. Hopefully the Isetta moves on from saving companies to saving the planet.Nobe 100How many wheels do you need? Three is plenty, especially when you look as good as this retro EV. We mean, cmon, the Nobe 100 looks like it was ripped straight out of Raymond Loewys sketchbook. This car could be made available, and by that, we mean its development is being crowdfunded, so whether it makes production will depend on demand from consumers which we hope will be massive. After all, 136 miles (220 km) per charge and an MSRP of $45,000 should guarantee brisk sales.Renault e-Plein AirIs a Fiat Jolly too mainstream to you? Consider this French alternative! Putting the passengers right out in the open, the Renault e-Plein Air is an open-top version of the Renault 4 of the 1960s. Under the stylish skin is the tech from the brands Twizy vehicle. No pricing as of yet, as its still just a concept, but hopefully this one becomes a reality. Were sure the Pope would love one as a gift.Honda EOK, so maybe this one is not as retro as the others the Honda E’s looks are based on a car thats not too old to begin with, the Honda Civic. But do we care? Not one bit.The fabulous styling of the Honda E makes some of us remember our high school days, or maybe your dads high school days. We think 136 miles (220 km) of range should be perfect to get you around the city and back, and for just $42,000.LISTEN: Electric vehicle clubs have been around for decades, and up until just recently their memberships consisted of backyard tinkerers converting gas-powered vehicles to electric vehicles. Now that most global automakers are producing Evs, where does that leave these clubs? In this weeks episode of Plugged In we talk with Bruce Stout of the Vancouver Electric Vehicle Association about that and much more.

These 10 vehicles are 2019’s least reliable models according to Consumer Reports

Consumer Reports has revealed its list of the top 10 least reliable vehicle models for 2019, and, shocking no one, its filled mostly with cars from American automakers. To evaluate the vehicles, Consumer Reports tests 17 problem areas, including squeaky brakes, broken interior trim, out-of-warranty transmission repairs and four-wheel-drive issues. The severity of each problem is weighted to give a Predicted Reliability Score, cross-referenced with track tests and owner satisfaction survey results to give the final score. Some 420,000 vehicle owners are surveyed in the test.Yes, not unexpectedly, this year a lot of the vehicles at the bottom of the reliability scale are from American and Italian brands, with only a few surprises thrown in.Chevrolet TraverseRight off the bat, the Chevrolet Traverse earned its spot at number 10 on the list by offering poor reliability, but above-average owner satisfaction, it should be noted. You win some, you lose some.Chrysler PacificaNumber nine on the list is one of the few remaining Chrysler-branded vehicles the namesake OEM makes anymore, the Pacifica minivan. With a score of 16, the vehicle received a poor reliability rating and an average owner satisfaction rating.Tesla Model XThe Tesla Model X is next with a score of 15. Perhaps we should not be surprised by Tesla owners’ cult-like devotion to the brand, but despite this poor reliability, the Tesla somehow managed to garner an excellent rating in the Owner Satisfaction department. It’s not the first time we’ve seen this counterintuitive devotion from Tesla owners…Acura MDXOnly one Japanese vehicle made the list, the Acura MDX, with a score of 15. Reliability was found to be poor, and customer satisfaction was also below-average.Volkswagen Atlas and TiguanTwo Volkswagens made the list in the fifth and sixth spots, the Atlas and Tiguan. with a rating of 13 and 15 respectively. Both earned poor reliability scores, and only average owner satisfaction.Alfa Romeo GiuliaAlfa Romeo had to make the list, and it did it this time with the Giulia, and a score of 13. Owner satisfaction was above-average, but reliability was still poor.Jeep WranglerIf youre surprised at number three, you dont know anything about cars. Its the Jeep Wrangler, with a score of 12. Poor reliability ratings, but, again, still an above-average owner satisfaction rating.Chevrolet CamaroSecond from worst is the Chevrolet Camaro with a score of five. Poor reliability ratings didnt stop owners from giving it an excellent satisfaction rating, however. We have a hunch Camaro owners are probably more interested in performance than durability, anyway.Chevrolet ColoradoThe worst offender, according to Consumer Reports’ surveys, is the Chevrolet Colorado, with a reliablility score of just four. Not only was the truck unreliable, owners rated their satisfaction with the vehicle as

Thieves stealing Toyota, Lexus vehicles using key fob ‘relay’, police warn

2020 Lexus RX 450hHandout / Lexus Dozens of newer Toyota and Lexus vehicles are being stolen across Ontario with a simple trick that allows the thieves to just drive the vehicle away, CBC News reports. To steal the vehicles, the thieves use an amplifier to boost the signal of the cars key fob, assuming its within range of the vehicle. The signal is then captured, and the car can be driven without the fob nearby. More than 100 vehicles from across Canada have been stolen so far. While Toyota and Lexus vehicles seem to be targeted most often, its likely any vehicle with a key fob could be broken into using this system. Most of the stolen vehicles are destined for resale in Africa and the Middle East, explain authorities, which probably has more to do with why popular Toyota and Lexus vehicles are swiped most often.Toyota has suggested owners put their key fob in a Faraday pouch, which shields the device from radio signals. Some owners have also resorted to putting their fobs in the microwave or the freezer.Owners should also consider equipping more safeguards against the thefts, David Shum, Toyota spokesperson, said in an email to the CBC, such as an aftermarket alarm system, steering wheel lock and diagnostic-port lock. Also, if it doesnt go without saying, dont leave your key fob near the front door where thieves can easily steal the

5 Electric Vehicles for under $45K

Clockwise from top left: Chevrolet Bolt, Nissan Leaf, Hyundai Kona and Kia Niro.Handouts Its only been the last couple of years that putting together a list of five electric vehicles for under $45,000 was possible, and given the coming wave of new, affordable EVs on the horizon, a top-10 list will be do-able in the next two years or so.For now though, these five zero emission vehicles will have to do. But it should be noted that that price threshold of $45k is far from arbitrary, as that figure is the ceiling of a base priced model to qualify for a federal government rebate of $5,000 (and no, its not a coincidence the base prices of these five EVs are mere dollars, or in the case of the Tesla and Hyundai one loonie, below that threshold). B.C. and Quebec residents can further whittle down the MSRP with provincial incentives of $3,000 and $8,000 respectively. The Doug Ford government in July of last year canceled Ontarios EV rebate program. So, in no specific order, five EVs that the average family can afford.Tesla Model 3By far the best-selling EV in Canada so far in 2019 by June some 7,585 had been delivered to Canadians, compared to the second place Nissan Leaf (1,476) the Model 3 is a formidable contender and worthy of its top-selling crown. With a full-charge range between 350 and 500 kilometres (depending on the battery pack), over-the-air software upgrades and Teslas distinctive, yet spartan, exterior and interior design language, the technically advanced Model 3 exemplifies many of the best attributes of an electric vehicle. Then theres Teslas Supercharger network, which enables fast charging from coast-to-coast to the tune of up to 290 km of range is just 15 minutes. Using a Tesla 48A home wall connector charger, an hours charge provides about 70 kilometres of range. One caveat surrounding the Model 3, in fact regarding all Tesla models, is an increasing number of owner complaints about service. Specifically, how long somewhat routine repairs are taking and also the wait time for certain parts. To be sure these are, given the surge in Model 3 sales, growing pains as the company deals with a much larger footprint in Canadaparticularly in Vancouver, Toronto and Montreal. Base price (Standard Range): $44,999Nissan Leaf PlusNissan was at the forefront of the EV passenger vehicle revolution with the debut of the Leaf nearly 10 years ago, and in 2018 released the all-new, second-generation model, featuring new styling inside and out and a 40 kWh lithium-ion battery. For the model year 2019 Nissan upped the ante with the Plus model, its 62 kWh battery pack increasing the regular Leafs range by 50 per cent for an NRCan full-charge range of up to 363 kilometres. The Plus also has a more powerful motor (160 kW compared to 110 kW) that produces 45 per cent more power (214 horsepower) and a very respectable 250 lbs.-ft of torque. The second-gen Leaf benefits greatly from Nissans decade-long experience in the EV space, with advanced systems like the semi-autonomous ProPilot assist feature and the ePedal function that enables one-pedal driving perfectly suited for daily commutes in high-traffic urban centres. In terms of charging options, the Plus model offers the standard Level 1 and Level 2 ports, and adds a high output charge port (up to 100 kW) that provides an 80 per cent charge in just 45 minutes. And for those cold Canadian winters, heated seats, steering wheel and side mirrors come standard. Base Price (S Plus): $44,898Chevrolet BoltGM brought the Bolt to Canada in 2016 and set the new high-bar for range in an affordable EV with a full-charge range of 383 kilometres and a distinctively fun-to-drive personality. For 2020 theyve upped that very good range by some 10 per cent (417 km) without increasing the size or weight of the 66 kWh battery pack. That is thanks to a tweaked battery chemistry, but it does add 30 minutes to a full-charge session on a 240V system (10 hours) but improves on the DC Fast Charge time (160 km in 30 minutes). Apart from that range increase, the only real changes to the new Bolt are a textured front grille and bumper, and two new exterior colours (Cayenne Orange and Oasis Blue). One of the helpful features for Bolt owners is free access to the myChevrolet App2, with an Energy Assist function that allows you to view and search for charging stations, plan a trip with multiple waypoints and/or charging stops and receive alerts if the set route becomes invalid. A new feature of the app projects that Energy Assist screen to the Bolts infotainment system using Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. Base price: $44,998Kia NiroThe new-for-2019 Niro combines an all-electric powertrain with the popular crossover body style. Based on the gas-powered CUV of the same name, the front-wheel drive Niro EV features a liquid-cooled 64 kWh lithium-ion polymer battery with a full-charge range of 385 kilometres. Power output is 201 hp and 291 lbs.-ft of torque, and the standard DC Fast Charge

GM recalls more than 600,000 vehicles for unintended braking issue

2017 GMC Sierra HDGMC GM is recalling more than 600,000 vehicles worldwide for a software issue that can cause the brakes to activate on their own.The vehicles affected are four-wheel-drive trims of the 2014 through 2018 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra; and 2015 through 2020 Chevrolet Suburban, Tahoe and GMC Yukon models equipped with the 5.3-litre V-8 and a 3.08 rear axle ratio. The issue involves the programming of the system designed to stop the wheel speeds from varying significantly. The wheel speed sensor can fail, causing the opposite side wheel to brake, pulling the vehicle to one side and increasing the risk of a crash.Vehicles with the problem will be inspected, and have their Electronic-Brake Control Module updated. No accidents have been reported yet, but the problem is potentially deadly as it involves the braking system.GM says the risk can be eliminated by driving in two-wheel-drive mode until its brought into a dealership to be fixed properly. Some 653,370 vehicles are affected worldwide. GM has not provided the NHTSA with a timeline for providing the updated software to notifying owners or dealerships, but that information should be coming shortly. To see if your vehicle is affected, visit the Chevrolet recall centre

Troubleshooter: Yes, electric vehicles still need maintenance

A Tesla Model S in a service garage bay.Tesla No doubt one of the big selling points of EVs (electric vehicles) is their reduced maintenance requirements. Of course, thats seldom what you hear on the showroom floor. Instead, that might get exaggerated so you hear no maintenance needed! from some less-than-stellar sales reps. But while its true EVs dont require oil or coolant changes or spark plug replacements, they do have systems that need to be inspected and maintained on a regular basis. And, yes, the costs of operation (including electricity rates) are a fraction of a traditional combustion engine vehicles.Nissan recommends a 12,000-km service interval with two basic menus for its all-electric Leaf. At the first 12,000-km mark (and for every 24,000 km after that) its simply a tire rotation and visual inspection of axles, suspension components, brakes and steering mechanisms. The idea here is theres no mandatory replacement of anything, its all based on the cars condition. This way, someone whos relatively easy on their ride will pay less than someone who drives it like its a rental. As many EVs serve as second household vehicles and dont necessarily accumulate a lot of mileage, having an annual check-up (even though less than 12,000 km may have been travelled) is a wise idea. This service at a dealership should cost less than $100, but prices may vary, as they say.At the 24,000-km mark, Nissan lists the same tire rotation and inspection but also includes brake fluid replacement, EV battery usage report, cabin filter replacement and a check on reduction gear oil level and condition. Dealership service departments will charge on average between $150 and $250 for this checkup. The Tesla programTesla is a little more lenient in its maintenance requirements, with tire inspections every 16,000 km to 20,000 km and rotations or alignments based on tire wear and condition. Cabin filters are to be replaced every two years, and HEPA filters every three years. Air filter replacement needs are dictated solely by the environment you drive in. If you regularly use unpaved roads, or are stuck driving through construction zones, the dust thats kicked up may require more frequent filter replacement. In these cases youd be wise to familiarize yourself with how to access and check these items. For those vehicles running in cold weather conditions, like say, Canada, Tesla recommends annual brake inspections with cleaning and lubricant services. As the braking systems on EVs (and hybrids, too) incorporate electrical generators, keeping them in tip-top condition is important. A Tesla car arrives at a service center in Los Angeles, California on March 4, 2019. Mark Ralston / Getty via AP As with Nissan, Tesla recommends inspecting brake fluid for contamination every two years but only replacing it if needed. Condensation is the culprit theyre looking for, and left unchecked it can cause corrosion on metal components of the brakes hydraulic system. One unique kink to Teslas maintenance guide is the requirement to replace a desiccant unit in the vehicles air conditioning system. Also known as a receiver-drier, it helps to remove condensation from the system, keeping valves moving. When you go through these lists, youll notice many of the items are relatively easy DIY affairs for even the most technically challenged. Do a few of these yourself, and you can really earn bragging rights at the water-cooler who-has-the-lowest-auto-costs

BMW, Rolls and Toyota Supra backup camera recall impacts 250,000 new vehicles

2020 Toyota SupraHandout / Toyota BMW is recalling more than a quarter of a million cars in North America for a software glitch that may prevent the backup camera feed from displaying when the car is put in reverse. There may be up to 51 affected BMW-built models stretching back to model year 2020, including the 2018 Rolls-Royce Phantom and 2019 Cullinan SUV; the 2020 Toyota Supra and twin BMW Z4; and various trims of the BMW 3 Series, 5 Series, 6 Series, 7 Series and 8 Series from 2018 to 2020, including some M performance and xDrive variants. The model year 2018 thru 2020 BMW X3 SUV is also affected, as is the 2019 and 2020 BMW X4, X5, X6 and X7 SUV. Adjusting the back-up camera display settings in some of these vehicles will render the rearview image no longer visible, and it may keep that setting the next time the car is put into reverse, too. Owners of affected vehicles will be notified beginning in November, and dealers will update the cars software.Nissan and Infiniti recently recalled more than 1.2 million vehicles for a similar

BMW i1 will be the first in a lineup of new electric vehicles

BMW plans to kick off an electric car revolution with a brand-new i1, with a more conventional appearance than the space-age i3, says a new report.According to Auto Express, 12 fully electric cars and 13 plug-in hybrids will be making their way to BMW showrooms within the next four years. The first of the breed will be the i1, followed by the iX3 SUV and the fully electric i4.Robert Irlinger, head of BMWs i Division, says the electric platform that underpins its front-wheel-drive cars can be adapted to almost any vehicle the customer wants. Whatever they demand, they can get a plug-in hybrid X3, a fully-electric 4 Series, too. Thats a big step and a big change in our strategy. This means that essentially any BMW could be made electric, and in configurations such as front-wheel-drive, rear-wheel-drive with electric front assist (so, all-wheel drive) as well as obviously fully electric and hybrid. To give you an idea of the styling on the i1, Auto Express suggests itll likely look like a 1 Series with the kidney grilles censored by that, we mean BMWll put a honking black rectangle across the front of them. Presumably, itll fit some piece of safety tech or a bumper there or something. The rest of the vehicle should look like a conventional hatch, which should make it a hit with buyers.Expect to see this electric 1 Series within two years, with the other models to follow

Road restrictions for military-type vehicles: Quebec is backing off

It came last month in the form of a letter sent by Société de l’assurance automobile du Québec (SAAQ) to 550 owners of original Hummers, Bombardier Iltis, Steyr-Puch Pinzgauers and Mercedes-Benz Unimogs:Because those military-type vehicles are designed as Quebec alleges as off-road vehicles, they dont comply with the Highway Safety Code, therefore they could no longer get a regular Je me Souviens registration. That affects recent model-year military-type vehicles, but also those with an antique status (15 years or older, in Quebec).Rather, those military-type vehicles would have to wear the C plate, meaning they would not be allowed anymore on:Quebec roads with a speed limit higher than 70 km/h; All Quebec highways, no matter the speed limit. Basically, the military-type vehicles wouldnt be allowed on almost all provincial roads. And they wouldnt be authorized on Autoroute 520 Cte-de-Liesse and Autoroute 15 Decarie in Montreal, nor on Autoroute 740 Robert-Bourassa in Quebec City suburbs, simply because these are considered highways even with their posted speed limit below 70 km/h.They were going to be totally banned…If Quebec was to rule this way, it would be the only Canadian province with such restrictions for military-type vehicles. But it could have been worse: The actual Quebec Highway Safety Code (article 21) forbids anybody from putting a vehicle into operation on a public highway () if it has been restricted to off-highway use by its manufacturer or importer. This provision was going to be enforced as a total ban on military-type vehicles from La Belle Provinces roads, but the Ministre des Transports du Qubec ushered in, by mid-July, a semi-less-dramatic arrêté ministériel, to be enforced this past 22nd of August. The news was brought to military-type vehicles owners by official SAAQ letters they received between mid-August to end of August. The communication, for which Driving.ca was able to get a copy, stated this: Upon verification, we received confirmations that their manufacturer, or importer, has restricted the use of these (military-type vehicles) for off-road use. Then: We invite you to visit one of our service points to get a new license plate and a new registration certificate. () We remind you that it is forbidden to drive with () and that you could, according to the Highway Safety Code, be liable to fines.Cost of those fines: $200-$300 plus fees (no demerit point).550 owners or… 3000?The (first) problem is, theres six times more military-type vehicles licensed in Quebec than what the government estimates, assesses Philippe Raymond, who is trying, with his fellow members from the Club Véhicules Militaires du Québec, to defuse the bomb. Why such a gap with official numbers?Because the SAAQs data base doesnt have a checkbox for military vehicles, says Raymond. And Ive been told that when they searched with keywords Jeep for the Willys and Dodge for the M37, they got all those other models Grand Cherokee, Wrangler, Caravan, Ram So they excluded Jeep and Dodge. For now.The second problem? As you can imagine, when 550 or 3000 people are told they cant drive their passion as freely as before, you see them stepping to the barricades. In our research for this story, we learned that some are daily commuting with their military-type vehicle to work or to pick up the kids at school. Some use them as emergency vehicles to help in natural disasters or search and rescue operations, as seen on this Amateur Radio Operator Bernard Giguère’s Facebook Page.Others are driving them to the campground or the chalet, on roads that my Mazda3 wouldnt be able to overcome, says Philippe Raymond.Ultimately, this resident of La Capitale Nationale, owner of a 1990 Humvee and a 1985 Bombardier Iltis (bought directly from the neighbouring Canadian Forces Base ValCartier), is planning a back-and-forth trip across Canada with his 4 teenagers next summer. But: If things stay as they are, it means I wont have a problem driving across the country but Ill have one when leaving Quebec!Stepping to the barricadesSo, those military-type vehicles owners are stepping to the barricades, especially since the Transport Quebec Minister, Franois Bonnardel, declared that the decision came after suppliers informed his government of potential dangers with these vehicles, in the event of an accident. Not true, maintain the owners interviewed by Driving.ca who, incidentally, are in constant communications with AM General and other military-vehicle manufacturers and distributors:Forget about that, Militaires are known to never give any information! blurts Vincent Simard, who owns a military-vehicles restoration shop in Lévis.Philippe Raymond confirms: I contacted the worlds three largest vehicle manufacturers. The three provided me with official documents from their engineering department stating that their vehicles were designed to run on any type of road and highway, but they have off-road capabilities adapted to military requirements. In
