What is it?The first plug-in hybrid version of Toyota’s best-selling RAV4, the Prime looks to expand on the number of electrified compact sport-cutes Toyota Canada sells, which currently account for about a quarter of the 62,000 RAV4s the company hopes to sell this year. Why is it important?Toyota is changing the focus of all its hybrids, emphasizing the performance improvement of electrification as much as its environmental benefits. So, in marrying a 2.5-litre Atkinson-cycle four with Toyotas Hybrid Synergy Drive, the new RAV4 Prime boasts 302 net horsepower, the most ever for the sport-cute. And, yes, it is more than the then-top-of-the-line 3.5-litre V6 Toyota offered in the RAV4 between 2006 and 2012.Those 302 horses also make the Prime quicker than any previous RAV4, its 5.8-second sprint to 96 kilometres an hour (60 mph) in true hot-rod territory. Hybrids are no longer just for fuel economy!Check Out All Our Auto Show CoverageNot that the Prime suffers in that arena. Thanks to the estimated 60 kilometres of electric-only range afforded by its huge-for-a-PHEV 17.8-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery, the new RAV4 plug-in is rated for the electric equivalent of 2.6 litres per 100 kilometres. And, of course, thanks to the rear-mounted traction motor, the Prime offers Toyotas Electronic On-Demand All-Wheel-Drive system. On a more pedestrian front, even the SE version of the RAV4 Prime gets heated and power adjustable seats and an eight-inch Touchscreen while the top-of-the-line XSE gets the RAV4s first paddle shifters and 19-inch rims, the largest ever offered on a hybrid RAV4. When is it arriving?Summer of 2020.Should you buy it?Damn straight you should. Any time you can cut your fuel consumption as dramatically as this while increasing performance so substantially is a good day for any SUV owner. Factor in the convenience of plugging in at home and quick refuelling on the road, and the RAV4 would seem an optimal blend of traditional and electric technologies for what we hope will be a reasonable price. As the RAV4s press release boasts, welcome to a new chapter of Toyota SUV performance.LISTEN: What do car dealers think about electric vehicles? Troubleshooter: Yes, electric vehicles still need maintenance
A Tesla Model S in a service garage bay.Tesla No doubt one of the big selling points of EVs (electric vehicles) is their reduced maintenance requirements. Of course, thats seldom what you hear on the showroom floor. Instead, that might get exaggerated so you hear no maintenance needed! from some less-than-stellar sales reps. But while its true EVs dont require oil or coolant changes or spark plug replacements, they do have systems that need to be inspected and maintained on a regular basis. And, yes, the costs of operation (including electricity rates) are a fraction of a traditional combustion engine vehicles.Nissan recommends a 12,000-km service interval with two basic menus for its all-electric Leaf. At the first 12,000-km mark (and for every 24,000 km after that) its simply a tire rotation and visual inspection of axles, suspension components, brakes and steering mechanisms. The idea here is theres no mandatory replacement of anything, its all based on the cars condition. This way, someone whos relatively easy on their ride will pay less than someone who drives it like its a rental. As many EVs serve as second household vehicles and dont necessarily accumulate a lot of mileage, having an annual check-up (even though less than 12,000 km may have been travelled) is a wise idea. This service at a dealership should cost less than $100, but prices may vary, as they say.At the 24,000-km mark, Nissan lists the same tire rotation and inspection but also includes brake fluid replacement, EV battery usage report, cabin filter replacement and a check on reduction gear oil level and condition. Dealership service departments will charge on average between $150 and $250 for this checkup. The Tesla programTesla is a little more lenient in its maintenance requirements, with tire inspections every 16,000 km to 20,000 km and rotations or alignments based on tire wear and condition. Cabin filters are to be replaced every two years, and HEPA filters every three years. Air filter replacement needs are dictated solely by the environment you drive in. If you regularly use unpaved roads, or are stuck driving through construction zones, the dust thats kicked up may require more frequent filter replacement. In these cases youd be wise to familiarize yourself with how to access and check these items. For those vehicles running in cold weather conditions, like say, Canada, Tesla recommends annual brake inspections with cleaning and lubricant services. As the braking systems on EVs (and hybrids, too) incorporate electrical generators, keeping them in tip-top condition is important. A Tesla car arrives at a service center in Los Angeles, California on March 4, 2019. Mark Ralston / Getty via AP As with Nissan, Tesla recommends inspecting brake fluid for contamination every two years but only replacing it if needed. Condensation is the culprit theyre looking for, and left unchecked it can cause corrosion on metal components of the brakes hydraulic system. One unique kink to Teslas maintenance guide is the requirement to replace a desiccant unit in the vehicles air conditioning system. Also known as a receiver-drier, it helps to remove condensation from the system, keeping valves moving. When you go through these lists, youll notice many of the items are relatively easy DIY affairs for even the most technically challenged. Do a few of these yourself, and you can really earn bragging rights at the water-cooler who-has-the-lowest-auto-costs

New Ford suspension kit answers ‘Do you even lift, bro?’ with ‘yes’
A first-ever offering from Ford, the off-road leveling kits bring FOX™ shocks, exclusive Ford Performance tuning, 2-inch front lift, new front coilovers, vehicle-specific upper front mounts and locking spring pre-load rings Despite the companys ardent refusal (or not?) to sell the Ranger Raptor in this country, Fords not been shy about taking the goods to its competition in other segments of the truck market.Theyve promised a Tremor package for Super Duty to take on Rams Power Wagon, along with the familiar FX4 trim which meets Chevys Z71 kit head on.Now, the Glass House has rolled out answer to the Silverado Trail Boss with a bone thrown to those of us who pine for a Ranger Raptor. From the Ford Performance Parts arm of the company comes an off-road levelling kit, one which includes Fox Shocks and a 2-inch front lift. Also in the box are new front coilovers and vehicle-specific upper front mounts. Locking spring pre-load rings are also on board to tie it all together.Ford Performance engineers worked with Fox to develop unique internal valving for the shocks, meaning the mighty Raptor isnt the only F-150 to wear a set of suspenders from that company. Both Ranger and F-150 will see improvements to front ground clearance measures, plus better approach and breakover angles, not to mention a more aggressive stance. The company estimates Ranger will see a 21-per-cent increase in approach angle and a 10-per-cent increase in breakover angle once the kit is installed. Big-bro F-150, with a 145-inch wheelbase, should get an approximate 22-per-cent increase in approach angle and seven-per-cent increase in breakover. If youre unfamiliar with off-road terms, this basically means the trucks can run over more stuff.Development and testing for the leveling kits included high-speed off-roading in California and low-speed Arizona rock-crawling. Expect to pay in the neighbourhood of two grand for the kit, which can be installed by dealers later this autumn on any 2019 Ranger 44 and 2015-2019 F-150 44

Yes, now Pagani’s mulling over building an SUV
The 2019 Pagani Huayra BC RoadsterNicholas Maronese Pagani, the Italian maker of hand-crafted hypercars with psychotic levels of performance, is, yes, reportedly thinking about building an SUV. According to an interview with Horacio Pagani himself on the digital pages of AutoCar, its a topic which has been discussed a number of times with collectors. In other news, pigs have learned to fly and old Alfas have suddenly become reliable daily drivers. We kid we should have known this development was coming, of course. Porsche, with the Cayenne, arguably opened the floodgates on the idea of a sports-car maker building SUVs. Now, theres a whole market full of stilt-wearing all-wheel-drive rigs from the likes of Bentley and Lamborghini.Still, we shouldnt fault the man for listening to his customers. After all, if the outrageously wealthy are asking him for a Pagani SUV to match their Zonda and Huayra, he would be silly to say no. Projects such as these pave the way for future car development, often with cubic acres of dollar bills.Pagani goes on to say that an SUV from the company that bears his surname would likely have a price tag in the neighbourhood of 3 million Euros ($4.4 million). They would access the technology of Mercedes-Benz a logical statement given the relationship between the two companies and maybe use the big SUV platform. A Pagani SUV based on a G-Wagen and stuffed with a V12 might not be so bad after all. The next hypercar from Pagani, set to replace the spellcheck-vexing Huayra, is scheduled to appear in the calendar year 2022. At its outset, the car will deploy a familiar Mercedes-AMG V12 twin-turbo, eschewing hybrid technology until a later time. In fact, Pagani said in the Autocar interview that the mighty V12 will be homologated until 2026, which is great news for gearheads who enjoy a screaming exhaust note.A move to electrification is on the horizon, of course, as only the most tone-deaf automaker would refuse to recognize consumer trends. Pagani is possibly the least tone-deaf CEO on the planet, so it makes sense that future hypercars from the brand will have some electrons in their

Put on Your Judgy-Pants: Yes, you could call this an ‘unsafe’ load
This is not how you carry wide loads in a car.David Fafinski / Facebook On a recent Thursday afternoon near Burlington, Ont., a driver decided to start his do-it-yourself project a little early. Police received several reports of an unsafe load, and of course, there is a picture. There is also video posted, but it’s disappointing. If you’re gonna have a dashcam people, have it pointed in the right direction. Oh, what great times we live in. It appears to be an older Chevrolet Lumina sedan. I’m pretty sure there are four doors, because the rear two are open, with lumber occupying the back seat. Wouldn’t be much to get excited about here, except the length of the wood spans the width of the car seat, plus another metre or two. It totally takes your eye away from the large cabinet perched awkwardly in the trunk — not a tie-down or bungee cord in sight. It’s important to note this car isn’t on the shoulder. It’s driving in a live lane of traffic, with both doors and the trunk open. This vehicle appears to have just come down off the Skyway Bridge in Burlington, a towering and lengthy span featuring crazy crosswinds and eight lanes of thundering traffic. It was up on this bridge that the dump truck with a raised box smashed into the infrastructure back in 2014, causing $1 million in damage. With 80,000 cars a day whistling through here, this place is dangerous enough without freelancing yahoos. Time to put on your judgy-pants. Take Our
