Report: Mercedes could restrict 75% of AMG range in 2020

It is also possible that Mercedes could bring another manufacturer on board in order to enjoy a lower combined fleet average and avoid EU-imposed fines. Fiat Chrysler and Tesla signed a similar agreement in April, which allows FCA to count Tesla’s EV-only models as part of its fleet, thereby lowering its average CO2 output.  Mercedes is one of a number of manufacturers being forced to consider drastic line-up reshuffles to meet the quotas. Despite the recent launch of its EQC electric SUV – and the imminent arrival of the cheaper EQA – the maker cannot rely on its relatively low-volume EV sales to offset the environmental impact of its conventionally fuelled cars.  Max Warburton told the FT that if the industry sold the same mix of vehicles in 2021 as it did last year, car makers would face €25bn (£21.2bn) in

What does your car know about you? We hacked a Chevy to find out

Jim Mason, a forensic engineer with ARCCA, helped us access and download the contents of our cars infotainment computer.Geoffrey Fowler / Washington Post Behind the wheel, its nothing but you, the open road and your car quietly recording your every move.On a recent drive, a 2017 Chevrolet collected my precise location. It stored my phones ID and the people I called. It judged my acceleration and braking style, beaming back reports to its maker General Motors over an always-on Internet connection.Cars have become the most sophisticated computers many of us own, filled with hundreds of sensors. Even older models know an awful lot about you. Many copy over personal data as soon as you plug in a smartphone. But for the thousands you spend to buy a car, the data it produces doesnt belong to you. My Chevys dashboard didnt say what the car was recording. It wasnt in the owners manual. There was no way to download it.To glimpse my car data, I had to hack my way in.Spilling our Chevy Volt’s secretsJim Mason hacks into cars for a living, but usually just to better understand crashes and thefts. The Caltech-trained engineer works in Oakland, California, for a firm called ARCCA that helps reconstruct accidents. He agreed to help conduct a forensic analysis of my privacy.I chose a Chevrolet as our test subject because its maker GM has had the longest of any automaker to figure out data transparency. It began connecting cars with its OnStar service in 1996, initially to summon emergency assistance. Today, GM has more than 11 million 4G LTE data-equipped vehicles on the road. I found a volunteer, Doug, who let us peer inside his two-year-old Chevy Volt.Modern vehicles dont just have one computer. There are multiple, interconnected brains that can generate up to 25 gigabytes of data per hour from sensors all over the car. Even with Masons gear, we could only access some of these systems. This kind of hacking isnt a security risk for most of us it requires hours of physical access to a vehicle. Mason brought a laptop, special software, a box of circuit boards and dozens of sockets and screwdrivers. Buried behind the touch screen and radio controls sits our Chevrolet’s infotainment computer, a box identifiable here by a circle for its fan. Geoffrey Fowler / Washington Post We focused on the computer with the most accessible data: the infotainment system. You might think of it as the cars touch screen audio controls, yet many systems interact with it, from navigation to a synced-up smartphone. The only problem? This computer is buried beneath the dashboard. After an hour of prying and unscrewing, our Chevys interior looked like it had been lobotomized.(Dont try this at home. Seriously we had to take the car into a repair shop to get the infotainment computer reset.)It was worth the trouble when Mason showed me my data. There on a map was the precise location where Id driven to take apart the Chevy. There were my other destinations, such as the hardware store Id stopped at to buy some tape.Among the trove of data points were unique identifiers for my and Dougs phones, and a detailed log of phone calls from the previous week. There was a long list of contacts, right down to peoples address, emails and even photos.Infotainment systems can collect even more. Mason has hacked into Fords that record locations once every few minutes, even when you dont use the navigation system. Hes seen German cars with 300-gigabyte hard drives five times as much as a basic iPhone 11. The Tesla Model 3 can collect video snippets from the cars many cameras. Coming next: face data, used to personalize the vehicle and track driver attention.A privacy policy only a lawyer’s mother could loveMy volunteer car owner Doug asked GM to see the data it collected and shared. The automaker just pointed us to an obtuse privacy policy. Doug also (twice) sent GM a formal request under a 2003 California data law to ask who the company shared his information with. He got no reply.GM spokesman David Caldwell declined to offer specifics on Dougs Chevy, but said the data GM collects generally falls into three categories: vehicle location, vehicle performance and driver behavior. Much of this data is highly technical, not linkable to individuals and doesnt leave the vehicle itself, he said. The company, he said, collects real-time data to monitor vehicle performance to improve safety and to help design future products and services. But there were clues to what more GM knows on its website and app. It offers a Smart Driver score a measure of good driving based on how hard you brake and turn, and how often you drive late at night. Theyll share that with insurance companies, if you want. With paid OnStar service, I could, on demand, locate the cars exact location. The OnStar privacy policy, possibly only ever read by yours truly, grants the company rights to a broad set of personal and driving data without much detail on when and how often it might collect

Report: New car’s safety systems are making you a worse driver

Technology, such as Volvos pedestrian- and cyclist-detecting City Safety system, is no substitute for keeping your eyes open and paying attention.Volvo The safety systems in modern cars designed to make driving easier are actually placing drivers in danger, without them realizing it, according to a AAA Foundation study released Tuesday, reports USA Today.Systems such as adaptive cruise and lane-keep assist are designed to relieve the pressure of driving long distances, but according to the study, are actually making drivers more dependent on such tech, and less attentive while driving.Drivers were nearly twice as likely to engage in distracted driving with these systems activated, the AAA study found. The proof of the pudding is in the eating, er, driving, as weve seen too many videos of people using these systems and ending up in bad situations, or accidents. Its also much easier these days to be distracted by the technology not only on your phone, but in the vehicle itself. So when the safety systems are actively trying to drive for you, humans will naturally pay less attention, since they have so much else to occupy themselves with. While the findings of the study didnt suggest the safety systems themselves were dangerous, it did find drivers should be better educated about their limitations. Were definitely trying to reiterate to drivers that these systems are merely support systems and their role is to remain alert and attentive, said Bill Horrey, the studys project manager and leader of the AAA Foundations Traffic Research Group. The study analyzed a wide range of vehicles including the Tesla Model S, Acura MDX, Ford Fusion, Honda Accord, Jeep Cherokee and Hyundai

LEGO, please make this blocky Tesla Cybertruck kit a real thing

Is there a more perfect project to build out of LEGO? Teslas angular Cybertruck shocked the world when it was revealed, completely devoid of any curved lines. Now, you could build your own desk-sized Cybertruck, if this project gets enough votes. The LEGO Cybertruck design was shared on the site LEGO Ideas, where users can submit their own LEGO set concepts and have people vote on them to become official products. The Cybertruck was submitted by user BrickinNick.Concepts go through a period where they collect votes, and when they hit 10,000, theyre reviewed by the company as a potential future product. The Cybertruck project has 592 more days to reach that 10,000-vote mark, and its already surpassed more than half that. Its more than just a cool design BrickinNick has a good reason for wanting to see a LEGO Cybertruck on store shelves.Teslas mission has always been to accelerate the worlds transition to sustainable energy, BrickinNick says. This aligns with the LEGO Groups goal of sustainability and leaving a positive impact on the planet. As of yet, EVs have only been marginally represented in the LEGO set catalog. The striking yet fun design of this LEGO Cybertruck would be an amazing way to get kids and adults alike excited about EVs and all the good they can do for our environment. The project also relies on Tesla granting LEGO a license to produce the brick truck. Whether the LEGO version or the Telsa version comes out first is the real race, since theres more than a year on the clock for LEGO fans to vote on the thing. If you just cant wait for a scale Cybertruck that long, one graphic designer has already released a template for a papercraft version you can print off and fold into a model yourself. Now if youll excuse us, we have to use the office printer for unrelated

Mercedes-Benz is pushing back the Canadian launch of its first full EV

2020 Mercedes-Benz EQCHandout / Mercedes-Benz Mercedes-Benz is delaying the Canadian release of its EQC, its first full battery-electric vehicle, by more than a year as it focuses on the vehicles launch in Europe. The SUV was originally intended to enter our market in spring 2020, but according to reports from American news outlets, its now being delayed to 2021.The EQC launch in Europe and other markets earlier in 2019 generated high interest worldwide for the EQC. In a recent direction from Daimler AG, it is a strategic decision to first support the growing customer demand for the EQC in Europe, Mercedes-Benz Canada told Driving. As a result of this decision, the Canadian and U.S. market launch dates of the Mercedes-Benz EQC will be rescheduled to 2021 (originally Q1 2020).So yes, the Great White North will be the Wait White North for a little while, while Mercedes readies its first true EV for the masses. While it may very well be Europeans buy more EVs than North Americans do, causing Benzs shift in focus as it says, it could also be because it gives the company a chance to update the EQC for the North American market. As it sits now, the SUV only gets about 200 miles (320 km) of range per charge. Thats just not enough for most people, especially considering the vastness of Canada. Mercedes-Benz has promised to announce 10 all-electric models by 2022, to meet stricter European emissions regulations. By 2030, European automakers will be required to reduce their fleet emissions by 37.5

Cadillac’s 2021 Escalade will get a 38-inch-wide OLED dashboard

Everything about the Cadillac Escalade is big.The vehicle is physically huge, the wheels are large, the grille is vast, and the price will likely be massive as well.Cadilllac is now adding one more mega-feature to the luxury SUV, a humongous curved OLED screen that takes the place of the dashboard and the infotainment screen.Cadillac released a teaser video for the dashboard on Twitter mid-December.Straight lines are so last year. Introducing the first curved OLED in the industry, with over 38” diagonal of total display on the 2021 #Cadillac #Escalade. First look February 2020, available late 2020. pic.twitter.com/AoW4SvXhYA Cadillac (@Cadillac) December 16, 2019The screen spans 38 inches from the left side of the steering wheel to the midpoint of the centre console, and is curved behind the steering wheel. A plastic surround encompasses the gauge cluster, but but doesnt break up the OLED screen.Cadillac calls it an industry first, which is technically true, because Bytons electric SUV is still in the startup phase otherwise, it would take the crown with its 48-inch display. Cadillac also says the display has twice the pixel density of a 4K television, with perfect blacks and the largest color range available in the automotive industry. I guess they think were going to watch Dunkirk on this thing, but nonetheless, thats pretty damn impressive. No other details were mentioned, so were just going to have to wait until our first look of the vehicle in February of 2020. Honda’s readying new S2000 kit to celebrate the sports car’s 20th anniversary

The Tokyo Auto Salon is an annual show that showcases aftermarket parts and technology displays think of it as SEMA but with taste, and also with parts well likely never see in North America. This year (or, rather, next year) Honda will be bringing an upgraded S2000 sports car to the Salon to celebrate the models 20th anniversary, but be warned the car comes with a few tweaks to bring it into the 21st century. This particular car started life as an AP1-generation S2000, to which a new front bumper was added, along with side skirts, more prominent fenders and a rear spoiler. Only one teaser image of the upgraded vehicle has been released, but it does show off the new front fascia, which kind of makes it look like a Renault Alpine. We can see the splitter is now a little lower, and there are also side skirts to give the vehicle a lower appearance.Honda said the S2000 is also sporting a new suspension system, as well as an upgraded stereo. A set of 17-inch Advan RZ2 wheels adorn the sports car, and the windshield frame has been painted black and made thinner to give the car a more sleek appearance. The sun visors and rearview mirror also appear to have been deleted, and the outside mirror caps have been darkened, too. Could this perhaps be a speedster concept? Well have to wait until January to find out.Honda has brought a modified S2000 to the Auto Salon before in the form of the S2000 Modulo Climax, in 2013. It featured a chrome front bumper that echoed the eyebrow styling of current Hondas, as well as a custom red paint

Jeep wants to electrify its whole lineup by 2022, says report

2019 Jeep Renegade Limited 4x4Jil McIntosh Big changes are reportedly in store for everybodys favourite off-road brand, Jeep. The companys entire lineup is on track to get electrified by 2022, Jeep global president Christian Meunier revealed to Australias Car Advice at the debut of the 2020 Gladiator. This means in just a few years we can expect plug-in hybrid or battery-electric powertrains under the hoods of not just new products, but icons like the Wrangler as well. Its a lofty goal for the brand to complete in just two years, but its already got a start in the compact Hybrid Renegade.Jeeps also plans to expand its lineup into more on-road vehicles, according to reports from Auto Express, and has been confirmed to soon launch a rival to the extremely popular ultra-compact Suzuki Jimny. We want to make it more of a sustainable, iconic brand, not only an off-road brand, Meuniers said, which suggests this brand re-alignment rumour has legs. While its arguable Jeep is already an on-road brand, as probably less than half of owners actually take their vehicles out on the trails, a more road-friendly SUV would be a good move for Jeep. And a Jimny rival would do very well in North America, since Suzuki has decided not to bring the vehicle here thats a gap Jeep could potentially fill. With Jeeps new doctrine in mind, wed bet the vehicle could also be all-electric, making for the perfect little city car, especially for us Canadians that need a little more ground clearance for those particularly harsh winters.LISTEN: What do you get when you combine a cross-country electric vehicle road trip with a poignant love story? Merger confirmed for PSA and Fiat Chrysler groups

Merger confirmed for PSA and Fiat Chrysler groups The deal will create the fourth largest car maker in the world The PSA Group and FCA have agreed to merge in a deal worth £39 billion, which will create the fourth largest car manufacturing group in the world. Having been in discussions for the past six weeks, the two companies have confirmed a full merger, which will see global sales of around 8.7 million vehicles. The deal is set to be completed in the next year or so. A name for the new group is yet to be decided upon, though current PSA boss Carlos Tavares will become CEO of the group. The deal is expected to see annual cost savings of more than £3 billion due to increased purchasing power, shared development costs, and platform, technology, and powertrain sharing. The PSA Group accounts for the Peugeot, Citroen, DS Automobiles, and Opel/Vauxhall brands. These will join the Fiat Chrysler Automobiles group brands which include Fiat, Chrysler, Jeep, Alfa Romeo, Abarth, Maserati, Lancia, and Dodge. Both manufacturing groups have previously announced wide-reaching electrification plans, with the PSA Group on the cusp of a large-scale launch of electric vehicles in the UK and Europe. The Peugeot e-208, Vauxhall Corsa-e, and DS 3 Crossback E-Tense are all available to order with deliveries starting soon, and there are other pure electric models on their way. These are supported by a similarly wide-reaching set of PHEVs, including saloon, estate, and SUV models. The FCA Group has a number of plans in place, though is further away from launching electric models. A pure-electric Fiat 500 has previously been confirmed, and is expected to remain in the pipeline even with the new deal. Likewise, plants in Italy are already being converted to allow the production of electric cars, and the merger is only likely to speed up FCA’s brands in bringing EVs to market. The PSA Group is large in Europe, but has relatively limited reach elsewhere in the world. Likely to have been of great appeal to the French-based firm is FCA’s extensive reach in North American markets, while the likes of FCA’s Fiat, Lancia, and Alfa Romeo will likely benefit from shared developments from PSA.
