In this March 15, 2017 file photo, a sign marks a pick-up point for the Uber car service at LaGuardia Airport in New York.Seth Wenig / Associated Press Uber found more than 3,000 allegations of sexual assaults involving drivers or passengers on its platform in the U.S. last year, part of an extensive and long-awaited review in response to public safety concerns. The ride-hailing company released an 84-page safety report Thursday, seeking to quantify the misconduct and deaths that occur on its system and argue that its service is safer than alternatives.U.S. customers took about 1.3 billion trips last year, Uber said. About 50 people have died in Uber collisions annually for the past two years, at a rate about half the national average for automotive fatalities, according to the company. Nine people were killed in physical assaults last year, Uber said.Uber drivers reported nearly as many allegations of sexual assault as passengers, who made 56 per cent of the claims. There is little comparable data on assaults in taxis or other transportation systems, and experts have said the attacks are widely under-reported. The assault claims reported to Uber ranged from unwanted kissing to forcible penetration. Uber is very much a reflection of society, said Tony West, Ubers chief legal officer who helped spearhead the two-year research effort. The sad, unfortunate fact is that sexual violence is more prevalent in our society than people think. People dont like to talk about this issue.Uber had committed more than a year ago to release a safety study, a promise Lyft Inc. made soon after. Lyft, the second-biggest ride-hailing provider in the U.S., has yet to publish a report. On Thursday, Uber said it would regularly share data with Lyft and other companies about drivers accused of serious safety lapses and continue publishing safety reports every two years.Uber has faced a steady stream of complaints in court across the country over driver misconduct, and Lyft has recently seen an explosion in legal claims by passengers. Just in California, at least 52 riders have sued Lyft this year over allegations they were assaulted or harassed by their drivers, according to filings reviewed by Bloomberg.Uber has faced similar complaints in countries beyond the U.S. The company was sued in 2017 by a woman who alleged top executives violated her privacy after one of its drivers in India allegedly raped her.Regulators in London cited uncertainty about Ubers ability to ensure the well-being of its passengers as a reason they revoked the companys license to operate there last week. Uber will be able to continue operating in the U.K. capital as it appeals the decision. Dara Khosrowshahi, the chief executive officer, said at an event earlier this week that a precursor to trust is transparency.According to the study, the proportion of assaults to total trips decreased by 16 per cent last year as Uber implemented new safety tools, such as contacting drivers and customers when the system identifies unusual activity, as well as adding a button to dial 9-1-1 from the app. I do think Uber is one of the safest ways to get from point A to point B, said West.Uber disclosed five categories of sexual assault allegations. In 2018, Uber received 1,560 reports of non-consensual touching of a sexual body part, 594 reports of non-consensual kissing of a non-sexual body part, 376 reports of non-consensual kissing of a sexual body part, 280 reports of attempted non-consensual sexual penetration and 235 reports of non-consensual sexual penetration. The extent of sexual misconduct, while staggering, isnt unique to Uber, said Ebony Tucker, executive director at Raliance, an advocacy and consulting firm focused on preventing sexual violence. Ubers findings didnt surprise any of us, she said. Sexual assault is pervasive. Its everywhere.Counting assaults is a complicated exercise. Only about a third of claims the company received about penetration without consent were reported to the police, Uber estimated. In about a quarter of cases, Uber said its team didnt successfully communicate with the victim after the initial report. Women reported 89 per cent of the rape allegations, the company said.Uber opted not to disclose many other troubling forms of sexual misconduct that it had previously identified as possible reporting categories. For instance, the company didnt say how many times drivers and riders made inappropriate comments to one another, nor did it disclose incidents of indecent

News Roundup: Tesla Cybertruck and Ford Mustang Mach-E vie for biggest EV reveal of the year
Welcome to our weekly roundup of the biggest breaking stories on Driving.ca from this past week. Get caught up and ready to get on with the weekend, because it’s hard keeping pace in a digital traffic jam. Here’s what you missed while you were away:Tesla reveals Cybertruck, breaks two windows in the processThe Cybertruck is here and it’s getting ALL the media attention. Price starts US$39,900, there are three range options (250 miles+, 300+ and 500+), and it’ll supposedly sprint to 96 km/h in just 2.9 seconds. But that’s not what people are talking about. Why? Because, well, just look at it! The polarizing design of the Cybertruck was actually eclipsed when a member of the reveal team, in an attempt to demonstrate the shatterproof-ness of the windows, accidentally shattered the two left-side windows with an iron ball. “Room for improvement,” said Elon. The Mach-E stole the LA Auto Show before the show had even started Ford Mustang Mach-E Nadine Filion In other major EV news this week, Ford pulled the sheets off its Mustang Mach-E SUV. David Booth rounded up the most important facts about the controversial “Mustang.” Did you know that it was originally supposed to be called just “Mach-e”? True story. But when designers wanted to spring on a new battery-powered platform, those with their fingers on the purse strings said they’d release the funds only if the Mustang label was involved. Find out what other secrets the new E-SUV holds right here. The Internet’s best reactions to the Mach-E arrival Ford Mustang Mach-E Nadine Filion As it is wont to do, the Internet voiced some strong opinions about the Ford Mach-E. One of the most controversial parts is right there in the name—and according to Driving.ca’s own poll, a full 72 per cent of readers believe that, now having seen it, the Mach-E is not worthy of the Mustang name. The public wasn’t the only source of concern over the name, either: Ford admitted at the launch that plenty of former Mustang designers refused to work on the project. One Twitter user got in on the joke by Photoshopping an image of the Carrol Shelby standing next to a black-and-white Mach-E. Ha! How Halifax Autoport processes almost 200,000 imported cars per year
Imported Volkswagens sit at Autoport, one of North Americas largest vehicle processing and trans-shipment facilities, in Eastern Passage, N.S. on Wednesday, Feb. 11, 2009.Andrew Vaughan / Canadian Press Its part of the automotive food chain that can remain invisible in other parts of the country. All those vehicles made in Europe and other countries across the pond have to be brought to North American in some manner.Cadillac used to fly the Allante convertible from Italy to America in custom Boeing 747 jumbo jets, for example, an outrageously expensive proposition that surely contributed to its sky-high price.Thats why the majority of the worlds automakers, even premium brands like BMW and Mercedes, ferry their cars to a destination by ship. Halifax Autoport plays regular host to these sea monsters, where a vast number of European machinery make their first turn of a wheel on North American soil. Autoport is one of the largest vehicle processing and shipment facilities, handling nearly 185,000 vehicles every year. Those jumbo jets deployed by Cadillac could carry 56 cars at a time. The enormous ocean carriers docking at Autoport, however, are much more commodious. Spanning in the vicinity of 200 metres from stem to stern, ships like the Asian Majesty and MSC Cristiana can deliver about 5,500 cars at a time to the shores of North America. The vessels are simultaneously cubist and grand, hauling their cargo like an automotive layer cake. With upwards of a dozen decks, a peek inside one of these roll-on/roll-off vessels will reveal cars packed cheek-to-jowl, parked inches apart and tied down securely. Its tighter than the Don Valley Parkway at rush hour during an autumn rain storm. Ships crew will often plan their seafaring routes around large storms to avoid damaging their cargo, keeping a window of time when they depart to allow for these potential delays without being late to their destination.Fun fact: most auto carriers, and other types of cargo ships, cap their width at about 32 metres. Why? Such girth allows them to traverse the Panama Canal. The ship shown here is the sixty-three thousand gross tonne Grande Halifax, built in 2018 at the Chinese shipyards of Jinling. It, too, has a length of 199.9 metres nearly two football fields and a width of 32.26 metres. Cruising speed is 19 knots or about 35km/h. The ship has a capacity of 6,700 CEU (Car Equivalent Units) or 4,000 linear metres of rolling freight and 2,500 CEUs. It is equipped with four hoistable decks which enable the transport of rolling cargo with a height of up to 5.2 metres. Despite all this capacity, the crew count is only 27.Once the vessels arrive at Autoport, the companys many employees working as drivers must physically get in the cars and drive them off the ship. This requires a dizzying amount of organization, as each brand has its own parking spot in one of Autoports massive marshalling yards. Parking a Land Rover in the BMW area would not be helpful. The yards occupy space on both sides of Nova Scotias busy Route 332, meaning drivers must navigate across a public road or two in order for the vehicle to reach its correct spot. Once parked, drivers are ferried back to the ship and perform the dance again. This happens hundreds of times during each delivery and, since vessels only make money while theyre at sea, it is critical to get the cars unloaded as quickly and safely as possible. The Ceres container facility in Nova Scotia. Halifax Autoport As a subsidiary of CN, it should be no surprise that trains are involved in shipping the vehicles from an Autoport marshalling yard to their final destination. Rail cars, most of which have three levels, stand ready at the foot of Autoports parking areas. Theyre easy to spot, with yellow roofs and silver metal walls. Interestingly, while the walls have slats in them to provide ventilation inside the rail car, those slats are designed in such a way to make it difficult for prying eyes to see what brand of car is riding the rails.A small percentage of vehicles leave Autoport on trailer, depending on brand and final destination. It is not uncommon for residents of Nova Scotia to see tractor trailers with a load of fresh Audis, all of which are wrapped like a Christmas present in an effort to ward off in-transit damage. Save for a transparent window ahead and to the left of the drivers seat, its nigh impossible to tell the colour of that new Audi SUV until it reaches it final destination.Autoport knows what theyre doing but, as with most aspects of life, not everything works smoothly. In July of this year, an Ontario court ruled that Halifax Autoport was on the hook for a $10,000-a-day bill stemming from the storage and preservation of 2,966 BMW and Mini vehicles. Problems began during the brutal weather of February 2015, when the cars were exposed to harsh conditions. BMW argued the exposure to salt and ice created a safety hazard, necessitating a recall. Transport Canada warned of

Octobers pureEV figures up 150 on last year
October’s pure-EV figures up 150% on last year October 2019 was the third best month ever for pure electric sales Pure-electric vehicle registrations in the UK achieved their third best month ever in October 2019 – and the highest total outside of a new registration plate month – according to the latest statistics from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT). Pure-EV figures are up 152% compared to October 2018, and the fuel type is 133% ahead of the first ten months of 2018. More than 28,000 pure-electric models have been registered so far in 2019; over 54,000 plug-in vehicles when PHEVs are included in the figures. Combined sales of electric cars – pure-EVs and plug-in hybrids – are 10% up on 2018 year-to-date, showcasing how well pure-electric models have performed this year, and the relative lack of registrations for PHEVs. Plug-in cars account for 2.7% of all models registered in 2019 so far, with pure-EVs accounting for a little over a half of that figure. With new registration plates out in March and September, the two months traditionally record the greatest number of new cars sold across all fuel types. As such, for October 2019’s pure-electric registrations to be the next highest total after September’s figure of more than 7,700 and over 3,900 sales in March earlier this year, it represents a real show of strength for what is a fast-growing market. Where 2018’s total combined electric vehicle market share – EV and PHEV – ended up on 2.5%, pure-electric models are approaching that figure on its own. The combined figure for 2019 to date is 2.7%, and the last 12 months show a share of 2.9%. Average registrations for 2019 now stand at more than 2,800 for pure-EVs and a little over 2,600 for PHEVs. A combined figure of approaching 5,500 registrations a month for 2019 is around 500 units a month ahead of 2018’s total, and 2019’s figures are accelerating as the year goes on.

Toyota to reveal solid state battery-powered car next year
Toyota will unveil a vehicle powered by solid state batteries at the 2020 Olympics as a means of showcasing its battery capability, the firm’s chief technology officer Shigeki Terashi has revealed ahead of the Tokyo motor show. However, the solid state battery technology – which promises the potential for longer range in smaller and potentially cheaper battery packs which can also take charge faster – will not reach mass production until the middle of the decade, he added. When the technology is used in mass production vehicles it will be rolled out across the firm’s entire line-up of EVs, he said. “We will produce a car with solid state batteries and unveil it to you in 2020,but mass production with solid state batteries will be a little later,” said Terashi, who also highlighted the battery know-how Toyota has accrued through its hybrid leadership developed with the Toyota Prius. That timeline still puts Toyota at the forefront of solid state battery technology. While Volkswagen has talked of a similar timeline, BMW, with which Toyota has various partnerships, has indicated that it doesn’t expect to be selling electrified vehicles using solid state batteries until 2030. The Olympic show car is expected to be based on the Toyota e-Palette, an autonomous platform that the firm has developed and which it is offering to partners to use to showcase their own self-driving technologies. An updated version of the e-Palette is expected to be shown at this year’s Tokyo motor show. Terashi also confirmed that Toyota expects to launch its first electric car for sale in Europe at the sart of the 2020s, with multiple varients expected to be developed across the Toyota and Lexus brands according to where public demand is

The event included a variety of pre-war cars, microcars, muscle cars, hot rods and Porsches from Ontario, Quebec and roughly a dozen American states. The cars body was built by Norrmalm in Stockholm for Max Gumpel, who won two medals swimming for Sweden in the 1912 and 1920 Olympics. Among the 6,300-lb cars many notable features are a siren; a hood mascot molded after the Roman goddess Diana; and a special split front bench seat widened so he could ride with two women. (Greta Garbo, in fact, was frequently seen with Gumpel in the car.)Gumpel put his significant influence to use protecting the car from harm and government conscription during the Second World War, but sold it in 1955. The car traded hands and was restored and re-restored numerous times before being bought up by Jepson in 2017. Audi confirms six new RS models to be revealed this year
Audi Sport will significantly broaden its line-up in the next year, with a new preview image showing the number of new RS models due to launch before 2019 is out. The darkened shot shows six models set to wear the performance flagship badge. The first two from the left are Audi’s prominent Frankfurt motor show debutants: the new generation RS6 Avant and RS7 Sportback. We will also see RS versions of the new Q3 and Q3 Sportback, alongside a facelifted version of the RS4 to round out the 2019 A4 range, and a range-topping RS Q8. Stirred into action by the success of performance SUV ranges from rivals BMW M and Mercedes-AMG, newly appointed managing director Oliver Hoffmann previously confirmed that Audi Sport will begin offering range-topping RS versions of nearly every SUV model in the Audi line-up, starting with the heavily anticipated RS Q8. He said: “We have to stretch our portfolio and the SUV segment is the segment with the most growth. There is high demand from our customers for high-performance SUVs. The RS Q8 we will launch this year. There is really, really high demand for this type of car.” The Q3 Sportback, a coupe-styled version of the Q3, will also join the RS6 and RS7 as an RS variant at September’s Frankfurt motor show. Expectations are that it will retain the inline five-cylinder unit of Audi’s smaller RS models, putting out around 400bhp and making the SUV capable of 0-62mph in around four seconds. Hoffmann, who was recently promoted to the position of managing director after a stint as engineering boss following the departure of CEO Michael-Julius Renz, indicates driveline electrification will play a key role in enhancing the performance of Audi Sport’s RS SUV models. “If you have the SUV segment with the higher weight, it’s easier to implement a hybrid drivetrain. It’s easier because of the packaging and the higher weight,” he said in an interview at the recent Nürburgring 24-hour endurance race. He added: “For sure, we will increase electric for our RS models in the

Porsche sells no more than two duplicate sports cars per year
2019 Porsche 911 GT3 RS A point of pride for most gearheads is the ability to claim their car is unique to another example of the same make and model. This helps to explain why we gravitate towards the aftermarket catalog after hauling home a new ride. After all, why should a person who only knows where the gas goes drive the same exact same machine as someone who knows the firing order?Porsche, king of raking in option-sheet profits, seems to realize this. In an interview with U.K. outlet Autocar, the automakers Zuffenhausen plant manager said the brand sells no more than a pair of identical 911 or 718 models annually. This is great news for gearhead fans of the brand, especially the anoraks who memorize VINs and option codes. Here in Canada, the company offers a spellcheck-vexing program called Porsche Exclusive Manufaktur. It offers buyers a wide range of options for customization, starting with a consultation with a panel of design eggheads. Contrasting seat colours, detailed trim packages, even decorative stitching is on tap. Feel free to click that link to check it out, but know that your productivity will suffer for the rest of the day. All this is, of course, in addition to the minefield of mechanical options one can fit to a 911 or 718. Sure, the guy down the road might also have one in Guards Red, too, but did he select the rear wiper? Of course not. His doesnt have the Sport Chrono Package either, an unforgivable omission. Toss in other interior and exterior frou-frou (leather-trimmed vents and painted washer nozzles, for example) and one begins to understand how Porsche can make this claim. With Porsches level of customization, theres little chance youll see yourself at the next

Year of the underdog: Geely’s rise from obscurity to the top
Few car manufacturers have risen so far in such a short space of time as Geely. The Chinese brand’s name can be translated from Mandarin as ‘auspicious’ and ‘lucky’. Both are entirely appropriate terms for a company founded as recently as 1986 that is now breathing down the necks of the world’s top 10 car makers. Its origins were understandably humble. China was a vastly different country in the early 1980s when founder Li Shufu graduated from university; a hard-line communist state where free enterprise was largely banned and the small number of cars were almost entirely imported. As late as 1985, China’s domestic manufacturers produced just 5200 cars, the entire market for passenger vehicles being around 100,000 a year. Small beginnings Li didn’t start with cars. After making money by taking photographs for tourists, he established a small company in Zhejiang to make fridge parts, then complete units. Politics intervened: Geely missed out on a licence to sell fridges so diversified into motor scooters, quickly becoming one of China’s biggest makers. But what he really wanted to do was build cars. The first four-wheeled Geely was a strange beast. It was built in around 1995 and was clearly inspired by the contemporary round-headlight W210 Mercedes E-Class, featuring a near-identical front end but sitting on the far shorter wheelbase of the First Automobile Works-built Audi 100. It was a one-off creation using fibreglass, but it won Li attention and people wanted to order something similar. Soon afterwards he bought a majority stake in a small truck company (which had the all-important production licence) and launched the Geely HQ, a Daihatsu Charade copy wearing a very Mercedes-like radiator grille, in 1998. Geely expanded rapidly as China’s mobility revolution triggered a huge expansion in car ownership, but it was still a minnow compared with the country’s larger car makers – in 2003, total production was just 76,274 units. While other manufacturers were expanding through joint ventures with overseas firms, bringing expertise and helping to produce cars that Chinese buyers wanted, Li vowed to grow Geely differently, saying such arrangements created complacency and stifled innovation. Joining the world stage The 2005 Frankfurt motor show was packed with premieres that fought for attention, the list of debutants including the Audi Q7, Porsche Cayman S, Mercedes-Benz R-Class, five-cylinder Ford Focus ST and Volkswagen Eos. It also marked Geely’s European debut, the company taking a small stand and introducing the little, lumpy CD coupé, surrounded by characters from the Beijing opera. This was just a year after Geely’s annual production had broken through the 100,000 barrier and the company’s products looked cheap and joyless to European eyes. (Build quality wasn’t great at the time either; in 2008, JD Power ranked Geely 36th and last among Chinese brands.) But being the first independent Chinese car maker to attend an overseas show played well at home, making Geely look like more than just the regional manufacturer it pretty much was at the time. It was a lesson echoed in the later decision to launch the deliberately European LynkCo brand in China first. The company’s international outlook was growing, and it formed a joint venture with Manganese Bronze, then owners of the LTI taxi company, to make cars in Shanghai. The big league Outside China, only keen motor industry watchers were likely to have heard of Geely before late 2009. That changed when the company admitted it was in negotiations with Ford to buy Volvo. The sale concluded the following year, with parent company Zhejiang Geely Holding Group taking control. This means that Volvo Car Group is on the same level as Geely Auto within the corporate hierarchy, not subsidiary to it. Despite recession-hit Ford’s enthusiasm to offload Volvo, Li had to work hard to be taken seriously as a bidder. Geely generated barely a sixth of Volvo’s revenue at the time, but it had major backing from Chinese banks and managed to land the Swedish marque for $1.8 billion, barely a quarter of what Ford had paid for it 11 years earlier. Few industry watchers understood the logic behind the deal. Automotive mergers are normally between companies with significant overlap looking to reduce costs. Geely and Volvo had almost nothing obvious in common, and many predicted that attempts to merge operations would be disastrous. But Li didn’t want a merger, promising at the time that “Volvo is Volvo and Geely is Geely”. As it soon became clear, Geely had effectively purchased a hugely experienced European brand to become its own joint venture partner. Swedish powerhouse Geely’s gamble on Volvo would only work if the Swedish company’s fading fortunes could be turned around. The brand’s sales were sliding and it had been starved of investment during the last years of Ford ownership. A Volvo engineer admitted later that if a light bulb
