A 1937 Studebaker Coupe Express from the Rier Collection.Supplied / Sheldon Rier A Cambridge, Ontario-based collection of classic cars and trucks is being trimmed down via a massive auction July 6 numbering some 150 lots, most of them of rare cars, trucks and motorcycles dating back to 1927.Sheldon Rier and his father John have been acquiring obscure classic cars for many years, with one of their focuses on Studebaker models and trucks.Dad had a 1936 Studebaker back in the mid-70s, and all these years later we have this flock of them, says the younger Rier about the collection. The sheer size of it is getting to be a lot for the pair to store and maintain, so the plan is to shed the bulk of the cars via this sale. Its a pretty big change for us but its a good time for others to be caretakers of some of these cars that we have had so much fun with, Sheldon Rier said. Highlights from the sale include a concours-shown 1937 Studebaker Dictator Business Coupe; a 1927 Ford Model T pickup; a 1932 Auburn Brougham; a 1941 Willys pickup; and dozens of cars and trucks in project condition.Aside from the classic cars up for sale, the auction will see some of the Riers motorcycles, automobilia, and old literature, brochure and parts trade hands, too.The auction preview is July 5, with the actual auction going down the next day; bidding can be done in person, online or by

Reader Review: 2020 Kia Telluride SX
Paul Hughes with the 2020 Kia Telluride in Calgary.Azin Ghaffari/Postmedia Thanks to large-and-in-charge chrome letters that spell out TELLURIDE across the hood and the tailgate, theres no mistaking this new three-row Kia SUV for any other vehicle. However, a friend of Calgary reviewer Paul Hughes said he thought the brand-new 2020 Telluride looked like a smaller version of Cadillacs Escalade.I think thats something of a compliment, Hughes says, and adds, I think the Telluride is really stylish, and a very cool looking vehicle. Walking up to it, its not as tall as Id expected; it was more car like than truck like.Kia first showed off its Telluride as a concept vehicle in 2016 and then introduced the production version earlier this year at the North American International Auto Show. Its a big, family hauler set to compete with the likes of the Ford Explorer, Honda Pilot, Toyota Highlander and Nissan Pathfinder. The Telluride shares its platform with the also-new Hyundai Pallisade, and in Canada, the vehicle is available in three trims EX, SX and SX Limited. The base EX is well-equipped, and SX adds features including 20-inch alloy wheels, dual sunroof, Harmon/Kardon premium sound system and leather seats. Depending on how its trimmed out, the Telluride is capable of carrying either seven or eight passengers. Every model is equipped with all-wheel drive and power comes from a normally aspirated 3.8-litre V6 engine paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. There are four selectable drive modes, including Comfort, Eco, Sport and Smart. And, the AWD system can be configured for Snow, Mud or Sand. Getting into the Ebony black-on-black leather SX model Hughes was testing, he says he was most impressed with the quality of the hides covering the seats, including the 10-way power adjustable drivers chair. The rest of the cockpit was well laid out, in his opinion, and he liked the size of the infotainment screen and the gauge cluster. The cockpit portion of the dash had the tach and speedometer on opposite sides of the centre display which contained loads of information, he says. There was no obstruction of the speedometer no matter where I set the telescoping steering wheel. The centre storage console featured a shelf and was not just a big milk crate stuck in the vehicle. It offered plenty of storage space, and there were nooks and cubbies throughout the Telluride. It sounds simple, but Hughes was also impressed with the cupholders that were spring loaded to accommodate the smallest to the largest cups. There were really nice accents on the dash, almost like a dark grey, weathered barn wood, Hughes says. It made the inside very stylish, and very sophisticated. That 3.8L V6 engine was no slouch. Hughes says he drove the Telluride to Banff and back, claiming the powerplant wasnt noisy. The engine always got the vehicle smartly up to speed (and sometimes easily beyond the limit), and it ran very smoothly. On that Banff journey, the engine returned 10.1L/100km. During the week-long test drive, Hughes drove the Telluride mostly in Comfort mode. The eight-speed transmission shifted smoothly, with near imperceptible shift points. Incredibly quiet, with very little wind or road noise, is how Hughes describes the overall cabin experience. He also feels the Telluride is packed with innovative features, including the Talk Now function. He says, Touch the screen where indicated and the music from the very impressive Harmon/Kardon sound system was suppressed. A microphone then picks up your voice and transmits it through the speakers in the vehicle which allows you to speak at a normal level to passengers in the second and third rows without having to raise your voice. One feature he didnt like was the auto stop/start system.Maybe Im old school, he says, but I dont like it when a car shuts off at a stop sign or a red light. Its the lurch that happens when you take your foot off the brake, I just dont like it.In all driving conditions, Hughes says the Telluride cornered well with very little body lean. In parking lots, he says the large SUV handled more like a sedan with a tight turning radius than a big truck. The Telluride was well suspended and offered a smooth, comfortable ride.As a dog owner, Hughes is always transporting his Labrador Retriever in a large kennel. If the 915mm deep by 635mm wide by 711mm tall kennel wont fit in the cargo area, its a deal breaker. In the Telluride, with 1,304L of cargo capacity behind the second-row seats, it fit with room to spare. Speaking of capacities, Kia rates the Telluride as capable of towing up to 5,000lbs.Itd be great for anyone who needed the cargo space, or for a large family, Hughes says of the Telluride. It really could be construed to be the cool vehicle to drive as opposed to a minivan. He concludes, Anyone shopping in this large SUV category would be remiss if they didnt look at the Kia. I loved everything about it, its very functional and I wouldnt be

Renault updates big-selling Captur with new platform and interior
Renault has followed up its strong-selling Captur crossover with a second-generation model that features a similar dramatic interior revamp as the Clio – and will also be offered as a plug-in hybrid. The French maker claims to have sold more of the outgoing Captur last year than when it first launched in 2013. To continue that success, the new Seat Arona rival adopts an evolutionary approach to the exterior design that Renault describes as “more modern, more muscular and more expressive, with more SUV design cues”. LED head and tail-lights are also now standard across the range. Set to go on sale at the end of this year, the new crossover is significantly larger than its predecessor, with 100mm added to its length – with a 33mm longer wheelbase – and a 19mm increase in width. The result is claimed class-leading rear seat space, aided by a sliding bench that can be adjusted by up to 16cm, and a 536-litre boot that is 81 litres larger than the outgoing car. The Mk2 Captur sits on the same CMF-B platform first used for the latest Clio. It’s said to weigh “about the same” as the old car despite its increase in size and equipment levels, thanks to details such as an aluminium bonnet and plastic tailgate. The interior of the new car, like the Clio, has had a more substantial overhaul than the exterior. Renault claims it offers “a new dimension of quality and comfort rivalling models from the class above” with extensive use of higher-grade materials and newly designed seats. There’s also a new floating centre console, freeing up additional storage and space for wireless phone charging. The infotainment is a big upgrade, with an optional 9.3in central screen – larger than in the bigger Kadjar – combining with standard customisable 7in digital instruments (a 10in display is available on higher grades). A greater range of standard safety assist kit is offered, too. Renault is also going big on customisation: there’s a total of 90 exterior colour combinations and 18 interior configurations. From launch, the Captur will be offered with three turbocharged petrol engines and two diesels, all new to the car. The base 1.0-litre three-cylinder TCe unit puts out 99bhp and 118lb ft of torque, while a 1.3-litre four-cylinder makes 128bhp and 177lb ft in ‘130’ form, and 153bhp and 199lb ft in ‘155’ form. A 1.5-litre diesel comes in 94bhp and 113bhp form. Depending on the engine, five- or six-speed manual and seven-speed dual-clutch automatic gearboxes are offered. The Captur will gain a plug-in hybrid E-Tech model in the first quarter of 2020. The system, for which Renault has filed over 150 patents, blends a 1.6-litre petrol engine with a 9.8kWh battery and two electric motors, linked to a new ‘multimode’ continuously variable transmission, claimed to feel like a dual-clutch set-up. Renault says it can run for 28 miles on battery power alone at up to 83mph, while a braking system taken from the firm’s EV range allows strong brake regeneration for a ‘one pedal’ driving technique. Performance and efficiency figures have not yet been released, but engineers tell us it puts out around 150bhp and “substantially” more torque than the regular petrol

More than 13,000 Mazda3s recalled in Canada over wheels that could fall off
2019 Mazda3 SportBrian Harper Mazda is recalling 13,108 examples of its 2019-model-year Mazda3 in Canada because a manufacturing defect may increase the odds the wheels will fall off.The Japanese automaker says while the lug nuts on the wheels were tightened to the correct specification at the factory, a manufacturing error may mean a gap between the wheel hub bolt and the hub flange was left during assembly. The gap could allow the lug nuts to loosen when the vehicle is in motion, which could in turn result in the wheels falling off completely.Drivers will hear a rattling sound before the wheel completely separates from the car, Mazda suggested.Recalled vehicles will simply have their lug nuts re-torqued to the correct specifications. No incidents of wheels detaching from Mazda3s has yet been reported, nor have any accidents or injuries tied to the

Trailer for new season of ‘Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee’ released
Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee Season 11: Freshly BrewedNetflix Jerry Seinfelds car-based TV show Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee returns to Netflix this summer with an impressive list of comedians and cars, and were also assuming coffee. The show has come a long way since it first started out on Crackle; it now resides on Netflix, and has a much better budget. Were glad to see that the format, the cars and the people have remained high-quality, while the actual show production has improved steadily. While all of the guests Jerry chooses for the show are special, this particular season includes a guest that may be more famous than Seinfeld himself, Eddie Murphy. Also jumping into the passenger seat to grab a brew with Jerry are Seth Rogen, Ricky Gervais, Matthew Broderick, Jamie Foxx, Sebastian Maniscalco, Martin Short, Mario Joyner, Melissa Villaseor, Bridget Everett and Barry Marder. When we first saw the roster for the next season, we tried our best to guess what cars Jerry would have picked for his guest based on the pictures provided, and we have to say, we did pretty well. The only one that stumped us was Martin Shorts ride, which we now know to be a green-on-green Mercedes W123 Wagon. Classy, but how that ties in to Shorts personality, we shall have to wait and see.Other vehicles include a Porsche Carrera GT, Porsche 356, Volkswagen Thing, Nissan Figaro and more. The show will return to Netflix for its 11th season on July

Genesis to introduce a brace of SUVs in the next two years
If theres one thing sorely missing from the Genesis brands showrooms, its a crossover or three. In a market thirsty for tall wagons with traction at all four corners, the Genesis cupboard is more than a little bare.On todays sales call reporting on monthly earnings, we learned this oversight is about to be rectified with a pair of crossover vehicles.COO Erwin Raphael told assembled reporters that, in addition to the G80-based rig set to debut in about a years time, a compact crossover built on the excellent G70 platform will appear.Details are slim but its a safe bet the small SUV will be available with at least the 2.0-litre turbo-four found in the sedan. Plugging the hawt 3.3-litre twin-turbo six would shake up the segment in a big way. Dont expect the G70s stickshift transmission, though. As for the all-wheel-drive crossover already announced, we know it will be called the GV80 and share most of its platform details with the G80 sedan. That machine is available with a 3.8-litre V6, that 3.3-litre twin-turbo or a 5.0-litre V8, by the way. A hybrid version wouldnt be totally surprising, either.Genesis is taking the tried-and-true alphanumeric approach to naming its vehicles, appending a G to their sedans and a GV to their forthcoming crossovers. One assumes they couldnt use GX thanks to some sort of copyright claim by Lexus.South of the border, a market which drives many product decisions in this country, Genesis dealers have been crying out for more product after a production blip earlier this year. Despite having nary a crossover to offer, the brand doubled its sales last month compared to the same timeframe twelve months ago. Once these crossovers hit, expect that number to continue an upward

The Shelby Mustang GT500 will cost almost $100k in Canada
The all-new Shelby GT500–the pinnacle of any pony car ever engineered by Ford Performance–delivers on its heritage with more than 700 horsepower for the quickest street-legal acceleration and most high-performance technology to date ever offered in a Ford Mustang.Ford Ford has just released pricing for the brand-new 2020 Shelby GT500, the most powerful Mustang ever built, and it isnt cheap. The 2020 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 costs $94,675 Canadian dollars a hell of a lot more than a Dodge Challenger Hellcat, or even a Chevy Camaro ZL1. The extra cash isnt just for another 150 added to the GT350, though; you get a whole lot of features that elevate it from mere muscle car to damn-near-supercar.The big news about the GT500 has always been the engine, and rightly so, because its a doozy. The 5.2-litre supercharged-V8 is the most torque-dense V8 ever, according to Ford. Basically, that just means its squeezed more power out of a smaller package with this drivetrain, in this case 760 horsepower and 625 lb.-ft. of torque. The engine is paired to an eight-speed automatic transmission as the only gearbox available, which can knock off shifts faster than your hand anyway. If you want more added to your ridiculous car, Ford will allow you to pay for the Carbon Fibre Track Package, which adds bare carbon-fibre 20-inch wheels with Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires; an adjustable GT4 track wing; adjustable strut-top mounts; and front splitters on each side. Fordll also keep the rear seats for itself when you check that box. If youre more budget-minded, you can spec the Handling Package, which adds a Gurney flap on the rear spoiler, as well as the front splitters. The Recaro seats can also be added separately from the Carbon Fibre Track Package. Finally, if you fancy a comfier ride, you can add the Technology Package, which includes a BO sound system, six-way power-adjustable driver seat, heated mirrors, Sync 3 with navigation and cross-traffic

New Land Rover Defender to come in three body styles — and maybe a diesel
Any change to the Land Rover Defender generally sends purists into a frothing rage or, at the very least, has them tut-tutting into their afternoon tea.The forthcoming Defender, expected to launch some time within the next calendar year, is set to bring some of the biggest changes the nameplate has ever seen, starting with a new 130 model.According to a report from Automotive News, the next Defender will be offered in three models: the traditional 90 and 110 variants, plus a new 130 model. The 90 will allegedly be a three-door model with seating for up to five, while the five-door 110 will enjoy a longer wheelbase and accept five, six or seven passengers depending on spec. The big surprise is the revelation of a 130 model. This rig will apparently offer seating for eight adventure-seeking people, putting it up against other big SUVs like the Lexus LX and Lincoln Navigator. Those same rumours peg this XL-sized Defender at just over 200 inches in length, about the same as the big Lexus.A source also told the European publication that customers should expect four trims at launch: Country, Adventure, Urban and Explorer. Given this myriad of body lengths and trim options, plus the inevitable accessory catalog, Land Rover is playing a smart game of broadening the new Defenders appeal and maximizing their profits.Fun fact: JLRs total sales in America outstripped that of Europe and the U.K. by about 10,000 and 20,000 units, respectively, in the last financial year. Offering the Defender in jumbo size, then, makes a lot of sense. Another big rumour? A least one of the diesel engines on offer will make it to this side of the pond. If it shows up, itll be a tasty 300-hp straight-six scooting to 100 km/h from zero in about 7.5 seconds. The next-gen Defender will be unveiled in September at the Frankfurt auto show. The three-door 90 and five-door 110 models are expected to go on sale next year, followed by the gonzo-sized 130 about twelve months

Vancouver man arrested after refusing to get out of someone else’s Corvette
A man was arrested Sunday in Vancouvers West End after trying to claim someone elses convertible sports car as his own.The owner of an open-top convertible called Vancouver police about 6 p.m. on Sunday to say he had returned to his parked Chevrolet Corvette supercar in the Sunset Beach parking lot to find a stranger had climbed inside the vehicle through the open roof and was sitting in the drivers seat without his consent. The owner asked the man to leave but he refused, prompting the owner to call 911.Sgt. Jason Robillard said officers who arrived on scene repeatedly ordered the man to get out of the car but he continued to refuse, stating that this was now his car. When it became clear the man would not leave the car of his own will, officers used a bean bag shotgun on the mans legs, which allowed officers to move in and arrest the 36-year-old Vancouver man.Paramedics on scene treated the man for minor injuries, despite the mans refusal for treatment. Mercedes-Benz is bringing out an A250e plug-in hybrid hatchback
Mercedes-Benz is planning to add another product to its growing collection of EQ plug-in hybrids. Word is the fourth-generation A-class will get a PHEV hatchback variant dubbed the A250e. The gas-electric four-door will still run the same 1.3-litre turbocharged engine as the A200, good for 158 horsepower and 148 lb.-ft. of torque. The electric portion of the power comes from a motor mounted on the gearbox producing 101 horsepower and 221 lb.-ft. of torque. Those drivetrains in combination, says Benz, will lead to similar performance stats as the gas-powered A250. It’s expected Benz will use the same eight-speed automatic recently introduced in models like the new GLB, only tuned to handle the extra electric torque. Powering the electric motor is a 15-kWh lithium-ion battery with the capacity to deliver 60 km of pure electric driving and a top electric speed of 140 km/h. That battery sits beneath the rear seat, next to the hybrid’s fuel tank, which is 10 litres smaller than that of the standard A250. DC charging should be supported at a max rate of 22 kW, but we’ll have to wait until September for confirmation on that. The A250e is scheduled to be revealed in full at the Frankfurt auto
