If youre planning to be anywhere this weekend, make it the capital of cool on the South Saskatchewan River.Saskatoons classic rock outdoor concert series and car-show extravaganza returns for its 37th edition this Friday through Sunday. Tickets for Rock the River 2019 have long since sold out, as they do every year. But owners of pre-1999 vehicles in show-ready condition still have time to join the more than 40,000 locals and tourists wholl take over 14 downtown blocks, where up to 1,000 classic cars, trucks and motorcycles will park for the car-show portion of the Rock 102 Show and Shine Western Canadas largest auto-themed street party. It started from very humble beginnings and has just blossomed into this massive event, says Brent Loucks, morning man at Rock 102s sister station CKOM since 1984.Not only because of everyones love for these cars, but because of the timing: were wrapping up another summer, so this a great social event tying in music and cars that everyone in the community can relate to. Were all getting together to celebrate here in one of the greatest cities in Canada. Whereas the AW, Burger Baron and Dog and Suds were once the prime car-spotting locations on Saskatoon’s Cruise Night, now, it’s the Dairy Queen. Or wherever you can park a lawn chair. Sarah Staples Loucks was at the first edition of the Show and Shine, in 1982, when owners of a dozen classic cars decided to get together by the AW on 8th Street East, Saskatoons major east-west thoroughfare. It started relatively innocently as a radio station promotion, Loucks continues.Wed play old music, there was a hula-hoop contest, people were dressing in 50s and 60s outfits, listening to retro music, and it was just a fun thing to do in the evening; then, more car clubs joined in and the classic car side kept growing every year. 1965 Corvette Stingray of Leonard Mazzei, of Eston, SK, at the city’s 2018 Show and Shine Sarah Staples This Saturday evening, vintage cars will again head to 8th Street East to loop around the long, wide boulevard, over and over. Some owners park and make it a tailgate party, opening their hoods to spectators of all ages who line the impromptu parade route.Parking lots are full all up and down the street, people are sitting on bus benches, lawn chairs, bleachers that are set up, says Neil Schneider, marketing manager at Wyant Group Raceway, which has organized its own events over the weekend for the past decade.8th Street was the original home of Saskatoons stock-car paved motordrome, the 8th Street Racing Oval, before it moved north of the city in 2006 and was renamed Wyant Group Raceway. Its one of only two tracks in Western Canada to host Pintys NASCAR Canada racing and is Canadas only volunteer-run racetrack, managed and staffed entirely by members of the Saskatoon Stock Car Racing Association Ltd. (SSCRA).This weekend there will be local Pro Trucks, Bandaleros (kids 8-16) and Mini Stocks (compact cars) competing, along with Baby Grands and Mini Cups series hosted from Alberta. And over at the Saskatchewan International Raceway, the citys drag strip will host Jet Cars racing.Every year, from the public and from the club, the response is getting bigger and bigger, says Schneider. Theres non-race fans, race-fans, families, just anyone curious to see these cars. (Tourist tip: for four Sundays every year, the track opens to anyone who’s keen to get behind the wheel of a stock car; the next Dakota Dunes Race Experience, monitored by qualified pro drivers, is Sept 8.)The radio station also organizes a Poker Run: participants drive classic cars to five different spots around Saskatoon, drawing a single card at each location, then meet up to determine who has the prize-winning poker hand.Theres a definite vintage feel to the entire weekend. It reminds me of the movie American Graffiti. You get really nostalgic seeing the old muscle cars, hearing the squeal of tires, explains Schneider. Its a feeling of parents being able to be kids again.Rock the Rivers concert series spotlights many classic Canadian bands, too. Loverboy, Platinum Blonde, The Headpins and Chilliwack will take to the main stage this weekend, by The Delta Bessborough hotel. Motorcycles are welcome at Saskatoon’s biggest car show. Sarah Staples Last year, I ran into Kim Mitchell sauntering out of an elevator at The Bessborough. His trademark blond mane had gone the way of those MTV-era pink pants, but bald or no, Mitchell still had it that recognizably Canadian, indescribably Rush-era something special. The iconic rocker disappeared from the iconic Canadian National Railway hotel before I could say, Hell yeah, go for that soda, Kim.While youre at it, Rock on, Saskatoon. You see families where grandparents used to cruise 8th Street 30 years ago, and now its their children or grandchildren bringing that same car that theyve inherited, or building their own, Loucks says. It goes to show how many people in this world love cars and

Eclectic weekend for carnuts in B.C.
Boxy and beautiful, this 1967 Plymouth GTX with a four-speed was seen at the Langley Good Times Cruise-In last weekend.Cam Hutchins This weekend has a very eclectic range of events that includes racing, swap meets, car shows and even a couple of toy runs. The must attend in my mind is at Mission Raceway tomorrow, with road racing all day then crazy nighttime drags in the evening. You could even do the toy run in the morning and then head to the trackIf you have never been to the track, or you have not been to the track this year, this is the day to go. The Confederation of Autosport Car Clubs puts on a really great day of road racing with all sorts of cars from Formula Fords to Miatas, Mustangs, RX7s, Lotus, CRXs, Civics and even purpose-built NASCAR type racecars. There is something for everyone, as some of the cars look completely stock, just like the ones you remember driving beside you in rush hour. Then if the day cant get better, stick around for the night races on the drag strip. Not many stock-looking cars on this track, but lots of muscle. And noise! I have not been to a night drag in a long time so am really looking forward to it. Longtime friend Bert Worrall will be checking out his new rear-end set-up on his crowd-pleasing Orange Dodge Dart.Sunday start at the Model A Swap meet to get some parts or ideas for your next build, then head to The Greater Vancouver Street Machines Car Club Car show at the Jolly Mac Pub in North Surrey. The car show is always good and so is the food.Street machines or BMWs? The BMW Car Club is hosting a car show in North Van so if you dont want to drive to the suburbs check out the Bimmers on the lawn at Waterfront Park.Somewhere that did not have a lot of BMWs was last weekends Langley Good Times Cruise in Aldergrove. But there were well over 1,000 cars that were displayed along Fraser Highway from 264th to 272th. Eight amazing blocks of awesome cars lined either side of the highway and even some in the middle of the road.My parents drove a full-sized station wagon with a 429 so I have a soft spot for the big block Fords and one car at the show grabbed me and will stay in my heart forever. A 1971 Ford Torino with a shaker hood scoop, rear window louvers and a four-speed manual transmission! The other car that caught my eye was the 1976 Chevy Nova SS with you guessed ita manual transmission. Probably a four-speed but may have been a five. And so not to leave the other member of the Big Three out, there was a very nice 1967 Plymouth GTX, the epitome of in the box styling. It was like taking a block of clay, removing the material above the hood and trunk and calling it a design. The very boxy 1967 GTX seemed to be so far away from the sexy models Mopar would turn out in the next few years but this is one sexy beast. White with very understated red stripe and a pair of little tiny hood scoops this car was just perfect. It was good to see lots of kids enjoying the show and lets keep this rolling by taking a kid to a show this weekend. Beautiful cars and well-dress admirers are the order of the day at the 10th annual Luxury Supercar Weekend at VanDusen Botanical Garden in Vancouver.Postmedia VANCOUVER The kids are back to school, the white shoes are put away for another season and Canucks training camp is just around the corner. All of which means its time once again for VanDusen Botanical Gardens to be transformed into the greatest outdoor car lot imaginable. The 10th annual Luxury Supercar Weekend takes place tomorrow and Sunday and as usual is offering up a mouth-watering display of supercars, luxury cars and even a few classics for the discerningand typically well-dressedshowgoers. Theres also a live supercar auction operated by Adesa and great food and beverages available throughout the garden grounds. As has been the case since show founder/organizer Craig Stowe brought his dream of a highend car show to Vancouver a decade ago, this years event offers a new twist: an airplane. Here are four reasons to visit this years show (but trust me there are many more): The ICON 5 recreational airplane will share lawn space with the usual array of mouth-watering supercars and luxury cars. ICON ICON A5Recreational aviation has taken a great leap forward with this U.S.-built amphibious light-sport aircraft. A concept aircraft was first flown in 2008, and creation of the production tooling began in December 2012. Its designengine in back, low instrument panel and panoramic canopyprovides unique views for the pilot and passenger. It has folding wings, a spin-resistant airframe, an onboard parachute system, a range of 427 nautical miles and a maximum speed of 176 km/h. Price: US$389,000. Pininfarina Battista File photo PININFARINA BATTISTAThe Pininfarina Battista is an electric sports car manufactured by Munich-based Automobili Pininfarina with roots in the Italian car design firm and coachbuilder Pininfarina SpA. The name Battista is a tribute to Pininfarinas founder Battista Farina. Unveiled earlier this year at the Geneva Motor Show, the two-door coupe is powered by a 120 kWh battery pack that sends power to four motors at each wheel to produce a monstrous 1,877 horsepower and 1,696 lbs.-ft of torque. It has a carbon fibre monocoque chassis, boasts 21-inch wheels, and a reported full-charge range of 451 kilometres. Pagani Huayra BC Pagani 2020 PAGANI HUAYRA BC ROADSTERWith a sticker price of US$3.4 million, this street-legal hypercar isnt for the light of wallet or shy of attention. Big city and small town shows across B.C. this weekend
Two of the spectacular classics that will be at the Crescent Beach Concours dElegance on Aug. 31st: Ethan and Troy Coopers Riley, left, and Gerry Sungs Intermeccanica Italia. Sung is joined by Dave Sanderson.Cam Hutchins Im going to miss some great events this weekend, but that doesnt mean you have to. There are great downtown shows in Ladner and Port Coquitlam, the Early Ford V8 Club sets up at Hougen Park in Abbotsford and the annual BurnOuts in the Sky Bradley McPherson Memorial Show Shine takes place tomorrow at the Twilight Drive-In in Aldergrove.Of course, its not like Im going to be car-starved as Im in covering Car Week in Carmel, California for the National Association of Automobile Clubs of Canada. That includes attending the Pebble Beach Concours dElegance, the Concorso Italiano, and the historic racing at Weathertech Raceway Laguna Seca. The annual BurnOuts in the Sky Bradley McPherson Memorial Show Shine takes place tomorrow at theTwilight Drive Inn in Aldergrove. PNG Files I got a little preview of that kind of racing last weekend during the British Columbia Historic Motor Races at Mission Raceway Park, and it brought back memories of my Westwood days shooting in the rain. Saturday midmorning the skies opened up, and considering the downpour I was impressed that not many cars spun out. Clearly a testament to the mad skills of the drivers in their precious old tin.. One of the older Camaros got into wet part of the drying track coming out of turn one and certainly showed us what racing in the rain is all about. Rain or shine, historic racing is great. My weekend actually started at 7 a.m. on Friday morning with a photo shoot of two cars for the cover of the Crescent Beach Concours dElegance program. This annual fundraising showB.C. Childrens Hospital Foundationtakes place on the Saturday of the Labour Day weekend at Blackie Spit in Crescent Beach. One of the two cars was a Riley, and really the only thing I knew about Rileys is that my dad had a framed print of which I now have. Turns out Riley started as a bicycle manufacturer in the 1890s before building cars and merging with larger companies. In 1952 it became part of British Motor Corporation and was shuttered in the late-Sixties after being reduced to making rebadged Austins. The other car looked familiar and when I asked if it was an Apollo GT convertible, I was told it was an Italia. Both made by Vancouver-based Intermeccanica. The company was the brainchild of Frank Reisner, a Hungarian-born engineer who was living in Canada and moved to Europe to build sports cars in the late-Fifties. After some success and some struggles he eventually moved to Vancouver and produced very high quality Porsche speedsters for decades. Franks son Henry is still making those, along with Solo electric vehicles under the Meccanica banner.Henry has been involved in cars since he was a kid and now he runs the car company, so remember to take a kid with you to a show this weekend.SH0WSAUG. 16Date: Aug 16What: Friday Night Rod RunWhere: Starts at AW Restaurant at Ivy Green Husky, proceeds through downtown Ladysmith and returns to AWWhen: 5 p.m. to 9 p.m.Info: 250-246-0637, 250-245-2263 or duckwon@shaw.caWebsite: ladysmithshowandshine.comAUG. 17What: BurnOuts in the Sky Bradley McPherson Memorial Show ShineWhere: Twilight Drive Inn, 3360 260th St., AldergroveWhen: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.Admission: $5; Children under 11 freeRegistration: 8 a.m. $20 and open to all vehicles, including motorcyclesInfo: 604-360-7455 or burnoutsinthesky@gmail.comWebsite: burnoutsinthesky.comWhat: Ladysmith Show ShineWhere: Downtown LadysmithWhen: 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.Registration: 8 a.m. $15 and open to all vehiclesInfo: 250-246-0637, 250-245 2263 or duckwon@shaw.caWebsite: ladysmithshowandshine.comWhat: Rods Rails Car ShowWhen: 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.Where: Pleasant Valley Boulevard, Downtown ArmstrongAdmission: FreeRegistration: 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. Open to all vehiclesInfo: cmelanson@shuswapins.com or 250 838 7707What: Beverly Corners Show ShineWhere: Cobble Hill Country Grocer, 5847 Chesterfield Ave., DuncanWhen: 5:30 p.m. to 9 p.m.Admission: Free (donations accepted)Info: 250-748-1314 or info@beverlycornersshownshine.comAUG. 17-18What: Downtown PoCo Cruise Car ShowWhere: Downtown Port CoquitlamWhen: Saturday cruise starts at 6 p.m. at Leigh Square; Sunday show 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.Admission: FreeInfo: 604-674-2899 or info@pococarshow.caWebsite: pococarshow.caAUG. 18What: Hougen Park Show ShineWhere: Hougen Park, AbbotsfordWhen: 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.Admission: FreeRegistration: 9 a.m. $15 and open to all vehiclesInfo: 604-942-5651, questions@earlyfordv8bc.com, oldcars@telus.netWebsite: earlyfordv8bc.comWhat: Vintage in The Valley Vintage Motorcycle ShowWhere: Chilliwack Heritage Park, 44140 Luckakuck Way, ChilliwackWhen: 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.Admission: Adults $10; Children under 16 freeRegistration: By donationInfo: 778 242 7104 or wallylevy@hotmail.caWebsite: vintagemotorcycleshows.comWhat:

Local artist Jody Wilson shows his mad skills with another cool build. It’s Go Time is a 1955 Chevy Gasser that is over the top awesome.Cam Hutchins Everything is coming up threes this long weekend. There are three great car shows in the Lower Mainland, three on the Island and three in the Interior . Toss in some racing and even a tractor pull, and it truly is a carnuts full pull holiday weekend. That, of course, is a term that comes from tractor pulling, and after 15 years away the Campbell family is bringing it back to Agrifair Saturday through Monday. Come by at noon each day to meet the driver, and dont forget to bring some really good ear protection along too!Ill be there one of those days, and I also plan to log some good kilometres checking out the Old Time drags, WestCoasters Daze, the Shelby show at Hallmark Ford, and if I can squeeze it in, the Sun Festival in Tsawwassen. So many shows, so little time. Bill and Joan Ronald’s 1967 Camaro RS SS 350 that was sold new in Georgia. Cam Hutchins Last Saturday I spent the day at Mission Raceway Park track for a very fun day of action celebrating a quarter-century of road racing at the Rivers Edge circuit. One of the highlights was the Formula Ford action, with more than a dozen beautiful Van Diemen open-wheel racecars going head to head.On Sunday I was at the car show at Tsawwassen Mills that saw more than 500 cars on display. So many cool cars to see, chief among them Bill and Joan Ronalds stellar Mountain Green 1967 Camaro that was sold new in Georgia. Talented local artist Jody Wilson was showing off his 1955 Chevy Gasser dubbed Its Go Time, featuring a straight axle, flip hood dual quads and tons of attitude. This beast makes it debut on the track this weekend at the Langley Loafers Old Time drags. And then there was Mike Learys 1934 Ford Roadster, a car that won best hot rod at the show and one that Ive been watching come together online. So no matter where you are this weekend have fun and remember long weekends allow you to go to more car shows with a kid.SHOWSAUG. 3-4What: The Van Isle Shriners Show ShineWhere: ParksvilleWhen: Saturday Cruise starts a 5 p.m. from Wembley Mall. Big weekend of celebrating classics
The Chi-Town Hustler is one of the most iconic Funny Cars from the Seventies and is one of the highlights of the LeMay Collection in Tacoma, Washington.Cam Hutchins This weekend underscores that July is Collector Car Appreciation Month in B.C. The official designation is pretty much Canada wide, and with all the grants going to those buying electric vehicles, its nice to see some support for the collector car culture. The old car hobby is a big deal in Canada and we certainly love our old cars in this province.ICBCs collector plate program has certainly allowed for a lot of older cars to still get used for a reasonable cost, and the care, maintenance and restoration of these old cars is a big business and contributes quite a lot to our economy. Certainly, joining a car club allows you to benefit from all the collective knowledge about your car, but also allows you to meet like-minded carnuts.I probably wont do any car events this weekends as Im travelling across three provinces to visit our son in Saskatchewan. I wont be seeing any Mustangs, Tigers or Barracudas, but I am hoping to see some Bears and Buffalo in Jasper.Last weekend I did see some Mustangs; in fact the mother of all Mustangs to be exact. We went a few hours south of Vancouver to Americas Car Museum in Tacoma, Wash. to see the actual 1968 Mustang used in the 1968 movie Bullitt. This car was actually driven by Steve McQueen in the movie and the sound of him double clutching the big block Ford 390 converted more people into carnuts than any other sound before or since. This car is unrestored and still shows the square tubes under the rockers that were used to mount the camera gear used to capture the iconic car chase sequence. Cam’s younger brother Jeff with the mother of all Mustangs, one of the movie cars used in the long chase scene in Bullitt starring Steve McQueen. Cam Hutchins The museumalso known as the LeMay is well worth the trip. In addition to great collection of cars, there is all sorts of auto-related memorabilia and a huge slot car track.A highlight for me was the actual Chi Town Hustler, a 1972 Dodge Challenger that ran a best ET of 6.56 seconds at 218.97 mph back in the day. Also, one of its three drivers, Pat Minick, invented the long smoky burnout that has become such an iconic part of drag racing.Another standout was the 1960 Rambler station wagon that won the Ridler Award at the 2008 Detroit Autorama. The reason a Rambler wagon won one of the biggest awards in the car hobby is that it has a Ferrari 360 Modena drivetrain behind the drivers seat and a front end modeled after the early-60s Ferrari Lusso! But this weekend there are lots of reasons to stay in our beautiful , from way up north in Dawson Creek to eight events and two races on Vancouver Island. A highly modified Corvette dragster takes off at Mission Raceway Park on June 30, the 66th anniversary of the first Vette to roll off the assembly line in Flint, Michigan.Cam Hutchins After last weekends Canada Day blitz of car events across the province, youd think things might slow down for this weekend, but thanks to the strong and wide carnut culture in B.C., there are plenty of shows to attend and races to watch today through Sunday. As a member both the B.C. Vintage Truck Museum and the B.C. Hot Rod Association Im really excited about their combined shows this year at the Casino in Cloverdale on Saturday. Unfortunately, that means Ill miss the vintage races in Seattle. Maybe next year.Last Saturday I went to the Doorwarz drag races in Mission and got some great shots of the cars that somewhat resemble what rolled out of the factory. But when the front wheels go high in the air you know they are a long way away from the production line. On Canada Day I was up early for an 8 a.m. photo shoot at the Jellybean Autocrafters show roll-in. As always, a stellar collection of classics, particularly the 1959-61 Impalas that I am always partial to. The Cougar club all came in together and while Gordy Korupchuks cool car wasnt the only one to overheat, he at least had an excuse, as it is a fresh engine of a fresh build. Luckily the road is sloped so he could coast much of the way in.But no coasting this weekend as there are 21 car events/races to get to. And dont forget to take a kid along with you. Not only does that continue the car culture in our province, it also provides you with some extra pushing power in case your car overheats.SHOWSJULY 6What: BCHRA Hot Rod Saturday B.C. Prepare yourselves for traffic hell in Toronto this weekend
Traffic along King St. W., at Simcoe St. in downtown Toronto.Ernest Doroszuk You know summer is almost here when it becomes impossible to navigate Toronto by car. For the people who live here, that’s not such a bad thing. Neighbourhoods are meant to be people friendly, and cars most decidedly are not. Look for parts of Kensington Ave, Augusta Ave and Baldwin St in the Kensington Market to be closed on Sunday from noon until 10:30pm, part of the ongoing Kensington Market’s Pedestrian Sundays; the next one is June 30. With the Raptors returned to town for Game 5 against Milwaukee, Bremner Blvd and Lakeshore Road West to east of 25 York will be closed for a tailgate party on Saturday from 7 a.m. until midnight. And it’s a Jays afternoon game both Saturday and Sunday, so there will be thousands of extra cars roaming around the downtown core hopelessly searching for cheaper parking. Toughest for out-of-towners will no doubt be the maintenance closure of the Don Valley Parkway at 12:01 a.m. Sunday until 5 a.m. Monday. Double check subway lines for hiccups there, too. Originally scheduled to close for the entire weekend, expected rain on Saturday hampered resurfacing efforts. Toronto Island is battling its own woes, with ankle-deep water flooding much of the area. Recreation plans should be delayed while residents battle the encroaching Lake

Car shows and racing events across B.C. this weekend
The 1933 Ford Tudor Sedan owned by Richard Hicks and Wes Bakers 1929 Ford Model A at last weekends Langleys Cars and Crafts.Cam Hutchins VANCOUVER — I only attended one car show last weekend, but it was for a good cause and I had a chance to spend lots of time speaking with many cool car owners. One of those was a 2007 GT 500 Super Snake at the Cars and Crafts Show in Langley. The GT 500 Super Snake is the result of Shelby American in Las Vegas, which added optional performance equipment to the Ford factory Shelby GT 500. As coincidence would have it I went to the Shelby Museum and factory in 2008 when this Super Snake was being created. This Super Snake churned almost 800 horsepower on the Mopac dyno and runs over 140 m.p.h. in the quarter mile. The owner showed me the Shelby American-added driver’s side mirror warning “Objects in Mirror are losing”. This car is audacious and earns a special spot in my heart. Another audacious beast at the show was a 1956 Packard Patrician with the push-button automatic transmission. This giant four-door car was the last model built by Packard before their “merging of equals” with Studebaker left them both crumbling. The car was restored many years ago and is longingly looked after by its present owners who drive it sparingly and respectively. One thing this car needs is the ring that fastens the engine ignition switch. It is broken and the couple he found on online are unsuitable. Any Packard fans out there with this little piece gathering dust? Readers know that I am a huge fan of British cars. I grew up with them, and even though the industry fell on hard times throughout the 70’s there are still so many great cars of interest. During the 50’s and early 60’s the mix of cars in Vancouver were almost 50 per cent of British decent. And as always, if you attend tomorrow’s All-British Field meet at VanDusen Gardens, you’ll see a huge a variety of British cars, from quirky little Mini Moogs to graceful old Rolls-Royces that still get regularly driven. Almost every British car has a passionate group of fans keeping their beloved cars alive. Which ever event you get to this long weekend, make sure you bring a kid along for the ride! Driving.ca Collector Classics columnist Alyn Edwards rolls into the DW Poppy high school show in his sweet Avanti last weekend.Cam Hutchins By Cam Hutchins VANCOUVER—Last Friday evening started with a bit of a history lesson out here on the West Coast. Fifteen ounces of history to be exact. The ’15 oz. Fuel Coupe’ is a 1934 5-window Ford coupe that was first built as a hot rod in the Fifites and then very successfully raced in the Sixties before going into hibernation. And last weekend it turned up here in the Lower Mainland with it’s latest caretaker, Ross Galitzky. The nitro-burning Hemi was the highlight of cruise night at the Tim Hortons on 192nd Street in Surrey. This treasured piece of hot-rodding history showed up on a trailer, and despite being parked on a side street, with it’s severely chopped roof and buckets of patina, it was still the belle of the show.’ Another cool ride delegated to the side street was a white 1967 Impala owned by Todd Leslie for decades. The side streets were packed and the main lot was stuffed with tons of cool old tin of all types and it was good to see lots of families walking around with the kids checking in the cars. There were also lots of kids at the DW Poppy high school show on Sunday. Also there was my favourite father-and-son team with their 1949 Ford Anglia dubbed The Rising Sun.’ Doug Cockburn bought it in 1965 and by 1973 the finished car was racing at the old Mission Raceway Drag strip. When that track closed he converted it to a street rod that today is regularly driven by son Dave Pick. The Poppy field was packed by the time I got there around 7:15 a.m., and all told there were over 700 vehicles to take in. One cool 1968 Camaro was painted gold with white stripes and features all the modern drivetrain goodies. That paint job is a tribute to owner Marsha Seekins’ alma mater, Georgia Tech and the Yellow Jackets.’ Carl Jamieson showed up in his 1963 Nova convertible that has always been one of my favourite cars since I first saw it more than 15 years ago. It was dwarfed by another cool ride parked nearby; a 1966 Ford Galaxie 7-litre owned by John Hood. Ford’s use of “Litre” size in the Sixties must have been a form of bragging as the European cars often used their engine size in the names of their cars. Alfa Romeo 2000 Spider’s 2.0-litre seems a bit wimpy compared to seven litres. Another of the Litre’ cars was a Cougar 6.5 Litre. But as always at Poppy it was cubic inches. For instance, Bill Ronalds’ 1969 Cougar with the 428 Cobra jet. A silver Impala with blue insert also caught my attention. Turns out owner Bob Mundie found this 1961 Chevy Impala in Alberta a few years a go, and after a few upgrades he drives it everywhere. One car I did not recognize was the little red Model T with the Scallop’ paint job. Previously it had been shown in white primer and was just recently painted by it’s owner Mario Raymond. Not only did he paint it at home; he built this little non-chopped T himself with help of his family. Sunday is Mother’s Day and the Kennedy Pub is stepping up to continue the Mother’s Day Car Show Tom the Tire Guy hosted for decades. On Saturday there are a couple of events worth checking out, including an open house at the Richmond works yard. If you’re in the valley, check out the kart races in the afternoon and then head out to Agassiz Speedway for the evening oval track racing. Cars and Crafts Langley is hosting a car show with all sorts of great stuff to buy for your Mom, and if you are in the Interior the White Post Auto Museum’s swap meet sounds like a winner of a place to find a gift for Mom too. So wherever you go this weekend take Mom along, so you can be the kid at a car show.
