Tesla Model 3 scores 5-stars in EuroNCAP tests The new Tesla has achieved high marks in crash test programmes Tesla’s Model 3 has been awarded a five-star rating by safety experts EuroNCAP. The latest EV from Tesla already held a five-star rating from the US crash test bidy, but now it holds one in Europe too. It achieved a perfect score in the frontal offset deformable barrier crash test – a key element of assessments since EuroNCAP began in 1997 – and a score of 94% is the best yet under the latest protocols in the 2019 Safety Assist tests. EuroNCAP highlighted the Model 3’s driver assist systems as impressing crash testers, which are increasingly important in a vehicle achieving high marks. Other cars to score highly in the latest round of tests include the DS 3 Crossback, which will be available as an E-Tense pure-electric model later this year. It scores four-stars with standard safety equipment, but five when fitted with a safety pack. Earlier this year Audi was awarded five-stars for its e-tron EV, and at the end of last year, Jaguar’s I-Pace achieved the same score.

Goodwood Festival of Speed 2019: Live updates and pictures
Welcome to Autocar’s extensive coverage of the 2019 Goodwood Festival of Speed. One of the UK’s most hotly anticipated motoring events opens its doors today, with hundreds of thousands of spectators expected to arrive over the weekend. The covers have started coming off all manner of supercars, classic metal and upcoming new releases, and we’re here throughout the weekend to bring you all the announcements. Be sure to follow along here, and on the Autocar Twitter, Facebook and Instagram to get a first look at some of the industry’s most important and exciting new cars. This year’s event has seen some changes to the Festival layout, with the Supercar paddock relocated to make room for the Arena, a new showcase of the extreme end of motorsport: think stunt driving, drift cars and daring motorcycle displays, with some of the biggest stars of each discipline set to appear. The Goodwood Central Feature, an always impressive monument, is this year dedicated to Aston Martin, in honour of the 70th anniversary of the brand winning its first race at Goodwood. Some of the world’s rarest, most valuable and most exciting Astons are on display to mark the occasion. This year’s event is also celebrating the career of seven-time F1 champion Michael Schumacher, with team-mates, former rivals and a collection of his most iconic Formula 1 cars coming together in one place. Watch the Goodwood live stream If you aren’t able to make it to the Festival of Speed in person, don’t worry: Goodwood will be streaming all the action, so you don’t have to miss a thing. Every burnout, every drift, every attempt to smash the hill climb record – it will all be broadcast live. You can watch it all right here: All the cars revealed at Goodwood 2019 One of the biggest reasons so many people come to Goodwood every year? The huge list of new models on show, either on static display or being driven flat out up the hillclimb. Here’s a list of everything revealed so far, as well as what’s due to make an appearance across the weekend: Airspeeder flying car Developed by Australian start-up Alauda Racing, the Airspeeder is a vision of what the world’s first flying car race series could look like. The Mk. II Speeder will perform its first public display at the Goodwood Aerodrome, while the company’s new Airspeeder Mk. IV, the world’s first piloted octocopter, will appear at the festival as a vision of the world’s first flying sports car. Alfa Romeo is celebrating its return to Formula 1 with two special-edition variants of the Giulia and Stelvio Quadrifoglio. The limited-run ‘Alfa Romeo Racing’ versions of the performance saloon and SUV gain a red and white livery and come with the brand’s Sparco carbonfibre-shell bucket seats fitted as standard. The 503bhp 2.9-litre V6 remains the same, however. Aston’s presence at Goodwood 2019 will be bigger than ever, as the brand celebrates the 50th anniversary of its fabled 1959 Le Mans victory with an extensive display of its most revered models. The new DBS Superleggera Volante will head up Aston’s collection, and will make its dynamic debut on the hillclimb. Revealed in May, the £250,000 model features a 715bhp 5.2-litre V12, with Aston claiming a “sensory overload” thanks to the electric folding soft-top. Also on display will be the recently launched hardcore Rapide AMR, and its seven-speed manual gearbox stablemate, the Vantage AMR. The firm’s new Rapide E will put its 602bhp all-electric powertrain to the test on the hill, before we get our first chance to hear the upcoming DBX SUV driven in anger. Making its UK debut is the newly completed DB4 GT Zagato Continuation (fresh from its first public appearance at Le Mans last month), which will sit alongside the Vulcan AMR Pro, Aston’s current World Endurane Racing Vantage GTE, and a selection of Vanquish Zagatos. It’s been eight years since Cheshire-based Briggs Automotive Company (BAC) first launched the Mono single-seater. Now, at long last, the company is turning up the wick with a new version heading to Goodwood. It’s set to be unveiled on the Thursday, with preview images showing that it doesn’t look dramatically different but sports a newly modified engine to make it faster. We’ll learn more about it at the show. Bentley revealed the new Flying Spur late last month, and it’ll be shown in static and dynamic form at Goodwood. The luxury four-door is taking aim at the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class and Rolls-Royce Ghost. Based on the platform of the Continental GT, it is the first Bentley to feature all-wheel steering – while it promises to offer the firm’s most tech-laden cabin yet. Citroen is celebrating its centenary at the 2019 Festival of Speed. Alongside what’s expected to be a huge variety of iconic classics spanning its history, we will be seeing the UK debut of two concepts. The first is the Ami One, a quirky, budget two-seater that meets Europe’s quadricycle regulations and could be

Nearly-new buying guide: Mazda 3
Given Mazda’s fondness for clever engineering and doing things its own sweet way, any new model from the Japanese car maker is always worth getting excited about. And so it was with the Mazda 3 of 2014. It has just been replaced by an all-new model, but as late as last year the outgoing car was still getting the better of fresher rivals. In this magazine it found itself in the final four of an eight-car group test battling the Skoda Octavia, Volkswagen Golf and new Ford Focus for top honours. It came third, but Matt Saunders was moved enough to say that he couldn’t have picked a tougher dynamic test for the Focus than to compare it with the Mazda 3. He was referring to the hatchback version, by the way. There’s also a saloon, called the Fastback, but the hatch is easily the more popular and the one we’re interested in here. The model has only just been replaced, so you can still pick up 2019/19-registered cars with a couple of thousand miles from around £16,000. At this money, many are high-spec 2.2d SE-L Nav and Sport Nav models. If you’re a high-mileage driver or just like the idea of 60mpg without trying, these 148bhp 2.2-litre diesel versions are a good choice – and decent performers. There’s a 104bhp 1.5 diesel, too, introduced in 2016, but it’s weedy and rare. If you must, you can pick up a 2018/18 SE-L Nav with 5000 miles for £14,000. Really, because there are more to choose from and they suit the Mazda 3’s light-footed nature better, it’s the petrols you want to focus on. At various times the model was offered with a choice of three petrol engines: a 1.5 with a lowly 99bhp (it was dropped in 2016) and a pair of 2.0s, one making 118bhp and the other with a healthy 163bhp. Typical of Mazda’s go-it-alone approach, none is turbocharged. The company claims that, as a result, they produce better real-world economy. In any case, they pull strongly enough from low revs, although they do feel a little flat in the mid-range. Our pick is the 118bhp 2.0 for its blend of performance, economy and price. The more powerful 163bhp motor should be a blast but produces the same 115lb ft at the same 4000rpm as the 118bhp version, so is little quicker while being more expensive. A 2016/66-reg Mazda 3 2.0 120PS Sport with 10,000 miles costs around £13,250, compared with £14,000 for a 165PS model. The model was facelifted in 2016 when it gained a revised grille, improved interior materials and an electronic parking brake. Throughout, trims ranged from entry-level SE to Sport Nav. Automatic emergency braking and alloys were standard. SE-L is a good choice, with its rear parking sensors and climate control, and it rides sweetly on its 16in wheels. It’d be our pick, except that Sport Nav trim, with its larger wheels and sportier instrument display, appeals to the emotions more. Need to know Safety recalls have been a feature of the 3. They number around five and range from inoperable windscreen wipers, through a software error that can cause engine failure to poorly tightened fuel injector mounting nuts – all careless oversights for a Japanese manufacturer. Mazda otherwise has a good reputation for sweating over small technical issues until it cracks them. The 3’s 2017 facelift introduced the company’s G-Vectoring Control system, which stabilises the car in corners by automatically backing off the throttle a touch when it senses a change in steering angle. If you like pin-sharp radio reception, avoid early models – they had no digital radio. And, incidentally, no Apple CarPlay. Our pick Mazda 3 2.0 120ps Sport Nav: Strong performance, a BOSE sound system and a head-up display are this version’s highlights, although the 18in wheels spoil the ride. An approved used 2014-reg car with 50,000 miles is £8795. Wild card Mazda 3 2.2 150ps TD SE: The big 2.2-litre diesel is an oddball in this class but does the business, returning 60mpg and, thanks to 280lb ft, pulling like a train. A 2015-reg example with 48,000 miles is £8500. Ones we found 2015 Mazda 3 2.2 TD SE, 61,000 miles, £7000 2016 Mazda 3 2.0 120PS SE Nav, 44,000 miles, £8495 2017 Mazda 3 2.0 120PS SE Nav, 35,000 miles, £10,495 2018 Mazda 3 2.0 120PS Sport Nav 21,000 miles,

Reminder: Your passenger has to be breathing if you’re using the HOV lane
An old hearse in front of a crumbling warehouse.Getty People have been trying to beat the High-Occupancy Lane rules since the light-traffic stretches of pavement were introduced, conniving all sorts of wacky carpooling schemes to try and get in front of the gridlock on their commute.According to the LA Times, the latest trick tried Stateside involved counting a corpse in a casket in the back of a hearse as a passenger, even if their destination may be a little more final.Trooper Travis Smaka of the Nevada Highway Patrol apparently pulled over a black Chrysler minivan July 1 that appeared to only have one person sitting in the front, without a passenger, zipping down the HOV.Smaka asked for the drivers license and registration, and then for an explanation as to how exactly he qualified for carpool-lane use; the driver nodded and motioned to the back of the van.Oh, you have a deceased in the back? the trooper replied. He did. Then the trooper had to tell the mortuary driver that, well, corpses dont count.Yes, its a person, but theyre not in a seat and theyre not living and breathing, another trooper, Jason Buratczuk, told the Times. What if the dead were in the passenger seat? quizzed the reporter on the story. Buratczuk shot back: Then the HOV violation is the least of your concerns.HOV lane enforcement is being tightened up in Nevada, the newspaper reports, and now carries a fine of US$250; monitoring now occurs all day, not just during morning and evening rush hour.Today we stopped a local funereal home hearse in the HOV lane. The driver had the dearly departed in the back, he thought the deceased could be counted as two people. I guess we should clarify this, living, breathing people count for the HOV lane. The driver was given a warning pic.twitter.com/OQms0ktl8t NHP Southern Command (@NHPSouthernComm) July 1, 2019High-Occupancy Vehicle lanes are made to decrease fossil fuel usage and pollution by reducing the number of cars on the roads. If your passengers are instead on their way to becoming fossil fuels themselves? Were afraid you might just have to wait in traffic with the rest of the pre-deceased.Smaka ended up letting the hearse driver off with a warning. Smakas answer when the driver insisted he had a passenger on board? Hes not with us

Tesla paces record quarter for deliveries thanks to Model 3 gains
Tesla saw a record quarter for deliveries, the company said early July, alleviating the worst fears about demand for the Elon Musk-led companys electric vehicles. The Model 3 maker handed over 95,200 cars to customers in the three months that ended in June, exceeding the previous best mark set in the last quarter of 2018. Teslas delivery count exceeded all but one analysts estimate in a Bloomberg News survey. While the results go a long way toward contradicting Teslas doubters, it remains to be seen whether this level of demand is sustainable or profitable. The US$3,750 U.S. federal tax credit buyers were eligible for was cut by half beginning July 1, and deliveries tailed off the last time the incentive shrank. Musk also has said the company will post a loss for the quarter, then report positive earnings in the second half.Tesla also left out of its statement any mention of its full-year forecast for 360,000 to 400,000 deliveries, a projection it re-affirmed in its release a quarter ago. Tesla representatives didnt respond when asked whether the company is sticking with its guidance. It will have to average more than 100,000 units per quarter in the second half to reach the low end of the range.Musk, 48, urged employees to go all out in the final days of Teslas first full quarter in which Model 3s made their way to buyers in Europe and China. Overseas demand contributed to deliveries of the sedan jumping to 77,550 units, more than all the vehicles Tesla handed over in the first quarter. The big picture is that something is happening around electric vehicles, said Gene Munster, a managing partner of venture capital firm Loup Ventures and longtime Tesla bull. The Model 3 is on fire.Several analysts raised their delivery estimates as the quarter came to an end, citing brisk sales to key European markets including Norway and the Netherlands, as well as the effect of incentives that Canada began offering in May to stoke purchases of battery-powered cars. Tesla doesnt break down deliveries by region in its release. One reason Wall Street remains concerned about Teslas profitability is shrinking demand for the higher-margin Model S and Model X. Combined deliveries dropped to 17,650 in the quarter, down more than 20 per cent from a year ago. Investors are concerned the cheaper Model 3 is cannibalizing the companys more lucrative vehicles.Tesla also said orders exceeded deliveries during the quarter and it expects to boost production and hand over more cars in the next three months. The number of vehicles in transit at the end of June was more than 7,400.Teslas Model 3 sales are far outpacing rivals. General Motors sold just 3,965 of its all-electric Chevrolet Bolt in the second quarter, while Volkswagens Audi delivered just 1,835 battery-powered E-Tron

Lee Iacocca, star CEO who led Ford, saved Chrysler, has died
Chrysler president Lee Iacocca unveils the companys new minivan in 1983, opening a new automotive segment.FCA Lee Iacocca, the U.S. auto executive and television pitchman whose feel for consumers changing tastes helped produce the Ford Mustang and the Chrysler minivan and made him one of the first celebrity CEOs, has died. He was 94.His passing was confirmed by Fiat Chrysler Automobiles in a statement. The death was caused by complications from Parkinsons disease, the Washington Post said, citing his daughter Lia Iacocca Assad.Studied in business schools, emulated by a generation of executives, Iacocca was a star salesman for cars and for himself, spurring periodic talk of running for president. (He never did.)Lee Iacocca was truly bigger than life and he left an indelible mark on Ford, the auto industry and our country, Ford Executive Chairman Bill Ford said in a statement. I will always appreciate how encouraging he was to me at the beginning of my career. He was one of a kind and will be dearly missed.Iacocca arguably ushered in the era of the celebrity auto executive, with others such as Sergio Marchionne, Elon Musk and Carlos Ghosn following in his footsteps. Marchionne died last year, and Ghosn fell from grace in November after his arrest for financial crimes related to his tenure at Nissan.I didnt always agree with him, but he was a brilliant visionary, said Bob Lutz, former Chrysler president, who worked closely with Iaccoca and clashed with him at times. He was flawed in many ways but when I rated the CEOs I knew, he came out on top.Iacocca was no miracle worker, however, and the American auto industrys struggles didnt end with his tenure. Japanese carmakers saw their U.S. market share grow 10-fold, to about 30 per cent, during his 23 years leading two of Americas Big Three automakers. Chrysler, which averted collapse in 1980 in what may have been Iacoccas crowning achievement, was buffeted by the financial crisis and recession of 2008, filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in April 2009.It pains me to see my old company, which has meant so much to America, on the ropes, Iacocca told Newsweek at the time. The company emerged as Chrysler Group LLC, majority-owned by Italys Fiat. It is now named Fiat Chrysler Automobiles.Iacocca first came to prominence when, at 36, he was named general manager of the Ford division in 1960. With a group of like-minded young executives, he formed what became known as the Fairlane Committee named for the inn where they met for brainstorming dinners to discuss how to design a low-cost, sporty car that would entice younger, more affluent families to become two-car households. It had to be a sports car but more than a sports car, Iacocca wrote in his memoir. We wanted to develop a car that you could drive to the country club on Friday night, to the drag strip on Saturday and to church on Sunday. The Mustang, introduced at the 1964 Worlds Fair in New York, was an unqualified hit.Iacocca became president of Dearborn, Michigan-based Ford in 1970. At 46, he was second in command only to Chairman Henry Ford II, grandson of the companys founder and seven years his senior. During Iacoccas eight-year tenure, the two men sparred over topics big and small, from car design to perceived personal slights.Executive-suite reorganizations in 1977 and 1978 resulted in de facto demotions of Iacocca and led to a showdown meeting on July 13, 1978, at which Ford ordered him to resign. His last day on the payroll was Oct. 15, his 54th birthday. He had been at Ford for 32 years. Two weeks after his ouster from Ford, Iacocca took over as president and chief operating officer at Chrysler, brought on by Chairman John Riccardo just as the company reported a quarterly loss of US$160 million, its largest at the time.I really didnt want to retire at 54, Iacocca said at a press conference. I really didnt want to be banished from the auto scene. His 14 years at Chrysler gave Iacocca the chance to pursue initiatives that had met resistance at Ford. These included the fuel-efficient K-series Dodge Aries and Plymouth Reliant models as well as the first U.S.-produced minivan, introduced in 1983 as the Plymouth Voyager and Dodge Caravan. He steered Chryslers 1987 acquisition of American Motors Corp., with its Jeep franchise.First, though, Iacocca had to save Chrysler from looming bankruptcy. After becoming chairman and CEO in September 1979, he led a cost-cutting program that closed plants and slashed tens of thousands of jobs. He also sealed Chryslers deal with Congress and President Jimmy Carters administration for US$1.5 billion in federal loan guarantees. In 1983, seven years earlier than required, Chrysler finished repaying the $1.2 billion in government-backed loans it had used.As much as for any of his corporate decisions, Iacocca became known as the straight-talking, patriotic pitchman in Chryslers television commercials, produced by New York-based firm Kenyon Eckhardt Inc., in which he vouched

Boat blocks Toronto highway on Canada Day, sparks national caption contest
Drivers who opted to cut a few minutes off of their Canada Day travels this year by paying the toll and hopping on the 407 ETR Highway in the Greater Toronto Area were rewarded by an interesting sight. Because at some point on July 1, 2019, there was a large water vessel parked haphazardly across the left lane of the 100-km/h highway. The 20-ish-foot motorboat allegedly fell off a trailer on its way to or from one of Ontario’s boat-friendly bodies of water, thus blocking the left two lanes of the 407 Highway near Dixie Road.As a way of letting the public know about the potential delay – though traffic looks to be moving pretty well in the photo provided – the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) shipped out a Tweet asking the public to caption the photo, which shows the boat lying perpendicular to the traffic lines, its white paint scraped off on the highway’s surface. Ford Mustang creator Lee Iacocca dies at 94
Lee Iacocca, best known for his work in developing the original Ford Mustang, has died at the age of 94. Born in Pennsylvania in 1924, Iacocca studied politics and plastics at the prestigious Princeton University, before joining Ford’s engineering department shortly after the Second World War. Early success at the company was followed by successive promotions to vice-president and general manager of the Ford Division; Ford’s vice-president, car and truck group; executive vice-president; and finally president in 1970. Iacocca was instrumental in the conception of many of Ford’s most successful vehicles, but it was the first-generation Mustang, launched in 1964, that cemented his reputation as one of the most influential engineers of the 20th century. Renowned for his innovative management style, with a heightened focus on collaboration, Iacocca is quoted as once saying: “I hire people brighter than me and then I get out of their way”. With this ethos, Iacocca contributed to a $2 billion profit for Ford in 1978, but constant disagreements with chairman Henry Ford II led to his dismissal that year, and he joined an ailing Chrysler just as the brand had sold its European division to Peugeot in an effort to reduce losses. At Chrysler, Iacocca is credited, essentially, with the birth of the minivan. Inspired by the huge demand for upright, spacious, family-haulers in Japan, the Dodge Caravan and Plymouth Voyager were overwhelming sales hits for parent company Chrysler, and are widely associated with its return from the brink of bankruptcy. Iacocca was also responsible for the company’s line of ‘K-cars’ – efficient and compact saloons based on design plans that had been earlier rejected by Ford. These sold in big numbers, allowing Chrysler to later purchase AMC and its Jeep subsidiary – a brand it still owns today. His influential role as president, CEO and chairman of Chrysler rendered him a public figurehead for the brand, and his oft-cited catchphrase – “if you can find a better car, buy it” – helped the company to promote its cars as good-value, reliable and efficient options. Although he officially retired in 1992, from 2005 onwards Iacocca participated in several publicity campaigns for Chrysler, appearing alongside well-known figures like Snoop Dogg and The Muppets. Outside of motoring, Iacocca was a flagbearer for the 1982 restoration of New York’s Statue of Liberty and a campaigner for diabetes awareness following the death of his wife Mary, a sufferer of the disease, in 1983. Iacocca died in his Los Angeles home as a result of complications related to Parkinson’s disease. He is survived by two

Koenigsegg complains Bonhams auction house undervalues One:1 up for sale
Koenigsegg believes that an upcoming auction hosted by Bonhams has undervalued one of its rarest and fastest hypercar offerings, a One:1.The car was owned by Equatorial Guinea President Obiang Nguema Mbasogos son, Teodoro Nguema Obiang Mangue, and is one of 11 highly valued supercars seized from him during a raid in Geneva.According to Motoring Research, Bonhams estimates the One:1 will sell for between US$1.8 million and US$2.3 million, but thats a heck of a lot cheaper than the US$2.8 million it sold for originally.Koenigsegg doesnt stand to make any money from the private sale of the supercar, but in a statement to Bonhams, questions why the value was so low, given the rarity of the vehicle. In an effort to provide Bonhams all the opportunities to do the right thing, we sent them a draft of this text in advance so they can correct their estimate, the statement read. They did revise their estimate slightly to a figure that is still not even close to proven market value and substantially lower than our firm offers. We at Koenigsegg are not willing to stand by on the sidelines and observe this wrongful and harming behavior without reacting The question is, why should bidders, who trust Bonhamss judgment, not be given a fair chance to jump on the opportunity, instead of stopping their bids short, based on information Bonhams knows is incorrect? There are only six examples of the One:1 in the world, so we understand why the Swedish brand is upset Bonhams would set such a low estimate for it, which serves to limit the value in the minds of the buyer. All proceeds from the sale will go to benefit Equatorial Guinea, which Mbasogo ruled for over 32 years while infamously enriching himself and keeping the country in
